  1. Saturday morning, we went to the local farmer’s market. This seems to be a theme of many of my posts lately.

    2011-07-31025.jpg

But this farmer’s market was better than most since it had a tasting of rye whiskey called Whistle Pig. We arrived at the market just after it opened at 9:00. I am pretty sure I was the first person to partake. (That is not me in the shorts.)

It was good, but at $66 a bottle, way too pricey to make a purchase. Although it was touted as a local product, every part of the production up to bottling took place in Canada, though the plans are to move all parts of the production to Vermont in the near future.

  2. The RXCs and I just got back from vacation in Vermont.

Driving up the New York State Thruway, our thermometer kept reading between 98 and 100 degrees. We were sure it was broken until we found out that the temperature that day in Central Park had reached 104. Vermont is supposed to be a place to cool off in the summer, but the temperatures were in the 90s when we arrived. This is the main street.

Our first stop was Middlebury where my brother-in-law and his family are renting a house for the summer.

One great thing about Vermont is that rents are low and many businesses that would have failed elsewhere like this five and dime manage to hang on.

    2011-07-31015.jpg

Unfortunately the house my brother-in-law is renting has three stories of glass facing west, so it was as hot as hell when we arrived. But it does offer beautiful views of the setting sun.

Middlebury was founded as a mill town in the 18th century due to the falls which offered excellent power to the water wheels.

    2011-07-31012.jpg

One of the main uses of the power was to cut and shape the local marble.

    2011-07-31018.jpg

The town has retained much of its character. Fortunately for its current prosperity, Middlebury College was founded there in 1800.

My niece says that the smell of Vermont is the smell of cow manure. I didn’t realize how true that was until we exited a restaurant on the main street after dinner even though there wasn’t a cow in sight. I don’t think there was even a cow within a mile of where we were.

The town square has a white Congregationalist Church with a tall steeple like many New England towns.

Finally got to read the paper before bed and found this review of Paul T’s book on the first page of the arts section of the NYT. A very positive review from that writer and his reviews usually get buried in the middle of the section.

  3. Ha, thanks John, I haven't seen that edition yet... hope they got all the right pics in the right order...

The pictures seem like they are in the right order, but I just took a quick look.

My favorite sentence so far: "In the admittedly narrow niche of pseudopsychedelic cockney music-hall children's songs, it reigns supreme."

  4. Roy's Jeans - The Nihon Straight Leg

These jeans will go on sale on Saturday, July 9th, at all Self Edge stores and via the online store at 10am (PST) the same day. Considering the time it takes to produce these and the fact that every jean is produced by one man from start to finish restocks or new models do not come often, but when they do, they're worth the wait.

Just to be clear, does 10am (PST) mean 11am (PDT)?

  5. The theme this week at my daughter's day camp is holidays. Today the kid's in her group made drawings of holidays from October, all of them obscure. One of the ones she chose was Denim Day. I'm not even sure what day that is. Here is her drawing. The figure at the bottom is me in my RxC, and I am saying "I love denim."

My daughter is always telling my friends that I waste all our money on jeans.

  6. ^I almost bought a pair of the pantaloons just for the rivets. I've never seen that tooling mark before on any reproduction rivets, but from looking at pictures of vintage Levi's with flat rivets, it seems like it was more common than not.

  7. Beyond the fact that these might be a junior pair, the text says '22-'36 so I don't think we can use this pair as a reference. They are more likely to be from the late end of that period than the beginning.

    018.jpg

One thing that bugs me on the 22s from Cinch is that the rivets aren't flattened. We know LVC can do that, so why don't they? And I know that we can flatten them ourselves, but we shouldn't have to.

That said, I might be picking up a pair.

  8. Went down to this club, london's oldest jazz, blues and rock venue. the pistols, siouxsie, clash all played some of their first London shows here.. but well before that it played host to blues singers in the 50s...

    100club.jpg

Don't the Clash even mention the 100 Club in one of their songs? I am thinking it is Deny, but my memory might be failing me.

    Great posts everyone.

  9. Went to a local farmer's market today.

    2011-07-02024.jpg

Looks like it is time for the first wash to get some shrinkage and contrast.

    2011-07-02022.jpg

The farmer's market is held in the parking lot of a fuel oil company. Quite idyllic.

I am not a big fan of summer except when the first peaches come.

    2011-07-02027.jpg

There are still lots of blueberries.

  10. One thing I wanted to ask for a long time: Some of us even have 5 or more pairs of LVC or other raw denim in the wings. How do you store them? Just put them i the closet? Do you protect them from say moths?

I actually have most of my unworn jeans in kind of a bag that looks like this :

    http://static12.moebel-profi.de/media/catalog/product/w/e/wenko-wenko-unterbettkommode--liberta-verschiedene-sets-m-wk-sbe-0453-1.jpg

It might be totally overdone.....i know. B

Moths only eat fibers produced by animals (mammals, birds, insects) not by plants.

I hang most of my jeans with a belt loop on a peg. For others that I don't wear much, I use hangers with clips.

  11. After all that work, I had to head to the general store for some more Fels Naptha to wash my Roys.

    7a66bff8.jpg

When I was a kid, my mother always threatened to wash my mouth out with Fels Naptha if I used inappropriate language. Not sure if she ever followed up on the threat, but the brown color was definitely a deterrent.

  12. I went by the Levi's NYC store in the Meatpacking district hoping to see the stripey shirt. The only LVC they had were the raw models (which was good) and some t-shirts. Pretty disappointing. A salesperson told me they might be carrying the "fashion" line in the near future.

  13. Photos of my LVCJP 1953s. The denim is much closer to the US made 47s than the 55s. The fit is somewhere in between. The denim has a distinct red cast. These are one of my favorite pairs.

I love the asymmetrical crossover on the double needle arcs and the stitchover at the concealed rivets.

  14. Farhad posted this in several other threads, but it deserves to be posted here too. I am still hoping for a signing in NYC. Why does the left coast get all the fun events?

Mike Harris is having a book signing tomorrow at the Levi's Malibu store. Ill be there and would love to see some Levi's aficionados.

edit- alright, not erk, who posted less than a month ago.

Sorry, I forgot this was a jeans contest. I thought it was just an online social forum. Will post pics soon.

  16. Nice pair of 555 duck pants, 30W:
Mustard chinos go to min2max, who's posted here before, but promises to come out of the shadows and start posting pics.

Should post chinos, and roy's giant package, in the AM (it's hard finding a van big enough for the latter)

I though roy's giant package was already in San Francisco.

  17. Nice pair of 555 duck pants, 30W:

And here is a 555 duck jacket to go with them:

Not my listing, just to be clear.

PS Just picked up a pair of the natural indigo 1873 first blue jeans off the bay despite your negative comments in the lvc 501 thread, Paul. I was intrigued by the natural denim angle despite the double stitched yoke. Will post pics when I get them.
