  1. Whats everyone's favorite explanation of the obesity epidemic in america?

I'm a big fan of the lowered cost of food due to industrialized production, ie GMO/Monsanto style large scale, high yield production of a few staple crops (corn, soy, proteins). I'm a time scale of 100 years, not the last decade. Source: http://mjperry.blogspot.com/2008/08/over-100-years-food-prices-have-fallen.html

There may have been a time where mass produced food as we see it today was economically nonviable. The cost of labor and food prices made it so. Raising chickens and a vegetable garden may have historically been the cheapest options, in addition to the healthiest (if 'healthiest' even has meaning in the 1800's). Today, running a garden or chicken coop is a sign that you have the leisure time and space (ie wealth) to do so.

Ok, so now that people can afford to eat themselves into the grave, why do they? I believe the answer to why lies in an emergent property of cheap food combined with capitalism. My favorite explanation is by David Kessler - so called hyperpalatable foods. it has been shown that there is a optimum combination of sugar, fat and salt which creates the most pleasure. This is why foods at large successful chains are distinctly "restaurant-y". All dishes undergo a development cycle where they are tweaked to pack the most palatable punch - every facet of a snickers bar (peanut size, moisture content, salt level, viscosity of caramel, etc) is tightly controlled, tested and optimized to the most delicious point possible. HFCS is not the culprit, only the cheapest means to the optimum sugar/fat/salt ratio.

There you have it. cheap, hyperpalatable food.

  2. I spend a lot of time thinking about obesity in america. It boggles my mind, that if you were to grab 2 random american dudes my height, one would weigh at least 45lbs more than me. The other would weigh 20-40lb more than me. Its not as if I'm a twig, i wear a size 32!

Does anyone else watch these climbing statistics with a inward sense of Schadenfreude? An adult who isn't carrying a spare tire is becoming a rare sight in the united states. The comparative attractiveness of a person who practices self discipline goes up, which has cascading beneficial effects in life. The higher the stats get, the more schadenfreude I feel.

  3. I feel ya man, i'm pretty set on the warehouses. Love the vintage look and their ability to gain a ton of character over time. Good ol american blue jeans with excellent japanese craftsmanship.

  4. Running an interest check here. I've got a pair of SEXIH07BK - black overdyes with the dog on the patch, used (i'd say 7/10), which i'm considering putting up for sale. 1 wash, 2 soak, 31 inch inseam size 33. Lots of black overdye left. These jeans fade to blue due to the overdye process, and only have got a slight wallet & butt fade. Only real downside is that it has a crotch repair and right side pocket repair. Retail $420, make me an offer. If there's interest, i'll get some quality pics detailing the condition.

  5. hmmmm real tempted to pull trigger on a pair of 660's however i'm torn on sizing. 31's would be a bit slim, but 32's may be on the bigger side. BiG sells them with some huge inseam (like 40 inches) - does the taper end past a certain length? In other words, are hems from 32 inches on wards all the same size? Its not the thickest denim, would it be wise to go on the slim side or the little bigger?? Any experience on stretching after the first ~two weeks?

On that note, if anyone is selling gently used or new 660's sz 31 or 32 hit me up.

  6. I have a strange respect, cloaked in irony, for the sissied voice of the kony 2012 video. I'm sure the complexities of the situation are not beyond him because he has obviously dedicated hundreds of hours studying it. The genius is how he took a gray issue and made it completely black and white. Then he took it a step further and exploited its human interest potential in a way that would make bono himself green with envy. 11+ million youtube hits in 2 days, nuff said.

If i were a man of power with a dangerously large conscience, instead of mobilizing hipsters I would focus my efforts on manipulating the so called "leaders" into letting the USA (god bless) plunder those sweet sweet natural resources, on the cheap. Bring in infrastructure, military strong arms and everybody profits.

No natural resources? Damn. You broke the first two rules of being a peaceful 3rd world country:

    1. Have abundant natural resources

    2. Don't lack abundant natural resources

  7. By posting hate about Kony 2012, i effectively bring it closer to its purpose, that is, spreading awareness. By not posting hate about Kony 2012, people won't know that I despise that video and its pussy hipster first world guilt pandering bullshit which makes me swell with rage.
