Confused by 5.0 layout I feel slow.

you can "mark forum as read" and then next to each thread in a subforum there is a text bubble with "new" in it when there are new posts

The little rep/post bar thing is confusing the shit out of me. There are some people with 2,000 posts and 2 or 3 squares, yet mass has ~11,000 posts and like a gazillion squares. Is there any logic to it... that's what I'm trying to understand?
