i was a good kid last night and i feel pretty awesome about it today

 

 

 

 

 

edit: fwiw i'm fresh off a 10 day binge (close friend's wedding / bachelor road trip), so the break is much needed at this point. i should probably quit for good, because there is very little value in drinking. but the social aspect calls for moderation at least i'm thinking.

my body craves for alcohol not like i do it to have a bitchin time... most times i drink alone...

Although i am as moved as anyone by inspirational pamphlets urging one to follow one's dreams and give up all things that are not directly emotionally rewarding, like the comic above, i ultimately feel they paint a picture that is onedimensional and misleading. The driving force behind these motivational stories is ever the same: only pursue what makes you happy, even in the face of adversity and resistance, because i did, and it worked for me. There are two inherent flaws present here: the first being that because it worked for me, it should work for you. By that logic, i should be telling people to quit high school because traditional education did not agree with me and i ended up with a career anyway. Guess what? For every person who achieves a measure of success despite (note: despite, not thanks to) quitting high school, there are hundreds who by doing so irrevocably turn the odds against themselves. Hardly sound advice. 

 

The second flaw is the idea that the tedious, the banal, are portrayed as a distraction from your true goals. Rather, these are often enablers of these same true goals. Not being hounded by a dim-witted boss sounds like a dream, until as a freelancer you realize that without a monthly salary to depend on now every client is your boss, and for fear of losing income you'll submit to their every whim. A romantic, hardscrabble existance as a headstrong and sovereign artisan, who dictates his own terms no matter the financial consequences, sounds amazing. Until you realize that maybe the pursuit of your dream alienates you from your spouse, who now unfairly bears the brunt of financial responsibility. The advocates of these all-or-nothing philosophies are the lucky ones. They are the exceptionally talented ones who did make it on their own terms, who were unconditionally supported by their loved ones to and beyond the bounds of reason, who had the good fortune of being spared the tough choices between self-fulfillment and the harsh realities imposed on us by fate. 

 

Theirs are beautiful stories, but they are beautiful because they are rare and elusive in their good outcome against all odds. More often than not, their authors underestimate the influence of chance in the proceeding of facts, and overestimate their own. This very fallacy leads them to advise a course of action which they themselves can only judge by it's outcome rather than it's actual mechanics. 

 

Now, i'm not attempting to make a case against following your dreams. Rather, my case is that dreams are a precious and fragile thing and are best pursued with caution. Much like a newly minted millionnaire who made his fortunes in the casino might not be the best financial advisor, someone who told his boss to shove it and ended up on top anyway might not give the best career advice.

Sitting in a Taco Bell in Weed, Ca waiting for a burrito, redneck dad with cutoff tee wearing NASCAR sunglasses is telling his wife (I assume) how he's gonna punch her face in when they get home. She's easily double his size, so I think she can handle herself...but also not about to say anything because by the way she's replying I get the feeling she's into it in some weird sexual fetish way. And their 8 year old daughter is sitting with them. People are fucking weird.

It's pretty upsetting the double-standard we live in, but all girls I have talked with about this subject have no problem with their husband making less than them or being a stay-at-home dad on paper, but it never works out in reality. As soon as a girl starts making more than her husband or he acts as a stay-at-home, they feel like the man doesn't stack up. It's unfortunately the reality for a large portion of these couples will become broken after a wife thinks her husband is inadequate because of his lower salary. That's not to say it doesn't work, but there are a lot of ingrained cultural values and self-worth women derive from their significant other's income level.

I feel like most of my recent posts have been pretty anti-women recently, but I think its just the intense amount of feminists living in SF that have jaded my perception on women. I still love women and know there are some gems out there and some not so great ones, just as there are men. I found this article very refreshing:
