  3. I picked up a Post shirt off ebay a year or two ago for something like $5.00. I was so excited to get it for so little. It was an XL and that thing was HUGE. It was a cool shirt but sized more like a XXXL. Make sure you get measurements....just saying.

I had to pass it on.

  6. Great thread people.

About the packaging of the Russells: I wouldn't mind that box either.

On the contrary: I tend to like it better than yet another exercise in expensive branding. We are constantly being bombarded with marketing and packaging bogus that distracts from the products themselves. Not here. To me, that plain box says "no bells and whistles, these boots speak for themselves".

Agree with the packaging. I'd rather them put the money into the boots personally.

One of my favorite old shops used to wrap up your purchase in brown kraft paper and tie it with twine. That was one of the best parts about shopping there.

  7. I had a pair of Filson Uplander boots that were hard to get my foot in and out of...even totally unlaced....they had a pretty soft leather lining and eventually I wore through that while getting in and out of them...Just a heads up. Not sure if the Russells are lined in such a manner or not.

At any rate...congrat. Classic boots...nice review. I'm jealous.

  8. Not so much boots but in the same aesthetic/ outdoor style. Lots of info about vintage mountaineering/backpacking labels and some interesting pictures too.

    Frostline-opti-Kit-complete.jpg

Thanks for posting this! I had a down vest my dad sewed back in the day from a kit...brings back some memories! He also put together a Randall knife from a kit they used to sell...and built his own stereo...a Heathkit I think it was. Damn engineers!

On another note: I picked up a book this weekend at the library called "High on the Wild" about Hemingway's time spent in Idaho. There are lots of really cool photos of him and others wearing some classic gear. Selvage jeans with up turned cuffs, Bean duck boots, mocs...ect. You guys might find it interesting.

Kind of seems a shame to wear out a good pair of Limmer boots walking around town...I'm sure some serious hiker would beat you with their sierra cup. They are classics though. I think the NOLS book mentions them...or at least one of the past editions did....maybe it was "Freedom of the Hills". It's been a while.

  9. I have a XL Patagonia Trench Coat I would like to sell. It's from 1990 or 1991 and I purchased it new. It has been worn just a few times and stored. It's in great shape with a detachable hood. It is oversized as you would expect from a trench coat. I'd like to get $100 for it...I'll cover shipping to the CONUS. I will try and get pics and measurements up in the next couple of days.

    PM me if you're interested.

  10. Nice man!

Do you know anything about caring for them? Is spray on stuff ok for them?

It rained the first day I wore mine. The rain beaded up like a wax job on a car. I'm not going to do anything with mine except wear the hell out of them.

I'm not a big fan of the spray on stuff except maybe for suede. Once they get some wear on them I might treat them with some Sno-Seal or something similar. But for now I think they are good to go out of the bag (Mine didn't come in a box?).

  11. That's really damn cool

    He's a legend

What you doin on sufu? aha

Quoddies came today, will post pics tommorow or whenever i get the chance, wouldn't normally post pics but someone asked for em

Dig the denim, classic American workwear, music, ect...

And there is the occasional good tip on here. I just got a pair of Quoddys in the mail on Tuesday!

  12. I have a older friend that was in the Green Berets and later in the CIA that was stationed in Guatemala during the 60's. One day he brought in this awesome old photo of himself that was taken during that time.

He was wearing a pair of jeans, denim jacket with no shirt on underneath, a smokey the bear hat, a leather bandolier across his chest full of rounds and carrying a 30-40 Krag. The 30-40 Krag was used during the Spanish-American War but he really liked it for whatever reason. He was and still is a total badass! I haven't seen him in a few years but maybe I can get a copy of the photo to post. It's killer...

  13. I’d like to try and sell this as a set before I bust it up and list it on ebay.

The Jacket: 1962 Type N3B Jacket, Flying Men’s’ Nylon Twill Size XL

This one was made by the Southern Athletic Co., Inc

    The DSA number is DSA-1-418-C-62

It has the Air Force stencil (nice and bright) on the left arm. It has the real coyote/wolf fur collar in excellent shape. Overall the jacket is in great condition. It does have some issued wabi you would expect from a 40+ year old jacket. There is virtually no fading on the jacket. On both the left and right chest there is the name “Nichols†written in dark marker that blends in pretty well with the jacket. Unless the jacket is completely zipped you can’t see the name. Apparently this is pretty common among issues jackets and adds to the character and wabi of the jacket. Comar zips throughout.

The Gloves/Mittens: Shell Glove Aircrew Mitten Type N-4B Size Large

These are made by the Aviators Clothing Co.

    Mil-G-6269B

The mittens are in great shape. The leather palms are in awesome condition. The acrylic fur on the backs of the gloves are also in great condition. They are complete with the wool liners. Both the liners and over-mitts carry the Air Force stencil.

I’m not real sure of the date on these mittens but I would guess early 60’s.

The Hat: 1964 Helmet, Flying, Winter Type B-9B Size Medium

    DSA-1-3204-64-C

Made by the Martin Lane Co.

The hat is also in great shape. The acrylic fur is awesome. No fading on the hat. Complete with chinstrap.

Again…I’d like to try and sell this as a set. The mittens look awesome tied to the drawstrings on the jacket. If you are going for the “Ice Station Zebra†or “The Thing†look then you need this jacket. Buzz Rickson’s sells a like version of this jacket for $945 or so. I’m asking $350 for this original set. Shipping to the US is included. Shipping outside the US will be at cost. Paypal Please.

Note: I should be able to get up some pics in the next couple of days. My camera is on the lame and I should be able to shoot some photos with a friend’s camera this evening.

  14. hell yeah. Sounds like you got more than a couple years on me. I wasn't buying Patagonia Fleeces as a three year old...hahaha. But when you dig through the parents house, post some flics. Always love to look at that old stuff. As I may have mentioned earlier in this thread, my pops was an avid climber (half dome, El Cap, etc...) and remembers buying Pitons and the like from Chinarrd (Sp?) pre-patagonia, as well as the first North Face shop in Berkely (I think?)

    Good stuff.

Will do. Visiting the folks over Thanksgiving so I need to grab some of that old stuff. I have a few chouinard biners as well. Actually met Yvon when he dropped by the fly fishing shop back in the early 90's. Damn...I'm getting old!

  15. You know you're old when you have Patagonia fleece jackets from the 80's. I remember buying one (that I still wear) back in '86 or so. I also have a pair of Danner Mountain Lights from back in the day...I think I'm on my third set of soles.

I worked at a fly fishing shop through college and at one time Patagonia had an employee purchase program that you were able to buy season close-outs for next to nothing. This was probably in 1990. I bought so much stuff...hooked up everyone! No telling what some of that might sell for on ebay. Certainly more than I paid for it back then. I need to dig through my parents house and find some of that gear. I know there are a couple of anoraks and fleeces hanging around. I wanted one of those sheepy looking fleece jackets so bad but they were out of my size in the close-outs so I got my gf one that was red. Sweet jackets! I still have some of the capilene from back then that I still wear. Some of the lightweight and expedition weight stuff that piles up so badly. Stuff last forever.

BTW...Filson makes a pretty sick looking pair of upland boots that are a bit cheaper than the Russell's. But I swear...those Danner Moutain Lights of mine are total classics and last forever.
