  1. If you check the look book, there is a fit pic - altho they seem to be labelled as 20s Balloon pants for some reason.

The Rin Tanaka book called "King of Vintage" shows some chino type pants in denim with a rectangular cloth tag and below it what looks like a paper tag that has a depiction of a hot air balloon superimposed with the text "LEVI BALLOONS" (page 73).

I wish I wore a sample size. Would have loved to have the Henley.

  2. Faggots look a bit like wrapped up meatballs - rather like haggis, they're usually made of offal, heart, liver, or other bits, wrapped up in caul (stomach lining). As with other offal and traditional English dishes, they seem to be getting a lot more popular lately (altho that might just be in my house)

Here it is in the flesh, so to speak:

  3. I'd assume chain stitching was done in the first place because Levi's expected their customers were going to hem their jeans post shrink. Pull the right thread and a chain stitch will unravel very easily for hemming.

I can attest that this works. I have a pair of 2006 44s that came with untrimmed threads in the chainstitching on the left leg. One day I stepped on one of the untrimmed threads with my right foot and swung my left leg forward. Like magic, all the chainstitching on the front of the leg dropped off.

I had been meaning to trim the threads and cursed myself.

  4. Great stuff Cash. Tried to rep.

My wife and I had our honeymoon in Utah. One of my favorite memories is of driving through Grand Staircase/Escalante. We had been staying at Bryce Canyon and it started snowing hard on the day we were supposed to leave. The clerk at the desk when we checked out told us not to leave and to definitely not drive through Grand Staircase, but we did anyway. Luckily, we got behind a convoy of three RVs that blazed a trail for us. They were all identical Winnebagos. They pulled over at an overlook with an incredible view as did we. Each one had been rented by a German couple living a Wim Wenders fantasy of the American West. They were dressed in black leather with metal studs. Not motorcycle wear but their idea of what a cowboy should wear: chaps, cowboy hats, etc. One of the men even walked with a cowboy gait, like he was saddle sore. It must have been the captain's chair. We chatted for a while and then went on our way.

  5. Farhad I am with erk on the 47s. I had a pair that I bought true to size and cold soaked. I could wear them, but I started to hate them because they WAY too tight in the crotch. After a while, I never wanted to sit down if I was wearing them.

  6. Thanks for all the nice comments!

riff I don't think there are any original fragments of the boats, although there are several other boats in a shed like the one at the dock that are used for a recreation of the crossing every December.

tg dkatz and paul Two long posts in one week for me and I am exhausted. I don't know how you guys do it.

  7. Continuing my duties as tour guide last weekend, we took my folks to Washington's Crossing, the place where George Washington crossed the Delaware to attack the Hessian troops in Trenton fighting for the British in the Revolutionary War. Trenton is about ten miles south of the crossing point. Until that point in the war, Washington and the the Continental Army had suffered many defeats, so the battle is considered the turning point of the Revolutionary War.

The Delaware River divides the states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. These pictures were all taken on the Pennsylvania side which preserves many old buildings.

On Christmas night and into Boxing Day, about 2400 troops of the Continental Army crossed the river in the snow.

This is a reproduction of one of the boats, although a guide told us the boats used by Washington were about fifty percent longer. They were normally used to haul cargo up and down the river.

Crossing the river is a bit easier now.

  8. Cross post from ROYXCone thread.

The Civilian Conservation Corps jacket. (Self Edge calls it the FDR jacket.) It's very comfortable. These pictures are more accurate for color than the ones on the History Preservation site.

  10. Spring has finally arrived.

    tree.jpg

Spring break for my RXCs ended on Wednesday, but my spring break is continuing. My folks came for a visit yesterday so I played tour guide today.

We went to a farm that raises grass fed cows and sheep as well as chickens, pigs and goats.

Our goal was to buy eggs. These are collected in the morning and sold the same day. We arrived around 2:00. They were already sold out. But there were lots of cute animals.

I am not sure that I qualified.

    But the goats

    and Shetland pony definitely did.

We also met a young bull named Jack who didn't seem too excited about our presence.
