ROY X CONE contest, 1.1.11 - 2.1.12

Hi guys. Ranon kindly reminded me that I haven't posted an update in a good while. I'm still in the mountains of North Carolina for 6 more days, but I've been snapping pictures and doing my best to document my trip. Jeans have been worn 20+ hours a day I would guess. I end up sleeping in them more often than not.

Hope that everyone is well. It's crazy that it's already August.

Afternoon all. As ever apologies for not posting anything like enough. However here are some pics of my Roys. They absolutely reek. Not that we've been having an amazing summer but it's been hot enough..... I really wanted to go the whole year without a proper wash but six months will have to do. So far they've only had the initial soak. So here are some shots pre wash:

Glad to hear you are doing well almostnice.

...

My wife and I are still busy unpacking and settling in, but here are a few pictures of the new house my jeans and I are moving into. I will try to post more pictures as we get settled.

228969_10150254594021835_508016834_8005568_1288998_n.jpg

We're right on main street, here is a shot from our front yard.

281905_10150254593856835_508016834_8005564_1905371_n.jpg

We have a really long drive way, and a garage which I am really excited about.

285477_10150254594116835_508016834_8005571_2692858_n.jpg

Our backyard, there is a garden there you can sort of see. Our landlord is awesome, he and his wife planted cucumbers and tomatoes for us as well as some frowers (we need to get busy tending to them once we're settled)

282021_10150254594256835_508016834_8005573_3718189_n.jpg

In addition to the plants he's doing a ton of remodeling. He ripped up the horrible carpet and is putting down 2 inch oak flooring in our living room.

223967_10150254594416835_508016834_8005575_6023081_n.jpg

He also completely renovated the bathroom. In addition to a new shower, tile, toilet, and tub, he also put in this nice new sink and vanity.

This is my wife busy in the kitchen, you can see some cucumbers we yanked from the garden. I think she's gonna put them in a salad for our dinner :)

198778_10150254594731835_508016834_8005580_5254971_n.jpg

This is our dining/sun room. The blinds don't really go anymore, but they aren't permanent which is nice.

284841_10150254594856835_508016834_8005582_7331872_n.jpg

The rest of the basement is too messy for pictures right now, but this is my favorite part of maybe the entire house. Mounted to the wall is this deer antler.

The new house looks great, robbie! It seems like it will be a lot of room, yes?

Thanks for the great history update, entertainment. I really miss New England.

I'm glad your back is on the mend, markus. I'll agree that back problems are the worst.

Well, my class ended last Friday, which was a little sad, but also a big relief. There were folks in the class who had been through every class I'd ever taught!

I had been teaching them how to ID our native conifer trees each day, so I had a 'cone-test' (get it?) to see what they learned. They passed!

8919e881.jpg

Then we did a fun little activity where we pair up, and the partner leads a blindfolded person out to a tree in the forest and lets them feel it. Then, we bring them back to the start, remove the blindfold, and see if they can find it. Amazingly, everyone found their tree.

5449975c.jpg

We also spent some time each day working on nature journals, which we shared on the last day.

1192c3bb.jpg

Even though class had finished, I agreed to take some folks on a wildflower hike the next day. It was pretty much peak wildflower season up in the mountains! Lots of purple Wasatch Penstemon.

7aa1d53d.jpg

And columbine, Indian paintbrush, etc.

3a7de4df.jpg

A steadfast daisy growing out of the rock.

74dfb89a.jpg

Here's my EDC for a day in the mountains. The only thing missing is my Motorola two-way radio with compass, altimeter, and weather radio.

3365fdaf.jpg

Now that class is done, I just need to wrap up and then I am off work for a week or two. My daughter's school year starts in a few weeks, so I want to take her somewhere fun for a week. I'm leaning toward Great Basin National Park out in Nevada. I've heard it's stunning...

Envious of your trip zissou. I need to get out and enjoy some of our local nature before it gets too cold.

And you're right it is a huge house. Our landlord told us that he remembers the previous owners renting out the basement. I will have to take some more pictures eventually, but it is like another house down there complete with a kitchen, bathroom, and 2 (sort of) bedroom type areas.

It will be nice though, my wife does a lot of handicrafts and in general we have a lot of crap.

Thanks, robbie and beats.

I missed your earlier comment, Stefan. I'm sorry to hear things aren't going that well at the moment. Marriage is a tempestuous endeavour (for good and sometimes bad reasons), and I wish you the best, sir.

just curious, anybody has any plans about what they will be wearing after this is over? or are you guys gonna continue with these till they fall apart?

I meant to answer this earlier, but must have forgotten. I am hoping to find some decent LHT jeans of some kind to work on. We'll see if the thrift store gods are feeling generous come January. I'd love to find something vintage to break in.

Hey team! Hope all is well up in here. Sending warm thoughts to dr.house and almostnice.

Going on three weeks into the India travels, and it's been pretty rad so far: Mumbai, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Udaipur, Agra, Mathura and Manali. While I'm at an internet cafe backup up photos, thought I'd share a quick few!

In the Thar Desert, about 45km from the border of Pakistan (which explained the two passes I saw done by a couple of fighter jets - quite incongruous with the desert peace)

img4060fj.jpg

Mehranghar fort, Jodhpur. Mad style (unfortunately not me...)

IMG_3865.JPG

Damn, forgetting the name of this fort... but it's a big 'un near Udaipur:

img4384o.jpg

img4396r.jpg

No introduction needed for this one, methinks

img4442z.jpg

That's all for now (smallest ever dkatz photo-update?)

Not nearly as cool as the Taj Mahal but...

Our new house has several flower beds/garden areas. We just moved in and MAN! did they need tended to. We started at around 10 and worked right up til 1 o' clock. Fortunately for us the weeds were pretty easy to pull since we got some rain last night.

I forgot to take any 'before' pictures, but here are some after we finished.

And here are some shots from the actual garden.

Can't wait for these to ripen. I love home grown tomatoes!

One of the 9000 cucumbers we've pulled off of this plant. I think we're going to have to learn how to can. I see pickles in our future.

From Middlebury, we headed toward the area in northeastern Vermont known as the Northeast Kingdom, right on the border with Canada.

Along the way, we stopped in Richmond, which has a round church:

2011-07-31070.jpg

And a good bakery called On the Rise with a clientele that looks like they are big fans of Phish (which formed at the University of Vermont):

2011-07-31071.jpg

In the Northeast Kingdom, we stayed at an inn in the buttery of an old dairy farm founded in the late nineteenth century. If you look closely, you can see that the weather vane is in the form of a butter churn, although the churning was actually done by a steam engine which still exists (though it is non functioning).

2011-07-31111.jpg

This was the owner's house, but it is not open to the public.

2011-07-31133.jpg

Once the farm extended over 7000 acres. It no longer functions as a dairy, but now serves as an animal sanctuary for farm animals no longer wanted by their owners.

There is a huge horse barn

2011-07-31105.jpg

2011-07-31109.jpg

And a huge cattle barn.

2011-07-31107.jpg

As well as many outbuildings.

Great posts Robbie, Zissou, dkatz, mikecch, entertainment! et al.

So proud to be part of this contest, this thread continues to blow me away.

Busy sorting out my forthcoming house move ( and so glad to get out of this scabby flat, hopefully leaving alot of negative vibes behind) but thought I'd post a couple of pix from our weeks holiday in south Devon before my broadband goes down this weekend.

Been away for a few days & look at all this action! :)

Great stuff Robbie, Zissou, dkatz, mikecch, entertainment, Dr Heech and all! Almostnice - speedy recovery to you - beer helps, I've been told ;)

I was in Banff for the last 4 days, attending a meeting. Can't lie - I was mostly in a suit, or in golf attire, except for a few late afternoons when I got to hike around in the RxC. Still, I thought you guys might enjoy the views, even if I only had my point & shoot with me....

Tough life when your first sights of the day are like this

On the courses here at home, we have Canada geese running the place. In Banff, it's prairie dogs :P

Walking around the hotel grounds, amazing to see deer around. They are so used to people admiring them that they have no fear at all
