  1. Thanks for the comments... a lot of the envisoned $250 USD price point @ ~100 - 150 pieces comes through personal relations (factory/material sourcing). But additionally, if you go direct and cut out the wholesale model much like how dismalfuture & TOJ, Outlier etc has done, it makes it more realistic.

GORE-TEX won't be an option to start since as many know it's a material that requires a lot of testing (for the final product) and having an account. I spoke to a friend @ GORE EU, it's unrealistic that they'll be issuing any new accounts for such a small project since they don't have the manpower to ensure the quality is on point.

But that's not to say there aren't a lot of options out there outside of GORE. It would be nice to have an instantly recognizable name like GORE to have people pay attention (even if it's not necessarily the absolute best material for the actual piece), but I'm confident there are lots of options to play around with involving PERTEX and TORAY etc.

I'm waiting for LCDs to become a reality, imagine if you have a sleeve mounted LCD that is attached via Bluetooth to your phone, then you can check basic (and hopefully increasingly complex) functions without ever needing to whip out your phone.

  2. I was tossing around the idea of putting together some high-quality (don't we all?) waterproof breathable shells that operate somewhere in between your traditional performance purveyors (like your Arc'teryxs/The North Face/Patagonia/Mammut etc) and of course your more fashion driven lines (Acronym, White Mountaineering, visvim etc). There doesn't seem to be a lot of options out there for people who simply want something with considered functionality that don't go hiking and climbing on the weekends. What sort of features would you want to see?

    For me personally:

-something that would make it easier to carry a micro 4/3rds and larger camera within the shell

    -easy access to transit pass/notebooks/pens

-more tailored fit but while trying to ensure proper movement when needed (this is obviously though as not all waterproof breathables have stretch)

-fit is a big issue for sure

-hoods vs. removable hoods vs. no hoods, tough to figure out since in a more stylistic setting, a hood defeats the purpose but then again it's necessary on a functional level.

-thumbholes in the sleeves? I like the added understated functionality

-weight? Something super lightweight or something that's the norm?

    -price <$250 USD

The price seems low, but if you're able to go direct, it shouldn't be that big of an issue.

  3. Convince him that a logo is timeless and one of the most important parts of a brand.

Conveying everything your company means in a simple visual is fucking hard and he should realize that. You shouldn't skimp on it. Yehj you hear stories of Nike paying a few hundred bucks for a logo but looking back I'm sure they would be willing to pay much much more.

I have a start-up running shoe brand and we dropped $1,000 USD but even then, that was a homie price from somebody really good.

  4. I am wondering how good are the shoes for running? I mean aesthetics aside cus I am really gonna run in them

If that's the case, just buy the in-house colorways of the shoe and make it much easier on yourself to acquire.

If you're a heel striker, "technically" all but the Free should be ok... but the way science is going, nobody really knows how good are bad running shoes and their various designs are.

If you're a midfoot/forefoot striker and have been for some time, I would look beyond the Free.

  5. i went to fil wan chai. this place is in the middle of fucking nowhere. there's a monocle store nearby but the place is pretty hard to find.

It's a stones throw from an MTR exit...? Kapok/Monocle, a few upcoming cafes, the place will be bumping in the next few years.

Chai Wan would be the middle of nowhere.

  6. I have a Voigtlander 35mm f/1.4 on my NEX-5 but I would maybe even go for a 15 or 21 mm Voigtlander. The focal length + appropriate focusing distance means you don't really need to worry when walking around in day time, just snap away.

  7. anybody know if there is gong to be a drop of new items at f.i.l coming next week ?

in japan for the week, would like to pick up some visvim x sophnet mocca's

New drops ALMOST every week except between seasons.

  8. I never said the Free concept was bullshit, maybe it was miscommunicated. Free hasn't gone any further than 3.0 (1 = barefoot, 10 = Air Max 20XX).

The "Free" concept is on its way to the proper way of running cause it allows you strike in the midfoot/forefoot a lot easier. But there is still a lot of work the Free could do. If they shaved down the thickness of the outsole that would help out a lot. The sipes/cuts that allow for flexibility are exactly what the foot wants and needs when running.

What I'm saying is that a that traditional running shoes and their "corrective" technologies are really just a band-aid solution. They don't really address the root of the problem and may promote poor running technique.

When Nike started the running boom, notice how the Air unit was only in the heel, meaning it was some how appropriate to use your heel as a shock absorber.

I can't say I can throw out complex scientific words but I understand the fundamental aspect of why more barefoot-styled running > thick cushioned footwear (like Lunarfoam toolings).

Look at the images on the right side. Heel striking isn't ideal but of course you can still run that way.

  9. There are definitely options out there (Vibram 5 Fingers, Terra Evo, New Balance has new styles out this season) but Nike has the means to create a "better" shoe but will they go that route? Like I said the marketing machine has to basically re-invent the wheel and some how sell the shoe.

If you're going to make a performance orientated product and (as a brand like UC) have traditionally not cut corners and made authentic/true product, I think you're doing yourself a slight disservice. It's a weird topic for a fashion brand to do performance and to do it cutting edge since it's more of an extension of one's interests rather than trying to push the boundaries of performance I guess.

But to end it all, I think Takahashi is a heel striker. Maybe he gets away fine with it, but if you're of any substantial mass, you're taking a huge beating on your joints. As well cushioning prevents you from self-checking injuries. If you run with minimalist cushioning you can feel pain as it happens more so than when your sensory feedback is muted. As well since your body doesn't feel the same level of impact, it actually decreases shock-reducing behavior aka more force.

If you're interested in the topic there's a growing trend towards minimalist running shoes that lose the "Air", lose the "Lunarfoam", and Nike's own people have questioned the super supportive and corrective midsoles we see on all the footwear now.

Just like the FDA instituted a food period that is quickly being proven wrong, same goes towards supportive running shoes with massive midsoles.
