Anyone who paid any attention to the news/daily life has hopefully already gone through the process of realizing our country has drastically changed, but to watch Edward Snowden quitely stare out his hotel window as the scope of what he has revealed his country has done mentally crashes over him might be one of the saddest things I've seen this year on film.

I don't want the American legacy to be "by any means necessary," which certainly seems to be our approach to security. Security which, in the pursuit of a promise that cannot be kept ("never again") has damaged the economic viability of American companies, continues to blur the line between "ruler and ruled" versus "elected and electorate," and will prove to be continuously disastrous for foreign policy as we discriminate between American citizens and foreigners, further reinforcing the rhetoric of us against them.

First off, any comparisons to Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing to this movie are a stretch of Mr. Fantastic proportions. This movie doesn't have even a hundredth of that movie's honesty, style, and cultural importance. Anyone who pretended this movie could compare in order to sell this movie's tickets, shame on you.

I don't enjoy sitting through mediocre films (who does) but the fact remains that I have sat through many more mediocre films by white directors than I have mediocre films by black directors. And in the spirit of "never hate a movie" there are the moments that made this movie worthwhile. The struggle for identity is something is real and can be traumatic, especially when you are confronted with situations that demand you choose who you are. Dear White People is at its best in these scenes.

The movie's biggest problems stemmed from the characters themselves, who seemed to be reverse engineered from stereotypes rather than being characters who happened to fit into certain stereotypes.

The movie also suffered from tonal shifts that didn't fit the mood of the majority of the movie at all. It could have played it straight and simply parodied the experience of black students at an ivy, but had to throw in a heavy-handed sick father storyline (which we are given zero reason to care about, because we don't know who he is beyond "protagonist's dad) as well as a classic heist wrap up for NO REASON. It wasn't a heist movie. At all.

I'd much rather recommend Fruitvale Station than Dear White People, but both have their place.

  3. Can we collectively make something like this happen again? Could do a cotton duck to be traditional, or choose something new if so desired. If you'd be willing, neptune, you could start out with the duck (or w/e it ends up being) and the participants can line up from there.

  4. Went to William Gibson's reading/Q+A/book signing at University Book Store and he was decked out. Wasn't wearing his jacket indoors but saw it slung over the back of his chair and it was a GT variant. Also wearing a past season's black fleece (?) hoodie with dual chest pockets, P16A-S in Raf Green, and Common Projects black achilles lows. Should have taken a picture for posterity/ID purposes but by the time I was getting my book signed I didn't want to bother him.

If anyone else goes to his book signing I'd expect he'd be dressed similarly, and hopefully you'd have the chance to be in on the joke/chat for a moment about ACR.

As a sidenote, during the Q+A I asked him if he was fascinated with the importance of marketing eclipsing the products being sold or if he wrote about the topic because this pattern is detrimental. He responded by asserting that his novels are not intended to be didactic (his word, not mine: intended to teach, particularly in having moral instruction as an ulterior motive) but he also mentioned earlier on in his Q+A that his politics sometimes slip through the cracks when he is writing characters.

  5. Bruised kindly lent me Neuromancer by William Gibson four weeks ago, which I proceeded to read in an evening and change. Since then I have read in this order:

    Zero History

    Spook Country

    Count Zero

    Mona Lisa Overdrive

    Pattern Recognition

    Burning Chrome

    Distrust that Particular Flavor

    Idoru

    Virtual Light

Tomorrow, I get to see Mr. Gibson in person and pick up a copy of The Peripheral. He's doing a book tour, but I suspect any of his fans on here would already know that.

Despite the beauty of its animation, a great deal was lost in translation. Version offered was dubbed not subbed (ugh) and used Chloe Grace Moretz for the voice of Princess Kaguya. Not a Moretz fan, and even less of a fan of her voice acting. Slow paced movie as well.

  7. Sour Soul is out February 17th, and I cannot wait. BBNG has been set to do big things, and its always good to hear some live instrumentation in the hip hop universe.

  8. "I think, you know, the great rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel used to say indifference to evil is more insidious than evil itself. George Bernard Shaw says it in the Devil's Discipline, the early play: indifference is the essence of humanity. And my -- one of my heroes, the great man of letters in America ever, William James, said indifference is the one trait to make the very angels weep. The expansion of indifference to other people's suffering is the most dangerous phenomenon..."- Cornel West

Milo recently used this quote a song and it stood out to me, especially as older generations continue to comment that "my generation" doesn't care about other people in the way that theirs did. I have heard repeatedly that their generation fought for what was right, and damn the consequences. However, I don't believe that humans have changed that dramatically in how they feel about each other. Drastic cultural shifts, though, have accelerated the ability to distract ourselves by leaps and bounds.

The phenomenon of widespread internet access and the introduction of the smartphone "never being bored"/"always on" means that, if we want, we can choose to avoid thinking about the problems of others with remarkable success. And, honestly, I think we all have days where we would prefer that to be the case. To care, to exercise empathy, is draining and can leave you jaded quickly. With the torrents of information available as well, the possibility of knowing and caring about everything there is to know and care about is impossible.

That means we have to choose, just like every generation before us, what we will fight for. And these fights will not be comfortable.

For me, offshore production is always going to be an issue. When it comes down to it, I've cared about how I present myself and how others present themselves for a long time, and it makes me sick to see the citizens of extremely fortunate countries in the world physically clothed in the apathy that we are rightfully accused of.

I thank sufu for being a place where people admit that they care, and for fostering a culture of integrity. When I chose to be a bullshit person in the past, I got called on it. We can choose to be bullshit people, but that shouldn't ever slide here. You call me on my shit, I'll try to call you on yours.

Thought this was fantastic. Incredibly atmospheric due in great part to the soundtrack, vivid colors and kinetic cinematography, excellent performances from the cast, darkly hilarious script, and the themes of the film, while certainly familiar, work in conjunction with the current cultural landscape.

So this is what gets 85 rep these days, huh? Cardigan, white shirt, cropped trousers, GATs. He nailed the proportions, fit, and matched colors. Is that the bar to clear?  Call me bitter about getting negged on my last fit all you want, but this is basic competency with clothing.

  11. I think I'll go down on Sunday to hang out on the hill and would be more than glad to see acts I've never heard of.

Despite Dum Dum Girls being the multi-year girl band crush, I'd like go see Rocky. Crowd should be out of control.
