  1. @Alec Leamas I still have a hard time dropping off my son but more than a year in I am sure it has been the best thing for him. His socialization skills have wildly improved, his imagination has grown in ways it wouldn't have at home, and most of all, he's been able to learn from more people that are not his two parents and while we do our best and contain multitudes, we cannot show him everything.

It gets easier, but it never gets easy. Everyone is different, but in general I think it's quite good for the kids and harder for the parents.

  2. I kinda like 'em. I almost never use 2 back pockets at the same time. For me, that is no way to live life and means I need a shoulder bag.

I like the jacket better, but it's too close to my FW '22...

My stable has already grown too big, but I can't rule them out totally. Curious to know more about the actual denim I think...

  3. In a quick attempt to be more useful attached are OA 01’s in a size 31. You can see the waist had to stretch as evidenced by the fly buckling outwards. I don’t mind this. It did stretch no problem. They are very comfortable. The cut is full enough that the waist was really the only point of concern. Now, a belt helps a bit but I don’t tend to wear one.

I got the 03s in a 32 but have not washed them yet. I expect them to be a little loose throughout and the waist to feel about the same it will just need to stretch less.
I can comfortably wear a 29 or a 30 from WH, FC, and sugar cane/mf. With those it comes down to the cut, not the waist. My WH 1003xx are a 29 but that is their fuller cut, for example. For slimmer cuts a 30 is usually better just for seat/thigh room - not the waist per se.

  4. A few places I've ordered from have done that by default, but I've never had an order over 800...or really even that close I think. But to be honest I don't think I could ask that of a seller. If I were a seller and a buyer asked it of me I wouldn't love it. Different strokes, I guess.

  5. 3 hours ago, Geeman said:

Agreed,  the initial marketing put a lot of us denim snobs  experts off.  I've had 2 or 3 pairs in the past, I prefer a slimmer fit but the fabrics were a bit to much for me.. I think the level of slub just made the fades weird.

The 14oz fabric was crap, paper thin. 16 oz was better and 20 oz secret is OK... until it fades.

Their over dyed black (Azumi?)  was quite nice.

PBJ are well ahead for fabric.

I may have been a snob, but Oni was one of the first raw denim brands I was familiar with, so I was definitely no expert. Doesn’t take any familiarity to see that marketing was just goofy.

  6. I recently finished Septology. It’s about 700 pgs and one of my favorite things I’ve ever read.

Learning how to live well with downtime is a rare enough skill that doing just that seems like the ticket.

Last idea is if you’ve got any space where you live, rip up (part of?) your lawn and plant native plants or pollinators. That’s an easy enough and rewarding hobby for sure.

  7. The mysterious old denim master marketing schtick I found quite ridiculous. That was enough to turn me off completely. But coupled with cuts that had no appeal to me (at least when I looked a few years ago), and the nature of the denim itself all made it clear it was for someone else. I had a pair of PBJ once and that was too much for my tastes.

I’m sure it’s nice stuff but I just wouldn’t prefer it.

  8. Kirk in Gunpowder. I wore these for these probably 3-4 months straight about 2 years ago, they got dirty and I tried to spot clean some areas which just really took off the dye in a noticeable way. After that I said screw it and just wore and washed like any other clothes and they were my main jeans for a few months when I was learning ceramics. Rolled with the marbling and everything. They’re beater jeans now but I actually like them more than ever at the moment.

These were really slow to shrink - to the point that I was not actually believing they were unsanforized (still not sure) - but they did end up shrinking about 2” in the inseam and definitely a bit all over after all.

  9. @chicotei saw both of those ha. Alas I think I’m gonna go for a 2 and that dark emperor one is just a little too much. There are some on grailed but for the prices ppl want it seems I can almost get a new one.
Time to keep an eye out w intention.

  10. If there's one hole in my wardrobe it's that of an oversized parka that I can throw on over the pullover/denim jacket deal I have so often. I'm looking at getting a ring coat but they seem to come in so many different fabrics and configuration. A melton one is my preference but a moleskin one seems the simplest way to go - don't want denim. Anyone know how often this thing is iterated and released? I'm in no hurry and up for buying used. I'm also a little worried about it being comically large if I go with my normal size (2), because really it's only my chest and shoulders that are a 2 and my sleeve/torso length tend to be closer to a small.

  11. It’s not a repro jacket, but Companion Denim’s interpretation is sort of cut like a type 3 with a hybrid between 2/3 sort of details. Mine is heretically sanforized old stock Cone denim with poly stitching, but it’s really nicely done. It’s my slimmest jacket which is the main reason I’m not in it more often, but it still fits and still gets good use.

If I wanted a longer/slimmer jacket I’d probably look at type 3 iterations generally.

I’m 5’8”, 150 lb, with a 40” chest and 30” waist and I’ve found that while I can wear the slimmer things, the boxier versions give me more room around/chest shoulders which is why I prefer them - probably a bit opposite of you.

I will say my Sugar Cane 1953 (I have the blanket lined) in size 38 works pretty well for me, but I wish it were about an inch or so shorter in the body. Again, that’s a point in your favor.

  12. It’s up there (for me) with rating jeans based on how well they dress up.

If you throw a blazer on with jeans you’re dressing down the blazer (imo), not the other way around.

The whole concept to me is still a bit misdirected - if you’re going to dress up, just own it. It’s not that I don’t think jeans can look nice and clean but there are better options if that’s the point. It’s like those Cole Haan “dress” shoes with sneaker soles. They look confused. I mean do what makes you happy but that is not any sort of positive development to my mind.

But I agree it’s not an actual issue with quality. It’s never bothered me at all.

  13. Yea there is definitely a contingent of people who go into the store because of a certain sort of curb appeal and then just pay whatever the price tag is without thinking too hard. They may think “nice jeans” but quite a few don’t really know why they’re nice - at least not in the way that people on this forum really would. And they’ll never care.

At that level of income there are quite a few people who will pay twice the price for a level of convenience anyways.

  14. I never knew he got into art, and I loved to see that he did.

It makes it even worse that he took his own life. People never talk about that shit that way when it happens but having personally known three people in recent years who have done it I think it’s pretty dangerous to ignore that fact. I wish he’d gotten the help he needed, he clearly still had a lot to give and a lot of people to reach with his work.

RIP to a true creative soul.

  15. I actually don’t dislike them generally, but I don’t love the back pockets. Anything vaguely reminiscent of Lee is a hard no for me.

But really, fair price for the labor or not, these days after $225 or so the law of diminishing returns for me sets in fast and hard when it comes to jeans. I can maybe be pushed a little beyond that on occasion apparently, but not that far.

I hope someone enjoys them, I’m sure they will.

  16. i looked at them too but the measurements just don't compute to me in general.

the thigh is really under 10 inches? that can't be right! especially if the waist is closer to a 32 in real sizes?

also, it looks like it's his slimmest cut anyways, so even if they fit i'd pass - but good looking out!
