  1. it depends on your standards for sound quality.

My standards for audio gear are very high, I personally wouldn't be satisfied with the ER6i. Since you are considering getting the 6i again, the extra 100 or so dollars might not be worth it to you.

I haven't heard the HF2 or HF5 myself, but reviews and impressions I trust seem to indicate that neither are designed with the audiophile in mind, rather to suit the iphone or ipod respectively.

HF2 might be good for you since you did say it would mainly be for use with an iphone.

I think the ER4P is great, wouldn't trade it for another IEM except maybe the UE11, and even then the UE11 might not have treble detail to my taste.

If you are especially curious I do own the ER4P and live in new york, would be glad to let you try them out. Otherwise, I would say don't over think it and just get the ER6i again.

  2. ^get ER4P instead they are much better. Nothing else quite like the ER4, they are comparable even to some 500+ full size headphones.

and what happened to your current ER6i? Etymotic has great customer service by the way.

Chrono, for full size/not particularly portable get Grado SR60.

for smaller, would you consider the Sennheiser PX100? They fold up small and have good sound quality and construction for the price (around 50 USD).

  3. I am down for whatever

abandoned stuff sounds cool, I have only been to Staten Island a couple times. just dropping off a friend so I haven't been around.

perhaps non SI-ers could coordinate to share a cab there or something?

I am completely busy this weekend though

2000db please enjoy your visit to new york. we don't know each other really, and can't really give advice which you don't know already, but have fun regardless.

  5. I had the opportunity to see Murakami speak this past weekend.

What interested me most is that he doesn't seem to consider his work to be particularly artistic, instead he sees himself as just a guy telling stories, doing what he does.

He compared himself to a taxi driver at one point, saying he sees himself "as a guy just doing what he has to do." Craft of writing more than art of writing.

Also he said that when he writes he never/rarely has a destination in mind. That what he enjoys in writing, is seeing "what's next, what's next." "If you know the end, the fun is spoiled."

He will start writing with just an opening scene or image which he may have had in mind for weeks or months, then make things up from there.

He claims to never dream while sleeping, and that instead he does his dreaming while he writes, almost comparing it to lucid dreaming without ever actually using that term. he did say though that it is fun to be able to "stop, start, stop start."

He writes every day in the early morning, usually goes to sleep at 8 or 9pm and wakes at 3 or 4am. As he said, and I totally agree, there is something special about the hours or the early morning.

I love the way the light is during dawn and pre dawn hours, and if I really wanted I could see it all the time, yet instead every single day I and most other people sleep through it, dream through it. There is something in Murakami's writing which is dream like, simple and calm, I find it reassuring almost that he is writing his stories while I am sleeping.

Additionally, he said that he does read the english translations of his work and is very satisfied with them. Repeatedly questioned on this by the audience, each time he claimed the Japanese and English versions of his books are "basically the same" and couldn't seem to think of any even minor differences between the two.

    about his musical taste:

he has somewhat of a rotation. In the morning he listens to baroque music, while driving always rock (REM, Beck and Radiohead are a few artists he mentioned), and in the evenings always jazz.

And about his open ended writing style, not having a plan or destination in mind for a story, he compared knowing when he is done to making love. "Somehow you just know."

a puzzling thing about this is that he seemed to say it is a subtle, vague thing, that somehow you just sort of know when you are done writing/making love. When making love though, knowing you are done is not so subtle...

he concluded the talk with a couple anecdotes. One, "Life is good sometimes" about a fan who might love one of his books but dislike the recent ones, or vice versa.

    and his last line

    "Please buy my next book"

  6. who is choosing the next book?

I am OK with current deadline, but if it needs to be extended that is OK too. I don't want to establish precedent for Book Club losing dedication/seriousness and falling apart though... too late?

  7. what the hell

I was supposed to buy a ticket from someone on craigslist

but the person stood me up

Sadia Latifi I am expecting an EXTREMELY humble and apologetic email/phone call before I leave work this afternoon.

  8. Are people still reading Children of the Alley?

    have any thoughts to share?

I have been really busy recently, still haven't had a chance to find a copy. Hopefully this weekend I will get started on it though.

  9. low-end bass is one of the most damaging things for ears... and coupled with the fact that headphones (even surface ones) are not good for ears, to begin with... these headphones would be a bad idea.

I think what you mean is that loud volumes are bad for ears and cause hearing loss/damage. (correct me if you are referring to something else though, I might be misunderstanding you)

Headphones can be easy to misuse, particularly in loud environments.

But headphones at safe volumes are no more damaging than speakers at safe volume, live music at safe volume (though when does that happen...), etcetera.

In ear headphones like many of the products Ultimate Ears makes are arguably better and safer since they will isolate the user from surrounding noises, making perceived volume of music louder.

I don't know anyone with the super.fi 5s linked, but I do know a guy with the UE 10s and he says they are great. Good idea if you have the money and appreciate high fidelity audio gear.

I am pretty into audio gear, especially headphones by the way.. I feel obligated to defend UE here.

  10. I was sitting on a bench between Fort Point and Crissy Fields this afternoon (like a total bum by the way).

Eventually some guy comes up to me and asks how to get to the Golden Gate bridge on foot. I tell him.

I am thinking, "why is this guy walking to the golden gate bridge from here," then after a few minutes later I suddenly realize he might be going to commit suicide. I run to my (parent's) car and start driving toward the bridge, and find him walking only a couple hundred meters away.

So I drive him up to the bridge, and act really friendly and all hoping to restore any lost faith in humanity if he is that type of guy. He says he was just going to the bus stop in order to go home to Santa Rosa.

Ethan, buddy, we most likely will never see each other again, stay safe!

  11. Caps Lock, is that in NY?

I know if CA, at least the salaries of the teachers at the private high school I attended were lower than local public schools. Public schools have state regulated salaries while private schools pay whatever they want, sometimes lower and sometimes higher I guess.

I agree it is all about finding the right place to suit your teaching style. I know two teachers who say they love teaching in high crime, low income, low graduation rate schools even with stress and uncooperative/abusive students. They seem to be more ethically driven than some of the academia type teachers I knew had in high school.

I have done a lot of tutoring and really only enjoy teaching when I am working with an intelligent student who just needs me to subtly rephrase questions so that my student can use the knowledge and understanding he/she already has or when I feel I am becoming a better tutor.

  12. kunk your PM box is full.

and servo, how often are you changing blades? and how thick the board?

Forget about the money/environment or whatever you really have to change blades every 3-4 cuts or every 150 inches, whichever is sooner.

can't wait until grad school so I can use laser cutters for that stuff.

  13. dang, sewn by old women in Seattle. That pretty much settles it I will buy one.

Reminds me of those great pictures out there of young middle-class looking japanese people sewing jeans in the Momotaro factory.

Any comment on the double layer cruiser VS the single layer?

It looks like structured silhouette is lost on the double layer coat due to the 'cape,' but I like the charcoal offered on the double layer more than the green of the single layer cruiser.

  14. ^sure.

How do Filson coats fit? I am thinking of getting a tall size cruiser or double layer cruiser.

Are they goofy looking midwest hunter steez?

    I love their slogan though

"Might as well have the best"

  15. It feels like pretty much all the concerts I go to are bands I have seen before...

not sure if I like this or not.

xiu xiu tonight, these arms are snakes next week, seen XX twice before and TAAS 4 times before...

previous concerts were Ice Cube, Boris, Owen, Boris, Double Dagger, Vivian Girls, Danger..... seen them all 2+ times each.

but I do enjoy listening to the same CDs over the years. I like seeing new shows and listening to old CDs I guess.

These Arms Are Snakes show will rule though.
