It's actually from that little Alden coin purse that is shown in my last picture.

I found a great supplier for old half soles and heels this week and I took a trip over to their store today. The store itself was quite interesting, with wall to wall shelves filled with leather and shoe repair supplies and I actually had to set up an appointment to see them. But no pics, because I didn't think to bring a camera.

They had just what I was hoping to find, and I bought a big chunk of their old stock for the boots I have and the boots I might have in the future.

The haul:

I have never seen this style with the arched back in person before, but I am told they are the hardest to find and the oldest style.

I may have depleted his supply of the half and full soles, but he thought maybe they had more left in the back. But he did have a lot of heels left if anyone needs a proxy.

I was looking for these because I recently found something amazing on the bay that need rubber soles if I ever plan to wear them. Update will come when they arrive.

Okay I acknowledge that this isn't the "right" thread for this question but screw it I'm gonna ask it here anyway: why are cat's paw soles so sought-after?

I've asked my shoe guy for Cat's Paws and he sorta mocks them. He says they were always the cheapest rubber soles people used (know he's a blowhard, so I take everything he says with a grain of salt). I think their popularity is basically an aesthetic. They look cool. One can spot a Cat's Paw heel over say a Biltrite or Danite or a modern Vibram. Speaking of quality, though, I don't think they are necessarily superior. Also, they are no longer produced. So, it's a bit like finding vintage redlines.

^ Nice haul!

The aesthetics :D

This leads me to believe you can still get Cat's Paw heels - http://www.american-biltrite.com/footwear-components - look under "Whole Heels"

Yep, in boxes of 36 - will cost around $3 to $4 per pair of heels.

What your shoe guy said has some truth in it though - Cat's Paw are really simple, no-frills SBR rubber. It's in no way comparable to modern day Dainite, Corinium or performance Vibrams...

Regardless, great find Ray. I'll throw some on my engineer boots when I get around to it. I'm just as much a hype beast as the next bro (as a point of clarification, since I stopped "manual" labor I don't really wear my engineer boots anymore so I probably won't get around to it).

After spending a few days at the cabin on the lake, my Roys, family, and I headed back to my home town of Mystic, CT, where we spent a few days. It was great to hit the old haunts- the coffee shop down the alley where I used to work, the record shop next door, the local library where I used to study in high school...

(they had the most beautiful wrought iron railed balcony around the second floor, but it looks like it disappeared to make more room for books :( )

Mystic had a wooden turning bridge over the river that burned up, so they replaced it with a great iron bascule (counterweighted) drawbridge in 1920. We got caught by it, which gave me just enough time to jump out of the car, grab a coffee, and get back before traffic started moving again.

I always feel compelled to stop by the old cemeteries. I truly miss the history of New England.

Some day, I'll have a mausoleum like this.

OK, enough boring stuff, says Em. Time to hit the Mystic Aquarium, where my older brother works. The sea lions are always popular. Apparently, the Aquarium helps the Navy train them for underwater recovery missions.

P1060414.jpg

We could have spent hours watching them underwater. Definitely some of the most playful animals, I'd say.

P1060423.jpg

The jellyfish were also mesmerizing.

Can't believe I forgot my harpoon.

We took some time to hold some starfish...

P1060424.jpg

...and pet some sharks.

P1060430.jpg

We wound up down the road in historic Stonington Borough. It's those quiet New England streets I also miss.

Another beautiful old library...

P1060432.jpg

Our car broke down, so we had to catch an old New England teeter totter home.

That is an amazing cabin, and you're making me homesick! I used to live just a half hour or so away from that area. What lake is that?

Edit: Oh, the Roys look good too.

Thanks! It was on Lake Wallenpaupak(sp?), which was so quiet in the off season.

great pics zissou, funny i had two vacations in arow, the last years at pokono Pa. great place.

That is funny. I don't really think of it as much of a destination, although there are an awful lot of cabins ringing the lake.

Truly. Cat's Paws soles wear away like butter.

The cat is cute, though.

Around here they throw the books in the dump and replace them with a computer so transients have a place to look at porn.

When I was a kid we got to do the New England thing every couple of years. The old graveyards were always my favorite. I really dug the Mystic seaport as well.
