Would that be ms. Pollard? I've been wanting to pick this up- I'm a huge Gibson fan, but it seems every successive book packs a bit less punch than the last. If no one is being devoured by nanobots and chased be space-faring rastafarians while hanging from their fingers from a out-jutting hobo encampment plastered to the side of the Bay Bridge, I'm not really there.

Pattern recognition did have one of my favorite quotes of all time, where Pollard is describing the Tommy Hillfiger brand as a ""simulacra of simulacra of simulacra. A dilute tincture of Ralph Lauren, who had himself diluted the glory days of Brooks Brothers, who themselves had stepped on the product of Jermyn Street and Savile Row ... There must be some Tommy Hilfiger event horizon, beyond which it is impossible to be more derivative, more removed from the source, more devoid of soul."

Maybe RRL has gone beyond the TH event horizon? While I like some of their pieces, they all have a curiously flat, pupil-repelling quality, as if they don't entirely exist on this plane.

Sounds like baudrillard if he was a fashion whore, but in general anytime I look through a lightning magazine I have him screaming at me in the back of my mind.

The only Gibson I've read is the Pattern Recognition trilogy, and they do get progressively weaker, but I'm impressed by Gibson's ability to craft a sense of place. It's our world, but just off enough to be utterly strange. He packs it with little details that draw the world without obliterating the reader's imagination (ala most sci-fi and fantasy) or climbing up his own ass with in-jokes and impenetrable references (ala Foucault's Pendulum).

Tonight myself, my wife, and my Roy's popped off to see a little act you may have heard of Fleet Foxes.

Words other than 'holy shit' or 'best show ever' don't do it any justice. A 2 hour set and a 5 song encore... all I can say is, when a chance to see them is presented GO. GO, best live band I've seen in quite some time.

I am rather sleepy, but I'll do my best to upload some pictures from our trip and the show tommorow.

^ Nice :cough: tiger stripe :D

Well, back from the ""Tour"!

Had an awesome weekend! The RxC played a very minor role in driving there/back, and chilling in the evenings.

No great photography here - just brought my point-and-shoot...

A small sampling of the supplies I brought along

Great views

About 50 of us did the ride. This wasn't a sanctioned event - a few of us hardcore nuts found this year's schedule to be lacking in excitement, so we organized a private race - 200 miles with about 22000ft elevation gain! :D

Most of the guys left either Saturday night after the race, or early Sunday. But about 15 of us stayed and did an easy 100k Sunday morning. That's when a buddy snapped this pic of me.

6160860785_acc510b24a_z.jpg

I'm standing in front of Bopple hill, which was the final hill of our race. Bopple hill has just under 700ft of climbing in about 3/4 of a mile. Its steepest section is 23% grade…

I can honestly say that I'm looking forward to a couple of weeks out of the saddle before cross season starts!

Just to keep things on topic - the last shots of my RxC, before they go into the wash this week. They're kinda dingy & dirty, it's time..

I had a trip out West today - out to Bath, one of Britain's oldest towns, founded by the Romans aropund a spa.

I was working at this place..

Bathspa.jpg

Bathspa2.jpg

It's an old stately home, now leased by Bath Univiersity; I was there to lecture MSc students on the Blues form in music, how it evolved, and how it fed into popular music. It was a great job to do, no new research, and it's great to do older stuff in a new context to people who aren't jaded. But of course there was around two days' preparation for a 90 minute lecture. The good news is it looks like I'll be going back to deliver the same work to a different audience. Which adds jam on top.

Right after answering the last question I had to run out and get the train home. Things are getting a big hectic here.

Cone bag with all my shit in...

trainhome2.jpg

Roys waiting on the platform. Could be a blues song, eh?

jeans.jpg

The UK landscape is getting more and more like that of America's mid West - a decade ago most of these factories were thriving. Now more and more are empty, while cheaply-built apartments sprout around them.

trainhome.jpg

A quick taster from the lecture: this is Skip James, who playeda strange, beautiful Blues in the 20s and 30s that is arguably one of the most African in form. He was rediscovered in the 60s. When promoters put these guys on the stage in the 60s, they'd often ask them to wear downhome workwear, bib overalls etc. Of course, this was unthinkable. They were showmen, they would dress up, not dress down for a performance. (

Sorry about the commentary added at the end).

Now, for various reasons, I'm behind on other stuff I need to do. So I'm trashing my SuFu password for a couple weeks, to avoid the temptation of telling people what size 1947 LVC to get, or whether their jeans are Thai fakes. Have fun, and i look forward to checking all your updates in October...

seconded,Maynard.thats happens to me all the time when accidentally mixing my downers.but where did you get "Blues",Paul? IIRC they stopped making those pills in the seventies.

anyway, got an emergency call at work today.i made a steely skeleton of a horse two weeks ago, following strictly the technichal drawings.half finished with it,the sculptors realized that they are going to equip a hot-blooded stallion with the forlegs of an Island pony:

6163243397_e9b7151e51_z.jpg

6163781404_68ee389e58_z.jpg

time to get the specialist literature out and study the physical proportions of a horse.this should have been done weeks before i started on this project, but who am i,critizising others?

6163783038_6bf4cccae9_z.jpg

this is a premiere.ive never amputated a headless horse before in my life

6163252545_609cae5bbf_z.jpg

somehow,i even enjoyed it.but only a tiny bit,really.

6163254055_27c6df32b8_z.jpg

just imagine this would be a living horse

6163257645_8015678963_z.jpg

the difference is,you cannot weld new legs to it.

easy Whitey,easy.its nearly done.

as promised, some more (shitty) pictures from Lauren and I's trip to Tulsa to see friends and Fleet Foxes in concert.

6163363915_879a71849f.jpg

got the car all packed up after work

6163366281_fb8b98450e.jpg

full tank of gas, ready to hit the road!

6163372143_646e79b1e2.jpg

US-183. Pretty boring stretch of road. After 150 miles you need to get out and break up the trip a little.

6163900600_369ee3d349.jpg

6163383423_c46acb66bc.jpg

Fortunately enough there is a Goodwill right off the highway just before the junction of US-183 and Interstate 70.

6163902356_26b76d770e.jpg

Nothing spectacular in the jeans/pants section. But I thought it was pretty cool how they have the jeans hung. It makes it so much easier to browse with them this way.

6163374109_8cc81ea16c.jpg

Some decent Tony Lama's, but alas they were all too big or cowgirl boots.

a8731042db67491b8e7687bf47078448_7.jpg

Managed to find this deadstock 'Big Smith' brand jacket probably from the mid to late 60's if I had to guess. (more pics in the vintage denim thread)

6163963176_1eea6dee14.jpg

more driving

6163379325_49565e6181.jpg

Finally about 9 hours later, after numerous pit stops, gas ups, and every single podcast on my ipod we made it to Tulsa.

Saturday Night was the big concert. Wanted to get some pictures of the venue from the outside but it was raining before and after the show. We saw Fleet Foxes at Cain's Ballroom in Downtown Tulsa.

It's a really cool venue, tons of great country and western acts played there in the 40s and 50's. When my grandmother was pregnant with my mom she and my grandpa parked cars outside and then would go inside and dance . It's known as the home of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. Tons of great country history there.6163917792_87198f491b.jpg

Around the inside of the Dance Hall are all these HUGE publicity photos of famous Country artists. Many of which are signed and framed. I snapped this one of Hank while we were walking in.We came in during the Walkmen's encore so I wasn't able to get many decent pictures since we were scrambling to get towards the stage. I'd heard a legend that Sid Vicious punched a hole in the wall back during their US tour. You could see it pretty clearly, but wasn't able to get a picture of it unfortunately.

6163388777_38684244c3.jpg I didn't take many pictures once the show started. I was surrounded by all these kids more or less enjoying the show through the screen of their phones. (smh)

Fleet Foxes put on a hell of a show. Their initial set was almost 2 hours, and then once they finally got the crowd calmed down they played a 5 song encore too.

Met up with some friends for Coffee and sat around at Village Inn until around 2.

Woke up, had some brunch and it was back on the road.

Kansas apparently has good taste in music, a whole by-way dedicated to Post Rock lol.

Plainville,KS.

58e9bc6f1d814d2b820b3d925f1f8ac1_7.jpg

We do get some decent sunsets out here.

Despite the driving, it was a hell of a trip.

(excuse the shitty iphone quality pictures)

almostnice, I hope your neighbours didn't mind the noise too much and didn't have to shout themselves hoarse to be heard.

not sure if my language skills translates this right, but the flaying house where this horse butchering took place,is far away from my home.the noise of my dynamic kids is far worse and the neighbours didnt complain at all, which will be always a miracle to me.if i were them,i would call the parental care authority at least twice a day.

Dude, this brings back some memories. I lived in Colorado until I was 8 years old and I remember eating breakfast at the village inn. Those don't exist out here in california.
