  1. Nice man! Did they brew a new batch of Mean Old Tom for this winter?

youkinorn and I cracked JP La Roja as well as 2010 and 2010 La Folies tonight. 2010 had some weird ketchup thing going on.. not as bad as the 100% Brett Autumn Maple (which tastes like tomato soup) but was definitely noticeable. 2011 was good though.

Yeah. It doesnt have batch #s like before, but date of 11.10.11 is stamped on the label. Mean Old Tom sold out in a matter of few hours -- I was one of the last few ppl to snag one when I was in the store. Excited to try it. Don't think I'll age it. btw how do you age your beer? Room temperature or in the fridge?

  2. Flaming-Lips-24hr-skull.jpg

Easily the most impressive release I've ever seen from a band, possibly most impressive item I've ever seen. The Flaming Lips recorded a 24 hour song (!!!) and the ONLY physical copies are 13 ACTUAL human skulls (!!!!) with a dripping of chrome, which contain a USB drive that contains the song. Totally insane, over the top, and truly special. If you have $5,000 laying around, buy one. There's only 9 left.

    f u assjole.

  3. you should walk/occupy boston on dewey square and enhance that feeling. sufu may be so far from denouncing capitalism and excessive spending (because I'm very much guilty of that) but the energy and momentum right now is very refreshing X inspiring.

  4. If you're into street wear and sneakers (and I think they have some acronym and other weatherproof gear), Bodega is on Clearway St a couple blocks from the main Berklee building off Mass ave. Literally looks like a bodega, but behind the snapple machine is the store. It's novelty.

You can't drink yet if you're starting undergrad. Boston is strict with IDs most places except fine dining restaurants and Chinatown. And I assume you're poor as well if you're like most students. But if you're able to make it work, Bukowski's across the Backbay fire station and the Other Side at the end of Newbury st. have good beer selection (both are steps away from Berklee). In Allston, Deep Ellum has really tasty food and great beer selection as well (slightly more expensive for Allston standards but reasonable). Model and Silhouette gets saturated with hipsters on most nights. Allston has a variety of ethnic foods as well: Le's for pho, Color for cheap Korean food, camino real for Colombian, and Pikaichi (new) for ramen. Great Scott is a tiny venue but books some amazing shows -- I've seen obscure bands and up-and-coming "buzz" bands in this intimate space.

Denton is right -- Berklee is in a great location in Backbay, and Allston is a clusterfuck of culture w/ hipsters, frat boys, gutter punks, hypebeast-types, Brazilians, and plenty of cwgs from all over the country and world (thanks to BU). There's a myriad of collective houses/shows in Allston -- some great, some not so great.

I didn't know any cool shit when I was starting undergrad, so I encourage you to explore yourself. Psychogeography style with friends and a six-pack...

  5. Hello! Coming over to Boston from the bay area for school! Just thought I'd sorta revive this thread :) What's goood in this city?

Here for grad school? Or undergrad? Which school and area are you living in? These things tailor my response to your cheap question "what's good?"

  6. Didn't see a san diego thread and figured more than a few of you live in the area. I'll be there this wknd so it's not a long stay, but would like some recommendations. I suspect Mexican is next level compared to Boston and beaches are beautiful, but I'd like to know beyond that. What I've seen mentioned are areas Gaslamp, Hillcrest, and Northside.

Places to eat, drink, shops, music, where the kids hang out. The obvious and more obscure, both appreciated.

  7. will be in San Diego for work this weekend. i get the sense that con tickets may be difficult to obtain, but id love to find out some cool things to do in the area Thurs-Sat. doesn't seem to be a san diego general thread in jetset...
