  1. It is serious and I stand behind it. I don't want my guitar screaming "I'm a rich ass homo trust fund queer" (no hate intended towards gays). I'd rather have my guitar communicate "I'm a badass, and yes, I DID pay $4000 for this", without being an eyesore.

so a 4000 dollar plain top is somehow better than a 4000 dollar figured top...?

and where does trust fund richer kid come into the arena from. epiphone makes some 400 dollar figured maple (albight be it laminate) that look OK without even a pricey tag. i doubt these "trust fund" kids would touch an epi.

also 4000 dollars is still 4000 dollars be it figured or painted top. and only the wealthy can afford to spend this much on a guitar regardless

and furthermore since when did your guitars paint scheme detemine your status and musical skill/ talent...

  2. Why anyone would want anything with QUILTED OR FLAMED parts is fucking beyond me....

i hope thats not serious, i've spent some time in the shop that cuts alot for both martin and taylor and seeing that figured maple up close and tilting the board to make the flames or quilting seem to move around (or guitar for that matter) is pretty amazing... i'll have to try and find a picute of a guitar i saw that had figuring that looked like a shot from the hubble

  3. What size are these out of interest? By chance do you have a pair of the indigo versions, are they really a big difference in texture?

biggest difference is the way they feel. indigo is soft and pliable, 9634 is one of the stiffest pairs i have ever worn, especially true to waist size. i'll try and post some macro shots of both tonight..

your pics just about convinced me to order these as a gift, one quick question, raw or one wash to start?

  5. RAKUTEN offers proxy services at a pretty reasonable rate, so if you're not opposed to spending a couple of dollars more for convenience you can now order sugarcane denim from just about every major shop in japan...

sorry we seem to be derailing the SC thread, this shit really belongs in the denim questions thread

  6. i was not so much referring to the descriptor "craftsmanship" as much as just the act of creation. watching a master work his trade always seemed a bit artistic to me, almost like watching a performance or watching an animal stalk prey.... maybe art, as with beauty, is truly in the eye of the beholder.... or at least thats what they tell you anyway..

  7. "Denim is about making money, not art. ..."

i would have to argue that this may be the worst quote of the day. this is exactly whats wrong over here these days.. lack of respect for the craftsman of days gone by...

mass produced denim that is sold in the walmarts of the world is not art, but take the "denim is art idea" and take a good long hard look at the Oni Shoai denim sometime and tell me its not artistic in nature...

art is in the craft, when a craft or trade is mastered, the craftsman becomes an artist, not only in his creation, but in the movements he makes to create it.

as for the original question, salaami put it pretty well i what i believe you were meaning ("painstakingly reproduced..."). artisanal needs quantification because there are an overwhelming number of different ways your question could be answered. maybe artisanal wasn't the word you were looking for..

  8. you can't say "you gotta buy vintage" or "you gotta buy new" or "you gotta buy (insert brand)" or any of that. try every guitar and just buy the one that feels comfortable, sounds nice, and is just fun to play. if there was a certain type of guitar that was undeniably better than all others, thats what everyone would play.

i'll kill two birds here... amen to this^^. for most players the effect laden tone of late, the new vs vintage tone is indistinguishable, and even to those with the trained ear is quite difficult to distinguish. i may be a minority but i believe tone comes from the hands that play, and have heard time and again a truly amazing player come in to a shop and grab a run of the mill guitar and craft sounds that would make you weep...

I'll go ahead and come to the defense of the notion that vintage/used offers an almost uniformly better option

here is the catch. made in america comes at such a high premium that it almost becomes unreachable by most of us. we need to get back to the days when craftsman in this country were appreciated. the majority of foreign made guitars seem to be of far inferior quality (and its not the country of origin, because some great originals have come from small batch companies in almost every country, its the manufacturer trying to pump them out assembly line fashion with no regard for quality and craftsmanship)

  9. ^^Good points from tmadd and MiniW. It's probably the recession. Most people want to spend money on something they really want. I agree, if its not a real departure from what's already available, then it shouldn't be a collab.

Here are some pics of my re-sole of my 1914 GT's. As usual, my man Okuyama-san working his magic.

really... redwings.... makes them almost bearable without that thin sole... pm me with some info for your cobbler if you could... or just post it up

  10. I wouldn't even think about buying a new guitar. I think new guitars are truly awful things. It's vintage all the way.

this makes me laugh.. lets all try this for a few years and see what the state of the industry is.....

    truly awful...
