Red Cloud & Co. jeans

I'm on day two with the S400's now.

Yesterday I wore them while wet to get some stretching and mold the shape. I was going through a little pain around the hips and waistband because of the tightness, and when I took them off last night I had some pretty nasty dents on my skin around the hips... fun!

When I got up and put them on this morning, they somehow seem to have stretched over night. They are now super-perfect fitting, tight, but not painful. I think I've proved my stretching theory correct. The crazy thing is that if I put the measuring tape around my waist like a belt, it measures 91cm! More post soak measurements tonight.

These are fast becoming my favourite pair of jeans ever. The fit is slim straight, and with the sizing I've gone for they are painted on. I can't lift my knee much beyond 90 degrees at the moment. The denim is firm but comfortable, and not as thick and stiff as the 19oz 403's.

The denim is also a really beautiful colour, lots of white weft thread poking through. Also, I can already see a lot of elevated warp threads when I look closely, so these bad boys should be great for vertical falling in the future. I've also noticed that the dying seems to be very inconstant, and I mean that in a good way. There are almost definitely areas that are darker blue, and some that are whiter. I guess that comes down to the dying process. It looks nice and makes for a very artisan look.

Because of the tightness of the jeans I'm getting some really nice whiskers and combs setting in, which is exciting. The combs are particularly tight - I've never had jeans tight enough before to get these kinds of combs, so that's a good thing!

I've noticed that the left leg has some twist going on, but the right leg doesn't. It may be to early days to draw any conclusions from this, but I'm thinking that the blended weft may have something to do with this.

I'm really liking the accurates on the back. they are very subtle, and even quite hard to see in some lights. They are screen printed on - I wonder why he chose not to sew? Time will tell how they behave.

Here's some photos - fit pics later.

r403s wont restock...

Devastating...especially since I just missed out on the last pair by just a couple of hours ha ha. Looking at gregornz's comparison pics I'm glad I didn't settle for the other models, I really liked how that taper on the 403s looked. Ah well, I guess I'll have to wait for them to make another tapered model.

Wow, that is brazen of them to blatantly copy the Levi's arcuates. I guess it's just a matter of time before they get a letter from Levis.

Ha ha, welcome to China!

I actually like the S400 cut better I think, although the S400's are a better size for me, so maybe that's why. As soon as I can find some friends, I'll take a fit pic and post it and then you can compare. The S400 is very slim fit, and no less tapered that the 403, I think.

just received the first pair from the shipment for one of the members on this board, a pair of R400 in a size 30. i have to say i am very very impressed by these jeans and will definitely be picking up a pair myself. for real. the measurement chart is pretty accurate, only the waist is off by 2cm. the rest of the measurements are within 0.5cm difference from the actual measurements (measured BiG).

what impresses me the most is not just the quality of the denim but the construction as well. at first i was skeptical about a pair of 200SGD jeans from china, thinking that they are just another pair of unbranded or something. no offence to unbranded lovers. but the construction is ace. what i like about these:

1 ) solid chunky chainstitched hems

2 ) beautiful selvage lining, not too thick or thin

3 ) nice hints of lemon yellow threads all around

4 ) good quality rivets and buttons. universal rivets. the buttons remind me of those on my burgus plus jeans.

5 ) very nice hidden rayon tab hidden in right backpocket

5 ) chainstitched waistband

6 ) chainstitched inseams

7 ) overlocked fly

8 ) raised belt loops (really wasnt expecting this)

9 ) hidden coin pocket selvage

10 ) high quality goatskin patch similar to that on a pair of eternal 811

measurements for a size 30 R400

waist: 41cm

inseam: 88.5cm

front rise: 27cm

back rise: 34.5cm

thigh: 28.5cm

knee: 21.5cm

hem: 20.5cm

all in all i have to say that they are a fantastic pair of jeans for the price and they are every bit as good as any japanese denim that you can pick up! ace!

That's a pretty heavy endorsement rat! Now wait till you try the fit! :)

When you say the measurements are off by 2cm, on the big side or small?

My recommendation from having two pair now is - size down one to get good fit.

What is a 'raised belt loop'?

Rat, you've owned Japanese jeans, what would you say about the denim on the redclouds in comparison?

when i checked the measurements, the waist was smaller in actualy life by 2cm. hope it wont make such a huge difference to the owner of that pair. otherwise, all other measurements are actually very accurate.

will sizing true to size be too loose in the waist? because i hate wearing really tight jeans that constrict around my waist and prefer something that is just about right. in your experience, do they shrink a lot after a wash? feeling this denim to the touch, i dont think they will shrink a lot in a wash. the weave is pretty tightly loomed.

a raised belt loop is one that has a bump in the middle. if you look at your other normal pants and your pair of cloud jeans, you can feel the belt loop and there is a distinctly raised middle. this is one of the techniques that were used a long long long time ago to reduce friction and abrasion on the stitching. also, if you realise after some time these raised areas will fade more than other parts because of the abrasion.

with regards to the denim, in all honesty i have not held much 19OZ japanese denim before other than a pair of samurai's. but the denim on these are still slubby as well and only slightly less slubby than those on sams. also, the way the denim is loomed is more haphazard than those on other japanese denim that i have. if i look at the weft my other jeans, i can see that the yarns are alternating between white and indigo very clearly. but this is less regular than those. having said that, the denim on these are still very nice and if i dare to say, they should be priced a bit higher than what they are because the quality is very similar to japanese made denim. hope this answers your question..

some pictures i took of the denim. notice the selvage at the coin pocket peeking out, the weft of the denim i was talking about, the lemon yellow contrast stitching, the beefy chainstitch, the anodized buttons and the rivets, the hidden rayon tag hidden inside the right backpocket and the very soft goatskin leather patch.
