  1. @Appleseed, not any entity. Just one! the gov.

Shippers are only executing what the gov. has laid upon them. If they don't then it's simple: they can't import the package.

There is just one to blame and that is the gov. That they charge insane amounts is another discussion.

I read many posts on SuFu (and coincidently 9 out of 10 from usa residents) that blame the shipper (or even more sad, the store they bought the item) while they can't do a damn thing about it. I just can't understand why there is still this urban myth flowing around that shippers are randomly charging packages with import duties. The customs officer makes up the bill, FedEx pays it for you so they can import your package, they deliver your package and kindly ask you to pay them back the amount which they paid to customs/gov.

I have found this not to be entirely true. I have to be very careful which carrier I use to ship to Canada. When I use UPS or Fedex I have been hit with the regular duties and taxes but also huge brokerage fees. If I ship with domestic postal services such as USPS or Royal Mail I have never once been charged any additional fees of any kind.

  2. Went for a nice long run this morning and pushed out my Sunday - Sunday kms for this week to 110, and just pushed over 300kms for march as well. i think its fair to say i am the fittest i have ever been.

Amazing Jack. I think I pulled up a distant second to you this month with 173 kms. None of us can catch you.

  3. Anyone have any experience with calf tension? I was doing a 10 k yesterday but half way through the muscle tensed so badly I had to walk the rest. Stretching helped a bit but it's still pretty bad.

I have this problem all the time. I make sure to do a bit of dynamic stretching of the calf before running which generally helps. One easy warm up is to stand with one leg forward and one leg back (in standard calf stretch position) - then slowly raise the back heel and then lower it again pushing it flat against the ground. Repeat at least 10 times then switch. That is usually enough to get my calves warmed up.

You can always use a foam roller between runs to work out any knots or tensions in the calf muscles which will help when you go to run.

EDIT: this is assuming you just need a quick warm up - if the problem persists or if you have pain you could have a strain or tear in which case stretching is not the best course of action. You should definitely ice after runs when you have pains such as this.

Also, there are two muscles in the calf - the Gastrocnemius and the Soleus - the stretch you do depends on where the tightness is that you are experiencing.

  4. also just wear them around for a few days

This will help but doesn't prepare your foot for the new shoe in the same way that a run on the streets does. It also doesn't break in the shoe for running like running does.

One other thing is I track the distance I put on my shoes to gauge where they are in their lifespan and to make sure I start getting the next pair ready before injury starts to occur. Randomly walking about in them throws of that measurement.

  5. I got new shoes. Is it true I should only do a light run to break em' in?

It is good to have a period where you alternate between your old shoes and your new - maybe take them out for a 4-5km run then do longer runs in your old shoes until your feet have gotten used to the new ones.

  6. i need to do more hill work. i used to be a real strong climber but haven't run in the hills in a while. i did a couple hilly runs on some dirt trails this week and felt like total shit going up.

As part of my program I have been doing hill repeats once a week which entail running at least a half kilometer uphill as hard as you can (until almost throwing up) then light jog down - then repeat 6 times. There is actually a prize for the first person to vomit.

We have also done reverse hill repeats where we run light uphill then as hard as we can downhill which was almost as bad but in a different way. You should try it sometime :)

I have really noticed a difference in general power on hills now.

    Are you from here Ordo?

    I am in North Vancouver

  7. Hey guys any tips for sore neck and shoulders when running? I stretch pre and post run and have been trying to relax my shoulders during but can't help but feel tight and sore at times. Any specific or deeper stretches I can try? Thought the yoga would help but no such luck.

I have been struggling with this as well - in fact I am off to the chiro/physio/kinesiologist in a few hours. It has gotten to the point where I am not able to sleep from the pain of bicep tendinitis. The problem is I had some ribs out which meant my shoulder was not sitting properly which in turn meant other muscles and tendons tightening to bring the shoulder back into place and pull my shoulder forward. A number of my stretches (such as reaching across my body and pulling the elbow towards my face) made the problem worse as I needed to pull my shoulder back not forward. Anyway, all that to say, even with good form, if your body is out of alignment you as still going to have problems.

I'm going to be spending time up there this summer. If any of you have suggestions on great trails I'd appreciate it.

I spend quite a bit of time running the various trails in Lynn Canyon and the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve. Here is a PDF map of the Reserve trails which gives a good overview of the area. When the time gets closer I can suggest some good routes depending on how far you want to go and how technical a run you want to do.

  8. so he deleted all his posts? or did the mods clean after him?

Tyson will sadly no longer be joining us. We took the extraordinary step of deleting his content due to a drop in actual content (there was some there for a time) and a marked rise in trollishness. Shed not a tear, I am sure he will attempt a return should he manage to find another IP somewhere.

  9. Please keep sales posts in the Market. Alternately, ppl could contribute something to this thread and add their sales threads to their signatures and anyone interested would check them out.

    (Hint hint)

  10. What is this peptalk feature you speak of? Its not like that embarrassing nike+ thing where at the end of your run you get paula radcliffe going "give yourself a big well done because you were great out there". Urgh. Spare me.

Peptalk is very useful for encouraging runners around the world with warnings about the dangers of various marsupials, updates on the amount of doughnuts one may currently be eating and the genius of Rolf Harris.

Oh and for Jack, apparently i just have inflammation, had 5 mins of tissue massage, 5 mins of some laser and 20 mins of some electro magnet. 40 euros. Interestingly he said dotn apply heat, stick with ice and stretches.

It isn't surprising that you should ice your injuries. I have fought through injuries through my time running and my doctor has told me the vast majority of injuries should be treated by icing. It is very rare that you should apply heat - especially in the case of inflammation - heating only makes it worse.

  11. I may have to try actually running using Endo one of these days just to try the Peptalk feature.

Does one have to go to the Premium account to track interval training? It seems like all the apps care about is pace which is misleading in many of the runs we do. Pace is not everything.
