Do you think Japanese people agonize over ‘culturally appropriating’ American fashion to build....basically their whole apparel industry?

You may misunderstand the concept of cultural appropriation (regardless of if we believe it's happening within "techwear").

Japanese adaptation of American military/work-wear is not appropriation... however, if a Japanese design design something that uses Korean culture as its base, that would be appropriation. The notion of appropriation lies in power dynamics between cultures. I'm loathe to quote Wikipedia, but it's a good summary --

"Cultural appropriation, often framed as cultural misappropriation, is a concept in sociology dealing with the adoption of the elements of a minority culture by members of the dominant culture. It is distinguished from equal cultural exchange due to the presence of a colonial element and imbalance of power."

The key is the dynamic between dominant and dominated... A fetishism and use of another culture that has been taken by force, or is often oppressed in ways that prevent it from expressing its own values, while the oppressor uses those same values and aesthetics themselves.

down was the first thing that came to mind i guess. just wanted something warm to wear under shells haha.

Ah, in that case Stone Island, SI:SP, acr, and Arc’teryx (regular and veilance) have lots of options that are fantastic and a huge range in price. The obvious answer is J58-WS, but $$$ and hard to come by. The Veilance Mionn with Coreloft is another good option. Less expensive could be something like the Arc’teryx Atom or Cerium, both quite nice. The main Stone Island line has tons of stuff right now, and IMO some of the main line pieces and Shadow Project are becoming more and more similar in many respects.

Probably even more from places like Patagonia if you want a more outdoors-y kind of thing.

Edit: And of course the new ACG bombers and 3-in-1, if the patterns and colours work for you.

anyone have any recommendations for a light down jacket that isn't too puffy?

Out of curiosity, why down vs something with a lighter weight to warmth ratio (I.e. primaloft)?

I have used the grav pockets to store a debit card with Interac Flash so I could just tap with my hand when shopping.

I've done this, and with my transit card. I also use them sort of like the ski-pass arm pockets on lots of outdoors equipment... small papers, things you need to have handy but don't weigh anything. For those I really just use it as a zippered pocket, then inside opening is not useful...

The other problem with putting your phone in the gravity pocket, besides fit and actually getting it out quickly, is that it's really annoying to have that much weight at the end of your sleeve. It hangs in a strange way, and when you lift your arm you have a small weight at the end of the sleeve.

I have a J47R as well, and I usually just roll it up pretty tight so the velcro closure covers the Speedlock. I'm usually afraid to keep it rolled up though because I'm afraid it will wear out the GT overtime. Does anyone keep it stowed 100% of the time (provided it's not raining)?

    IMG_9813.jpeg

That's basically how I stow mine as well. I keep it rolled most of the time when it's not raining or cold/windy... Seems to be fine for the hood.

I don't think anything will make suede weatherproof.

Yeah. In this case, as with a few of them, I’m more interested in protecting them from damage and stains then actually making them weatherproof.

  10. Hey fellow shoe enthusiasts. I'm trying to get my sneakers, shoes, and boots ready for bad weather. Does anyone have experience with any of these hydrophobic sprays? The two main ones I've come across locally are Grangers Footwear Repel and Jason Markk Repel. The Grangers is way cheaper, but I want something I can use on my sneakers, suede, and leather (so no discoloration, still breaths, etc).

Any recommendations or experiences with these things? Are they really that different than the old-school suede and leather waterproofing sprays?

Let's face it, who look more daft, the person swanning and skidding around in their $700 fashion pumps or the person happily trudging through the snow and slush in their old waterproof duckboots?

Count me in the latter any day!

For sure! And if you want to up your duckboot game and don't care about destroying $1k CAD boots, there's always these ;) :

  12. Yeah, agreed on really cold weather footwear. When it gets that cold or I'm doing outdoor winter activities I use my Arc'teryx Bora2 GTX with the insulated liner, works perfectly. It also doesn't look bad, but a little bulky for my day-to-day wear.

I'd definitely prefer a boot over a sneaker, although this would be pretty good for the early stages of a canadian winter, maybe the SFB would still reign supreme for the winter

Yeah. I’m trying to plan my attack this year. I’ve been wearing Canadian army surplus boots for years, but they’re pretty dead now (holes etc).

My thinking right now is sneakers like this for early and light weather days, then either my Arc’teryx Bora2 or Docs for nasty weather days.

I might still check out SFBs for the in between sneaker and Bora weather, if I can find some to try on.

  14. In my search for winter sneaker and boots I just came across these. A little busier than my usual taste, but I can see them being really versatile and holding up to the Canadian winter.

as the name suggests the jungle boots are the opposite of a winter boot. they're not waterproof or insulated but meant to be as breathable and quick-drying as possible. they even have drainage grommets in the sides.

Yeah, I know that of traditional jungle boots. Just wasn’t sure about these since they’re Salomon and released for F/W...

If that’s the case I’ll probably go back to SFBs for the winter.
