  1. Yeah, I'm not disappointed. They'll be tough wheels to train on, and only 40g heavier than my Open Pros. To swap them out with the same lacing, does anyone know if I will need shorter spokes, or just longer nipples? The CXP 21s are a slightly higher profile than the Open Pros.

    google "spocalc," my friend.

  2. Mavic CXP21s

For as bomb-proof as Open Pros are, those are just as good if not better. My philosophy on wheels is: train/ride on wheels rated for at least double my weight and race on wheels where I am pushing the weight limit rating.

I'm beginning to think I need a new saddle. Right now I have a Selle Italia Kit carbon. It's only 125 grams, but that means that there's not much comfort (not that I'm looking for it, but still).

This may be a paradox, but I have found that a cushier saddle tends to chew up my sensitive parts more the longer the ride. I trained an entire winter on a flite with the cover and padding removed and the nose ground off and it was more comfortable than any cushy thing out there. Wish I had a pic. Something like this concept. That being said, shape is more important than cushion and the only way to evaluate shape is to sit on the damn thing in real life conditions. Buy two or three at a time, ride each a week and sell the extras on eBay. It is worth it in the end.

  3. Can i get some opinions on brooks saddles, i hear allot of mixed responses. What modles do people have, they good, whats the care like?

brooks saddles are aight, but real men ride a flite (selle italia, that is). the new shape is even better than the original.

  4. Took the bz out for a day trip to the Deering Estate

    P1070806.jpg

where we saw this puny little shack of a place

    P1070886.jpg

    P1070857.jpg

(compared to the guy Deering's half-brother who built the behemoth Vizcaya which is in all types of movies about Miami) and then got to go inside to check out this

    P1070851.jpg

(ballin' banister decorations) and then got to go up on the roof because the guide was real nice

    P1070869.jpg

    walked under these.

Obligatory self jawnz crotch shot (AW Grifters):

Sorry that my lens hood got in the way of all the shots. I gotta work that out. Enjoy.

  5. I went out today with my bz for a romantic day trip and stopped in at the craft store on the way home. I picked up a punch, a bag of scrap latigo leather, a needle, a mallet-driven punch set, and some waxed thread and got to work when I got home. All were Tandy Leather brand. Seems like decent enough stuff to cut my teeth on. Now gotta work out some nicer leather and a few more tools which I now see will make life much easier.

Here is what I came up with:

A little card case (cards go in horizontally in this picture):

    P1070925.jpg

    Back:

    Front:

    For perspective:

And, a question for the real leather people out there, when you are stitching, do you punch every hole with a punch or do you use an awl or something and punch as you go along? I have a revolving scissors-type punch that I used for rubber somewhere at my parent's house and wondering if that would make life easier than tapping every hole with the mallet.

Some expert how-tos or pictures of the process would be amazing. I know some of this stuff is trade secrets, but anything would be a help!

  6. why would you need any of this as a pre-med?

as a pre-med, the only reason i can think of is date rape and illegal surgery on impoverished and underserved people on medical mission trips. as a med student, same, but at least it is a little more in the 'professional development' vein and a little less creeper.

  7. @zissou - must spread, but thanks a ton for the advice. i don't have regular access to a car nor really time to get up there, but i am gonna hunt for a store in miami proper. looks like there is one called florida leather supply on the (in)famous calle ocho (8th street) but no info on the interwebz about it. at the very least, checking it out will e a cultural experience.

  8. is there any chance that a complete leather newb with a lot of spare time on his hands could cook up a wallet, reign, belt and a pair of moccasins (a la arrow ankle boots) in the span of a summer? if so, how would you recommend this newb get an intro into this sort of leather work (books, videos, etc.)? could all these items be made out of one side like this or would that be under/overkill? is this even the raw material that said newb would be looking for? any easy leatherworking tools/starter kits available anywhere that come highly recommended by you leather whizzes? thx for all the pron and info in this thread (still reading it) and any answers in advance. sorry if any of this was covered elsewhere.

  9. how is this for an edc bag dump (courtesy of life archive))? old school country doctor steez for my pre-med and med school homies.

    4624454238_6c0d9bd246_o.jpg

i think i am gonna do a raw leather doctor bag as my personal 'intro to leatherwork' summer project. don't know if i'll edc it, but it's worth it to bring something so cool back to a profession that is getting so un-cool by the minute (except for the edc potential -- stethoscope, otoscope, penlight, hand sanitizer wut!?). also, try to think of an instance now when drs. (in the us or western europe) would ever tote their minor surgical tools and a fairly complete pharmacy with them.

  10. to answer my own question from up the thread about retractor reels, i copped this from feebay.

    pic

    bpr4cnwbwkkgrhqmhckeuzu.th.jpg

the item was shipped fast and is exactly as pictured. the clip is strong, the reel case seems sturdy, the cable is steel and coated (i would guess to promote smooth gliding retraction), it retracts strongly and the 360deg swivelability of the head is nice. if you have a need for such a thing, i would recommend this. if it falls apart because it actually turns out to be a piece of crap, i will let ya'll know.

  11. yo edc people, i just busted my retractable id reel for holding my school id/access card. it was one of the cheap plastic numbers with gator clip on the back of the reel and nylon cord. anyone have any knowledge about these things or where i could get a really beefy one? i saw some generic chrome-bodied w/ steel cable on ebay and copped, but does anyone know of brand-name ones that are true workhorses and won't leave my school id lost on the floor somewhere? tia, my friends.

  12. Just out of curiosity; how do you think a muggers face would stand up against the strike bezel on the ultrafire?

i don't know if you're just teasing on my choice of light (it was cheap, aight?), but to answer your q seriously, i think i'd rather have a heftier light for the purpose of smashing face, something more the length of a kubaton or even a billie. in an overhand grip (LED facing pinky, thumb on clicky) the strike bezel barely sticks out of my fist (and i have small hands).

So in a sober situation; I was a track MVP... I'm gonna stick with Run-Fu.

i think i am with you on this one, and add some situational awareness (great euphemism, btw) to minimize chances of sober situations.

  13. P1070682.jpg

gotta share my new/old edc action. wayfarers w/ tactical pink croakies, red linen hanky (diy by my beautiful biddy), paul smith camo canvas wallet (cheaply constructed, not recommended), double paracord monkeyfist fob, gerber clutch, split pea and small CC prybar on split ring, fisher space pen, burts bees, folded index card w/ denim wear log, school access, new htc hero, spderco endura 4 wave, s biner with house key stuff... and the new stuff, a brinyte pd03a 1xaaa on a 10440 and an ultrafire a20 1xcr123 on an rcr123. both from DX.

totally new to this flashlight game, so how did i do?. i got unprotected batteries because that is what they had on DX. any of you flashlight experts wanna give me/sufu the quick rundown on these batteries so i don't die and/or blow up my crotch when i am edcing these lights? is safety really that big a deal? i got the trustfire multifunctional charger for the 10440 and a nano charger for the rcr-123. somewhere said to have a multimeter for li-ions, but is that imperative or just helpful? is the indicator light on the cheap chargers sufficient for my purposes? i am a med student, so the extent of my electrical training is mcat physics (V=IR). tia for the help, my friends.

  14. i carry 1/16" cord for making lanyards/bracelets/fobs for friends between class/during class. and not for potentially making; i actually have and do use it. but, its not paracord and i dont really carry it for utility purposes, more for crafting purposes when im bored.

this is what i am doing w/ my 6x100ft hanks of assorted colors.

I'm thirty-two motherfuckin' years old and i've spent most of my life traveling the world getting myself into strange situations and never once have i needed a paracord or rope.

Are you guys really finding the need to carry a paracord or is it more the obsession behind the idea and less the need to have it on you daily?

cord is like reusable duct tape in the wild. that said, 99% of the time, it will have no practical use besides making my edc look tacticool.

  15. ^^ That is a scrumptious series of posts right thurr.

Also, just managed to up my EDC:

    UltraFire A20 and batteries/charger

Brinyte PD03A and batteries and charger

Torx driver thing for knife repair/cleaning etc.

    11in1 tool card

    pill fob

All courtesy of DX. Gotta love Asia, man. Fill in my flashlight gaps or lemme know how I may get the best out of these cheapies until I really feel like upgrading.

Also, have some mad paracord coming from ebay (6x100 ft hanks in colors) Also, split pea, kubaton, emergency kit, swiss quick release and aviation mechanic keyring from CC.

    Too many $$$$.

Finally joining the ranks for real, though.

Also, planning to get a FL CWP and moar weppinz in a minute.

This EDC game does hell to the wallet. But, I guess little toys are still less expensive than big toys.

Will post pics when I get all this stuff.

  16. catching up on some sufu action here

    [orgasm status photos]

so ill that i had to take my jeans off and check out the construction. also, i notice that the pocket is sewn on in one fell swoop with the stitching on both pockets starting from the jeans right. these little personal details are what make AWs so special.

this is why we love ande whall so much.

    qft

    ^^^ Very nice Rob.

    co-sign. good goin'.

wearing my grifters right NOW. been a good 7 months straight now.

    no pics, no care!

  17. Your name starts with an R. Your sister was my girlfriend's roommate last year in DC. You "don't wash your jeans either and now you have three pairs." DBs, jawnz and a flannel look "like something [you] would wear every day." I think I remember you are into theater. Who are you, my girlfriend's ex-roomate's brother? Whoever you are, you must be on SuFu.

  18. hey guys pretty nice to bikes and wanting to get something for a beginner... aim to spend no more than 200-400 dollars...

something on the road... light weighted, even fixed gear will do the trick :) any suggestions on what brand/model i can get? thanks heaps

google is your friend, brah. http://www.roadbikeoutlet.com/single-speed-fixed-gear-fixie-bicyles.html or http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/road_bikes.htm might do it for you if you are looking soul-less and new. used would be your other bet.
