I want to trade my 5 series BMW for a 944 Porsche but unless I get a Turbo version, the regular version gets pretty much the same performance and mileage...

Do it! (disclaimer: I went from an 02 E39 to an 86 951)

Trying to see how many more years I can get away with a non-ODBII vehicle....

While trading in your 5 Series for a P car is not a bad idea, do realize you are going from a very reliable (for a European car) BMW to one of the less reliable examples of a more finicky and exotic brand.  Also, while buying a 924/944 is cheap, parts are still astronomically expensive, way more so than BMW parts, which are merely very expensive.  Personally, I would hold out for a pre-996 911 of some sort, since I think the 924/944 are bad examples of P car excellence.  I drive a BMW 5 series and want a 911 to replace it, so I have been over-thinking this for years.

While I don't buy into the non-aircooled, pre-996 bias, the later model 944s are pretty bombproof.

It may be a bit apples/oranges but the E39 cost way more in parts and maint. then my 951. Obviously a big difference in technology and complication (and overburdened with 'safety' design), but simply put, its far easier to work on the Porsche than it ever was on the 540. Pelican Parts is your friend, and nobody will ever be able to convince me that a well-maintained 944 is more trouble with a late model 5-series.

Apples/apples; the E28 isn't awful, aesthetically - but what's there really to compare when the 535i is a 4 door sedan topping out at 181hp?

That aside, a clean 993 Turbo is my true 'grail'

If you don't mind me asking, why do you eat vegan? I get the idea of not wanting to eat meat, but I always wondered what's with the no eggs dairy products?

i've been doing it since i was a little kid.  i guess i always just figured it was healthiest.  i realize that's probably not true, but the least healthy vegan food will never be as bad for you as the least healthy non vegan food.

This morning I started my car with the button but went back in to get my wallet. Got back in my car and drove en route to my destination. Upon arrival I realised I've not got the key fob thing in the car so can't start the car again once I've stopped.

Had to go back home, it was the darndest...

Well I have researched that quite a bit already and while that probably would be true for a 968, people on many forums praise the reliability and handling of the Porsche 944, and you can actually find examples with over 300k kilometers on the odo.

Where I live parts for either my E39 or the Porsche 944 are about the same (availability is obviously on the side of the E39), but the Porsche, being older, seems easier to work on (I try to do all the maintenance myself on my car). So I don't think it would be a bad choice.

But althought, I'm keeping this idea in mind but I've decided to wait until my girlfriend gets a car (something rather utilitary) so I can swap the BMW for something more sporty.

I was comparing like-year 5-series to Porsche in terms of doing your own work.  With few exceptions, an older anything is going to be easier to work on than a newer anything.  I have an E30 that I do my own work on, but I do nothing other than change fluids and filters on my M5.

I know the 944 if the best of the bunch in the 924/944/968 group.  With any car this age, the maintenance history and level of pampering by prior owners is way more important than anything else.  I bet there are enthusiast owned, pampered, perfect 944s out there that would be great and way better than a used-and-abused 911 of similar vintage. I want a 911 (any 911, including 996) but I get it about the 944.  The new Car & Driver says that the Cayman is a better car than the 911 now anyway...

Really, the only E39s that can be considered sporty IMO are the 540/6 or the M5, and with those exceptions, any Porsche is going to be way more engaging when driven hard.  I had possession of a 996 Turbo for about 9 months and it was utterly fantastic.  Made me do bad things.

hancholo, you're right about the state of most 944s, I should consider this a lot more than I previously thought. My E39's previous owner was an obsessed mechanic who took very well care of it. Trading this trouble-free car for a badly made choice based on sole appreciation for the feeling of an old Porsche might be a bad idea.

Yeah this thread is more better for this

X-post shit you hate

Microsoft Silverlight is some bullshit

I'm OS X based at work (video editing) and often times that won't play nicely with our Silverlight based work flow. The rest of the company has the "luxury" of using Internet Explorer (Windows based) whereas I do not, and support isn't much help because of that. Really should be HTML5 based at this point, but you know how companies and their Microsoft Enterprise products are.

Super minor nit for this thread, but still a daily annoyance

A pastor I know, who gets a more privileged vista of human suffering than I do, told me she was sick of the phrase “first-world problems†— not just because it delegitimizes the perfectly real problems of those of us lucky enough to have enough to eat and Internet access, but because it denies the same stupid trivial human worries to people who aren’t. Are you not entitled to existential angst or tedium vitae if you live in Chad — must you always nobly suffer traditional third-world problems like malaria and coups d’état? If we’re lucky, we graduate to increasingly complex and better problems, and once all our material needs are satisfied we get to confront the insoluble problem of being a person in the world.

Even if we someday solve all our societal problems, people will still be unlucky in love, lonesome and bored, lie awake worrying about the future and regretting stupid things they did and wondering whether it’s all even worth it. Utopia will have an unendurable amount of hassles to deal with, endless forms to fill out, apathetic bureaucrats, taxes, ads and bad weather. Time will still pass without mercy.
