I'm sure you're right about gentrification in the BX, and you're also right that it sucks, but it is sort of inevitable. But it's not going to happen this year, or even next year.

Basically, although there are plenty of beautiful, spacious apartments in post-war buildings and cheap rents, I wouldn't recommend to England that he move there. For two reasons: because for what he wants to spend he can do better in terms of location, and because people there are (obviously) wary of people like him moving in, and he may not be welcomed with open arms.

and don't forget that he is moving in with his wife and safety is a real issue. while he may feel comfortable in a less safe area, his wife may not. this is a real issue, as anyone who has moved in with a significant other will tell you. you can't compromise comfort when it comes to where you live.

oh yeah of course, i agree with you on that point. for England's budget and concerns, the Bronx is definitely not the place for him and his wife: most neighborhoods are still predominately native NYers, and he'd have to spend a little more money to move into one of the nicer, more outsider-friendly neighborhoods.

i think he might do well to highly consider Astoria, all things considered.

well i guess places like astoria/williamsburg etc are "outside" friendly if that's the new way to describe people who aren't the poor native new yorkers getting pushed out

i think i'm pretty much the only bitter native new yorker using that term, but maybe it will catch on? where are you from, C0C0?

I'm surprised mizanation hasn't weighed in on this at all. I guess he's really a Seattle guy at heart.

I live in Sunnyside, and I've got to say, look to Queens for cheaper, safer lodgings. It might not have the same cache as "Manhattan" or "Brooklyn" (maybe even "The Bronx"), but if that's something that you don't care about, then head on over. It might mean transferring trains, but getting into Manhattan from the 7 has never been a problem for me.

To the OP, consider neighborhoods like Kensington and Midwood in Brooklyn. Kensington is spotty, but some areas of it are fine. Midwood is safe and is still a 7.5min train ride to Park Slope and a 15min ride to Carrol Gardens. And, you can have a car. I would also try my luck with Prospect Height and Windsor Terrace - both border Park Slope and are a bit cheaper (not by much, but still).

I don't think in my 31 years on this planet I had ever thrown away cupcakes. Until I went to Magnolia Bakery.

Really?! Well damn, I loved 'em. Seems like it is a rather touristy spot though, as there were a ton of people flooding that place. There are a bunch of other cupcakerys in NY though.

Cupcakes are the new W+H.

Overpriced garbage littered with rich dbag kids, in a nutshell.

Maybe so but still the only place in NYC that sold a LOT of stuff eg: Nudie RRVS, they have some evisus now in a veggie wash that are GORGEOUS, they get a lot of unique pieces that nobody else has and are worth the visit for that alone. They also are BIG on the raw denim (only place I've seen other than BiG that stocked sugarcanes, altho it's been a while since I've seen any there).

They also have BY FAR the best sales outside barneys. Twice a year like 40% of the stock goes on sale and you can get a lot of deals.

Magnolia doesn't deliver on that promise that the huge-ass line seems to give. The cupcakes are fresh, though, and the line moves fast. I'm a big fan of Two Little Red Hens' Brooklyn Blackout.
