These Russell Moccasins found me - as they do - with a compelling 50% off deal at Zabou.  The shop wouldn't ship sale items to the UK (but they will ship full price items hmm) so I used FromJapan, who combined with UK customs to erode some, but not all, of the 50% saving.

Anyhow, pleased that my sizing forecast worked out well... because they are very nice shoes... just perfect for the wet muddy British winter :)

Shameless plug that I have listed a similar pair but with Christy sole in the sales thread. Probably the most versatile shape for moccasins. Enjoy!

  2. I have sadly developed Morton's neuroma and can't wear my beloved Russell Moccasins x Nepenthes chukkas, size US 9/UK8/EU 42.

Roughout Laramie leather uppers in near perfect condition, rawhide laces. Christy soles, some life left in them but resoling down the line should not be difficult. I would say fit is true to Brannock size, probably a D width, with medium weight socks. Have always used shoe trees.

If you're in Europe, here is the listing on another site, with right-side-up photos. https://www.vinted.fr/items/3748186772-chukka-moccasins-russell-x-nepenthes-new-york-engineered-garments

Asking 200 Euros/190 pounds/$220 US etc. Paypal, Wise transfer etc. I think shipping from France should be about 30 euros w/in Europe, we can split. North America...maybe 50 euros, maybe less?

Really, these are forever shoes so looking for a new caretaker. (i.e., SuFu discount...) Shoot me a PM and let's talk chukkas.., Do I know why these photos are upside down? I do not!

@peter1 there is a sale thread

    Here

    Thank you. Will post there.

Edited: They are in the community sale thread. If you're looking for some versatile Russells in a size 8 uk/9us/42 at a good (SuFu discount) price, please have a look. Thanks much.

  4. Apologies for shilling here, have no idea what's going on with classifieds in SuFu anymore.

I have sadly developed Morton's neuroma and can't wear my beloved Russell Moccasins x Nepenthes chukkas, size US 9/EU 42. If you're in Europe, here's the listing. (And if you can tell me how to advertise on SuFu will gladly do so) https://www.vinted.fr/items/3748186772-chukka-moccasins-russell-x-nepenthes-new-york-engineered-garments

Really, these are forever shoes so looking for a new caretaker. (i.e., SuFu discount...)

  5. Just picked up 3 Sunray Ts. Excellent fit, really TTS for a typical US/European medium (as they should be for a UK company). Maybe slightly tight around the neck but that usually stretches anyway.

Fabric is a teeny bit lighter than I thought but really nice hand out of the box. The length, as promised, is slightly longer than other brands, which is a +/- depending on torso/desired fit. What I really like are the colors, I got sage green/gray heather/light blue and they're nice and muted rather than shouty. They seem to ask for a delicate, inside-out wash so will do that...

  6. I personally don't like the way denim chinos fade. That said, I am a huge chino/khaki fan in general. Some of my favorites: Tellason straight fit made from Cramerton cloth (very traditional American trousers, mid rise); Engineered Garments Workday Type 41 (excellent fabric, breaks in nicely, very trad fit); Burgus Plus type 401 (mercerized cotton, tough as nails but break in nicely). If you can find the "original" Bills Khakis in Cramerton cloth -- those were great; had a pair in the late 90s. Sadly the company went down hill soon after. An interesting pair I'm just starting to break in is A Vontade officer pants -- high-count, refined cloth, generous but not sloppy rise, great details like a big flap behind the fly to keep things tidy. I'm also interested in The Quartermaster chinos from Italy but the rise looks daunting...

  7. Seeing these vintage sweats selling for big money reminds me of the haul that got away...hindsight etc...My high school was still using old school athletic gear up until the mid-1980s. Around 1985/6 they transitioned to "modern" fabrics like nylon and current (for the time) Nike shoes. So out with the old Onitsuka leather spikes and Chuck Taylors and in with Nike waffle racers and Jordan 1s...and also out with the thick 100% cotton Champion sweats, with the xtra long cuffs etc.

At some point the school district must have thrown away 1,000 pieces or more with the school logo and cc/track & field/field hockey/tennis etc emblazoned on the the chest, with the sizing etc. If you figure a vintage Champion sweat is selling for, what, $200-400, then do the math...of course no one knew they'd be worth squat so that's why vintage is pricy...and it was no fun to train in those old Champions -- heavy, restrictive, baggy etc...

It’s just as easy to have tcb verify actual measurements.

Ah, didn't know they did that but haven't tried to buy direct from TCB in a few years. I know their e-commerce site seems to be improving and adding features. Anyway, these days with covid/Brexit etc and shipping being more costly and uncertain it's best to have pre-shipping verification.

Yes, definitely size down for the indigo from your black 50s size. I got 33 in indigo and 34 in black and that turned out right.

I went the other way around. 32 in black, 33 in indigo. Although caveat is that black were unwashed and indigo were one-wash. Same measurements...so definitely check if you can; maybe buy from Denimio and have them verify actual measurements...

  10. This Colimbo jacket is fabulous, especially in blackwatch: https://masuya1997.com/pickup/colimbo-croaker-field-coat-2

But too rich for my blood. IIRC it was about 500 euros plus proxy etc...

Masuya has a great selection of brands. I check it for inspiration now and again.

Edit: not as expensive as I thought: Around 39000 yen plus shipping/proxy. So maybe a total of 450 euros...

It’s ok buddy - I know ARCA - doc and I were just engaging in some banter.

I appreciate the links tho’ - thank you!

Ah, ok, cool...it's a bit esoteric if you're not a roundy-round racing fan...

It’s just a typo - it should say ‘A Car’

ARCA is one of the oldest auto racing (stock cars, that is) sanctioning bodies in the U.S., dates to the 50s. It was a competitor to Nascar at one point and now, apparently, is owned by Nascar.

    https://www.arcaracing.com/

    https://stockcarracing.fandom.com/wiki/ARCA

    https://www.smartmotorist.com/arca-racing

That T is really cool by the way. I got the ARCA reference immediately but if you're not a US racing fan of a certain, shall we say, regional orientation, it wouldn't register.

(to complicate things a little bit, there apparently was also another ARCA series in the 50s that involved sports cars, as the current ARCA was once called MARC, the M standing for "Midwest" and became ARCA in the mid 60s...)

  13. What's been anyone's experience with Moonstar? The Gym Courts look great -- they have more padding than Gym Classic, whic seems to be what most non-Japanese retailers stock.

Seems like they're often on sale at various places for under 100 euros. How do they fit? I'm guessing size down half for sockless or thin socks? TIA

  14. One more Lee/VF tidbit: In the early 70s my parents bought matching reversible leather tuxedos from Lee -- I don't quite know how to describe it except the tops were Rider jackets in smooth/suede and the pants were basically jeans. The leather was unlined, very thin, dark brown with white contrast stitching...

AFAIK they bought them for a costume party -- even 45 years ago it was a bit much. I'm sure they've long been tossed out but what a find if they weren't.

  15. ^^I definitely remember my first pair of Levis. they were orange tab as red tabs were 10 bucks more! They didn't fit as well as Lees, which had a pretty forgiving cut.

hello im looking for a reliable size chart for 50s slim jeans, tcb, blue in green and denimo all seem conflicting, even denimo is conflicting itself in an email.

im 33 in iron hearts and 32 in fullcounts

it appears 31 tagged size would be 32.8 inches which is what would be perfect according to tcb

Hmm. Ime either 31 or 32 should be good and probably won't make any real difference. My 33s are an inch bigger than the tagged size, bought thru Denimio who recommended it and the waist is pretty stretchy. But note that the rise is quite low.

I also have a pair of raw black slim 50s in 32 and the post wash measurements are identical to the indigo one wash 33s, hence I can't be definitive...

  17. I like the EU Lee line but just can’t wear Lee, for a possibly silly reason. I grew up in Reading, Pa., the home of VF Corp., and the site of the first real factory outlets. In the 70s and 80s everybody wore Lees because you could get them at the huge (5 stories) Lee outlet for $10 a pair - fancy-pants Levi’s were $35 or maybe $40 at the time so once we were old enough to get summer jobs we all saved our money to buy 501s. Lees were for the poor slobs who couldn’t afford Levi’s.

Of course now I wish I’d bought 500 pairs of those Lees and stashed them away...jackets too...i think much of it was still miUSA until the mid 80s...VF offshored all production at some point but not sure when.

I've been eying a number of their pieces, but I'm a little afraid to order from Japan right now. Their shirts look fabulous and they're often on sale over there. Might be worth proxying.

Not convinced that jodhpur pants are going to make a comeback, however, and some of their T-Shirts are racially cringeworthy.

  19. It's interesting that US brands like RGT, Tellason, Left Field, Railcar, Raleigh etc don't get much action here anymore. I really like Tellason and Left Field. I suspect it's because it's too easy to find -- and I say this as someone who has played shipping roulette from Japan plenty of times. Or maybe because it's "boring."

I'm sure this subject has been flogged to death but I still find it interesting.

But I can't really see much material difference between, say, Tellason and TCB, and I have stuff from both brands.

Roy, of course, is an exception among US brands.

Interested in the slim 50s. Do they shrink when washed and how much do they stretch post wash. Thanks!

I have nominal shrinkage with cold washing, then they stretch back in a day or so.

does anyone have a somewhat awkward second button on their 50s jacket? all my other buttons do up perfectly, except the second button down is really strained and pulls significantly. i've noticed this is super common in various TCB fit pics too, although it's just isolated to that second button...

Second from top? Not so much an issue with the button placement or hole size, but in general I'd say the chest is not as roomy as it could be for the sizing (a 40 in my case). I wear mine generally open as an overshirt over a T or light oxford/madras, but when I do button it, normally just the 3/4 buttons because I can't be bothered to do up any more. My problem (well, not really a problem, more of an observation) is that the waist circumference could be larger, or the length could be shorter. I'm pretty slim but if I fasten the last button the waist rides up and bunches out, probably because it's a couple of inches longer than a vintage Type 2.

Yes!  Chore coats are extremely practical, but not warm.  A warm one would be a nice addition.

I've thought about the Tabby's jacket.  Nice layout, but a fairly short and boxy design, true?

I have blanket lined Carhartt with biswing back for “real” chores and it’s exceptionally warm.

I'm personally just against chunky chelsea boots in general. In my mind, Chelsea boots are fairly sleek. If I'm going to buy a more hefty laceless boot, I would just go with engineers, pecos/ropers, or a fairly subtle cowboy boot. I'm sure I'm in the minority here with my chelsea boot opinions, but I just would never go for those chelseas over his engineers.

I feel the same way about Chelsea boots. Some of the high-end workwear offerings from Viberg etc are more like Blundstones. But a true Chelsea to me is more like something that the Beatles might have worn in 1963. I have had a couple of different Chelseas from various brands, and they've all been sort of "dressy." i especially like Barker's higher-end Chelseas.
