  1. No, there is a definition and there is shit ppl make up. Digital sensors stabilize light? What cameras are you talking of? Take a photo with an slr and a digital slr with the same settings and same lense and see for yourself.

we can argue about this, but i don't really want to; the fact of the matter is that digital sensors do not read light the same way that negatives do. as such, it would be impossible to take a photograph with an analog camera and a digital one on "the same settings." that's just a foolish statement. DSLRs cannot duplicate the organic quality of light in the same way, and you can argue with me about it but you won't change my mind. digital sensors remove much of the fluidity of light, and organize it in bizarre ways. the best example is to look at a digital photo taken straight-on at the light source closed down to f16 or higher--you'll usually see a strange ringlet of haze/aura, which imo is really very ugly.

i understand that bokeh has a lot to do with the camera's lens, but i'm not just talking about how quickly the focus falls off. i'm talking about how the spiraling of the light's rays is captured on the sensitive film, and with a digital sensor, because the capture is so carefully controlled, that spiraling is minimized. with analog, that spiraling can often be emphasized by the lens to give a nice effect.

i'm also sure you could find some article somewhere that completely contradicts everything i've said, but these are things that i've noticed after shooting with both analog and digital for quite some time, and you can't really argue with personal experience.

  2. sorry but it seems like you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about? maybe you should look into the topic a bit?

well some people have different definitions for bokeh. technically, it's the quality of the swirling effect in what falls above or behind the plane of focus. it's best seen in Leica lenses, especially the 50:1. because digital camera sensors stabilize the light so drastically you pretty much can never get really great bokeh. the focus will still be smooth in and out of the plane, but it only gets fuzzy, not really swirled.

maybe you think differently, but that's been my experience.

  3. I just got the EF 28mm f/1.8 USM I ordered, seems great so far. reason I got the 28mm was that I felt a 50mm prime would be too much for a DSLR for everyday use. heres a couple of very random snaps (both at f/1.8 to test the bokeh):

not to rain on your parade but the bokeh on that lens is terrible. digital cameras have barely any, ever, i find, which is disappointing i guess but only if you shoot digital.

    (i shoot analog)

  4. i went to that justice show at hiro ballroom, and the presets or whatever fucking suck. justice, on the other hand, seemed like they had actually been to a dance party. the presets were like, shitty disco played on the wrong speed setting on the turntable with a drumset for looks. the best part of their set was the drummer's planet earth tee shirt, and that shit was average too.

i heard the house DJ was the best performance of the night

  5. i bought one of their button-front white shirts recently...the first time i put it on 2 of the buttons fell off. they obviously gave me store credit, but i was a little put off (and there were no more in my size). there's nothing else that really gets me that interested, I guess the coats are well-designed but the fabric is very cheap and they are not worth the $500 they are priced at, in my opinion. Also the trousers aren't tailored well enough to fetch $200.

  6. the best way (and only way you should, if you want to avoid the Nylon/Paper/Vice anti-aesthetic that's so popular nowadays) to use flash is to bounce it, either off the ceiling of a nearby wall.

you can also use a synch cord and hold the flash away from the camera, so it looks a little more dynamic.

  7. i have a pair of Levis that are 29x42 (i had a thread on here about them but now I can't find it), i bought them with unfinished hems (the tag says they're 29x36) and then just hemmed them myself at 42 inches. they stack great and i love them.

  8. i was there before gang gang played. got there during the soundcheck but had to meet a lady in the city afterwards. how was gang gang dance?

we were the dudes in the coatcheck who ordered burritos.

did you go to fun on friday? rapture was interesting. they did an electronic set of a few songs followed up by dj gig. definitelly nice to see a big band like that in brooklyn.

gang gang dance was fucking great...i think they played a little too much/long, though. but really, really great. the only other stuff i'd heard was from their myspace and i have to say they are 1000 times better live.

and no, i couldnt go to see the rapture, although i wish i could have.

what im really looking forward to is optimo on friday, and hopefully i can get to Galapagos the night before to see DtL and dandi wind...do you always work the studio b parties?

  9. its cool that you guys are all arguing about who knows more about whats hyphy......

anyways, somebody mentioned bonde do role a bit back. they're amazing. the baile funk thats coming out of Rio right now is preetttyyyy incredible. I think it's the best stuff being recorded at the moment. I got into it through Diplo, etc.

also, Diplo and Bonde do Role are doing the FUN party on March 30. I think Devro will be there too, maybe Aaron LaCrate, plus the Bangers et al.

it's really not to be missed...Diplo's last show for a long while (so he says)

also: the fluokids mp3s don't expire because they host them, they don't do sendspace or ysi etc. so, buddy, don't worry about people knowing about fluokids. and honestly, you think that this forum's thread is gonna suddenly overwhelm their website or something?

also: she hasn't been mentioned yet, so...anybody like Uffie? I think she's great.

finally: saw Eystek and Gang Gang Dance at Studio B last night. Not exactly what I was expecting (I was hoping to dance...although Alexxxchange DJed afterwards) but still pretty incredible.

  10. a few things:

i think its true that the label is beginning to understand its ability to trick guys with 36 waists to wear the jeans that look horrible on them. But I don't think the cut has changed all that drastically, except for the pants being a bit fuller--Hedi's just layering the models more this season than he has in the pants, when it's usually been a single white button-front and a leather jacket, etc.

also, I thought the shoes were awful, the pants looked poorly made, the Pollock-style blazers look absurd, but I really thought some of the simpler and more classic jackets were fantastic.

    nothing that amazing, however.
