i dont know much about architecture or architects so my choices are probably going to be really obvious... but what the hell:

the gherkin by norman foster- because it looks like a giant dildo... and hey, thats funny to me.

the emp in seattle and the guggenheim in bilbao by frank gehry- i know, i know too obvious... but that shit is just dope

and everything by gaudi in barcelona- even more obvious, but his stuff is wild.

so yeah... that's my uneducated opinion on my favorite architecture. oh, btw, this is all stuff i've seen in person. i'll probably check out some of the people and buildings you mentioned.

Hey Vinc3,

How was the Bilboa Guggenheim? I've heard mixed reports. I missed seeing it when I was in Espana, I opted to go to Cordoba instead. I still regret it to this day.

yo, like i said in my other post i don't really have a critical eye for architecture so my opinion isn't exactly the most informed. but for what it's worth i think i spent more time outside the guggenheim than inside. thing was amazing to me.

Does anyone know anything about Klein-Dytham Architects. Superfuture did thier website design. Thier architecture looks very interesting if not very interior based. Anyone been to any of their buildings, especially the Undercover store or the wedding chapel?

Anyone have any info on Wonderwall?

Here is the Klein - Dytham website I mentioned earlier.

http://klein-dytham.com/

I particularly like the Undercover Lab in Harajuku. I'm planning on making a trip to Tokyo this summer, and I will be sure to stop by and see this and the Herzog + DeMeuron PRADA store in Aoyama.

Anyone have any further suggestions on more good pieces of progressive contemporary architecture to check out in Tokyo?

Thanks

The best work from OMA is of course Casa da Musica in Oporto, Portugal

Favourite works of architecture

Couvent de La Tourette, Le Corbusier (shed a tear when first visited it)

Salk Institute, Louis Kahn (if there is a perfect work, this perhaps is the building that comes the nearest)

Library of Paris, Dominique Perrault

Velodrome and Swimming Pool in Berlin, Dominique Perrault

MUSAC, Mansilla+Tunon

Design School in Bremen (?) SANAA Kazuyo Sejima+Ryue Nishizawa

Dior Tokyo, SANAA

Braga Stadium, Portugal, Eduardo Souto Moura

Therme Vals, Peter Zumthor

Fav architects? Le Corbusier, of course... Alvar Aalto, Sejima, John Pawson, Souto Moura

Seattle Lybrary is total crap, most disgusting work from OMA... And haven't seen any building from Zaha Hadid that was actually good. I did like her till I saw any building live. Tadao Ando and Frank Gehry are always remaking the same building.

On the other hand, Sejima is rapidly becoming the greatest architect of the last years.

Sorry dude but in my opinion Dominique Perrault sucks. He was one of my teacher during my architecture studies. Library of paris is widely considered as an heavy failure.

Fav architects ? In the past, Paladio, in the present Herzog & De Meuron, in the future, Shigeru Ban, forever, Frank Lloyd Right.

Never really understood the FLWright thing... Why do people adore him so much. Perhaps it's an american thing. You didn't have much more than him. All other great architects in the USA came from the Europe in the WW2. Anyway, just think that any other great master from the modernism, specially Aalto and Le Corbusier are far far bigger the FLW.

Saarinen and Jacobsen are big too... Scharoun is f*cking brilliant!

Johnson it's another one that I can't understand, as much as I try. He's a Mies van der Rohe rip off. I'm not very fond of Mies, but I do see he was one the best, but Johnson is just an imitator. And not a very good one at it.

But none comes as high as Aalto. And Corbu.

Kazuyo Sejima's school is in Essen. Sorry for the mistake.

I think the FLWright love is actually just an american mainstream, non-architect thing. as an american architect, neither myself or any of the architects i know thinks much of Frank Lloyd Wright past the Robie House...

Philip Johnson was less a great architect as a great promoter of architecture (specifically international style modern). as you probably know, he helped curate the first gallery presentation of modern architecture in New York in the 20's which included the likes of Mies and Corb.

it took me a while to be a huge Mies fan, but if you read "The Presence of Mies" by Detlef Mertins it may help to understand why he was so great. he is the modern conceptual counterpoint to corb's modernized classicism, plus he was possibly the first to understand the nature of the tall building (way before Seagrams building even).

that said, the most amazing building i've seen in person is Corb's La Tourette. indescripable. plus if you contact the monestary you can stay overnight there.

the rest of my top 10:

2. Piazza del Campidoglio - Michelangelo, Rome

3. Notre Dame du Haut - Le Corbusier, Ronchamp

4. Seattle Public Library - OMA, Seattle

5. Salk Institute - Louis Kahn, La Jolla

6. Villa Muller - Adolf Loos, Prague

7. Santo Spirito - Filippo Brunelleschi, Florence

8. S. Carlo Alle Quattro Fontane - Frencesco Borromini, Rome

9. Kunsthal Rotterdam - OMA

10. Farnsworth House - Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Plano

that was tough. missing a lot of good stuff, but i'll stand by it...
