  2. read a lot of stuff since the last time i posted to this thread, diaz aside. here's a list, they are all worth a read imo but i've bolded books i would recommend among them

  3. diaz - brief wondrous life of oscar wao

only 100 pages or so in but i like the narrator voice in this one. especially in some short stories, wallace's voice often sounded 'contemporary' to me. diaz as well here, except of course with a class and ethnic difference

  4. let me know if this works

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1D2FqakzQYyikIG2UucQOYvKCn8VdoXDVwjWribO7IjI/edit?usp=sharing

i think i made the doc public and everyone should be able to edit. i started adding links from the tumblr but gave up shortly because i'm currently posting from the local library, which blocks mediafire. cant tell if links are dead or not atm.

thanks all for the mixes so far. really digging a lot of stuff but especially les rallizes denudes, fushitsusha, broken water, STL, ai aso, john maus

  5. this mix is ALL over the place. transitions are often awkward. most of the songs are from 2014 albums ive enjoyed. technically the dexter johnson song is from 1969 but a label that specializes in senegalese music, teranga beat, produced a 2XLP from original tapes this year. i recommend giving the label's catalog a tour, high quality stuff.

ive sent a pm with a link to the mix, the SN and password to the tumblr to everyone that's replied so far. i also have NO IDEA how to make a post. if anyone can figure out or knows how, itd be nice to have a post with a link to everything anyone put together

  6. read a one-sentence synopsis of her in the local alternative rag and decided it was dumb. saw the billing and saw it was nominated for a fuck ton of awards and thought "it might be cool." watched and and have returned to square one and am currently astonished by how far the movie critically coasts on techno-novelty and brittle platitudes. and novelty is being generous. i know of at least one movie with a similar premise and could probably pile up others with 5 minutes of google. after hearing a couple choice lines ("the past is a story we tell ourselves") i looked up how old jonze was to see how long it took him to arrive at this particular stratum of self-delusion. 44 years. and the critics and enthusiastic audience this movie has, they are honestly wowed and moved by this 2-hour long film adaptation of the wrappers from bite-size chocolate dove bars? the technological questions raised by the movie aren't new, profound, nor deep. the writing glides on a pretense of human universality but is vanilla inside and out (read: white)

i am though i guess impressed with jonze, phoenix, and johannson for raising above the typical chaff what would have otherwise been an enormous flop. jonze stitches together an image of near future with probably limited resources, and phoenix does heavy lifting being in a close-up for nearly the entire film's running. i am going to stop here because there are far too many other great movies worth more of everyone's time and thought.

  7. what a spectacular show. unexpected combinations. daring prints and patterns, novel details (coffin zipper pulls, noose duffle coat loops--and am i wrong to think one of those duffle coats looks like a kimono?) and he further slouched his usual volume and drape with zippers across sweatshirts, down the back of jacket arms, etc.

i am also excited to see this from yohji, who is 70 years old and has been making clothes for 36 years. he is still challenging himself and the 'menswear scene' as well. bravo.

  8. ok. i put together a collection of tracks from 2013 i really like, got something in the works for later on: working on a dj-set sorta playlist, i want to try using software to mix it all together, maybe put a vocal track over some beats here and there. domdomdom, royalefatale, dum and others more experienced than me have already done something like this, kudos to their mixes they are great and i will reupload if the links are down.

in the mean time. pm for a link. track listing is in no particular order:

    young spirit - samsons groove

alan licht - four years later

    ghostpoet - them waters

craig taborn trio - in chant

    dean blunt - demon

vår - no one dances quite like my brothers

lust for youth - another day

pharmakon - crawling on bruised knees

    heterotic - slumber

julia holter - this is a true heart

    no joy - ignored pets

    grouper - towers

lil ugly mane ft ilwad awale - smokeclears

death grips - whatever i want (fuck who's watching)

    edit: typo

  9. http://www.ellenfullman.com/Fullman_lmj.pdf'>The instrument is acoustic. Wooden box resonators are mounted on a wall and twenty to thirty strings terminate into each resonator soundboard. Performers walk between pathways of strings suspended at waist-height. The instrument is played by “bowing†with rosined fingertips while walking. A uniquely designed brass capo on each wire changes the vibrating string length much as a capo on a guitar. Tuned in just intonation, the pitch range is determined by length: A4 (440 Hz, open A string on the violin) requires eight meters in length. Every octave lower requires a doubling of length. These enormous lengths are required when strings are excited in the longitudinal mode, or played by “bowing†lengthwise.

the fundamentals are so low they can't be heard by human ear. when she plays the instrument you are only hearing the overtones
