  1. fyi, moscot doesn't accept vsp on their store frames... so if you thought you were going to cop them for like 20 bucks, no such luck.

I haven't looked into it yet, but I think Grand Central Opticians takes VSP. though their stuff is a little more high end, it may have the "nicer" stuff you're looking for. The only frames that I was into at Moscot were a pair of name brand frames that were pretty pricey, so I thought that I'd just look elsewhere instead.

  2. The best trees for C & J shoes are C & J trees. Lime wood I believe, lighter, more porous and less abrasive than cedar. You can get them here at C & J in NYC, call Cindy at Turnbull and Asser at 212-752-5700. They make two forms I believe. One for the 337 last and one generic last. But they cost $100. I have seen cedar trees branded C& J on the internet.

But any trees are better than none! I have a few cedar trees for like $25 from my shoe shine guys. Alden's are like $30, etc., and the Internet has tons.

Thanks for the advice! I will probably cheap out and get a pair of cedar trees. Good to know that I can just use regular shoe trees on them. I will have to stop by T&A (heh) to see what other goodies they have to offer).

I'm waiting for the perfect set of weather conditions to wear them out for the first time...

  3. woo hoo!

Picked up a pair of C&J "Helstons" at the Barney's Warehouse Sale. The insole has a cobranded stamp (i.e. C&J for Barney's).

I haven't really seen them sold anywhere else online so I feel extra double special :) Pics when I get the chance...

This being my first pair of nice leather boots, I was wondering what type of shoe trees you guys use in your boots? Are there special ones for them? The Helstons are about 6 inches high or so (pretty much the same height as most of the boots on here). Can I just use regular shoe trees on them? Also, where can I get a good pair of waxed cotton laces for boots in the NYC area? I work near the Alden store on Madison... do they sell them there (didn't have a chance to look in this morning)

  4. Smith has written a book in a while since those runs. There was a lot of hype around him at the time, because suppposedly he was going to do "comics for the fans, by the fans". I just read Guardian Devil the other day and it's GARBAGE compared to Bendis/Maleev Daredevil.

Incidentally, Bendis/Maleev's Daredevil is a great place to pick up comics if you've been out of the game for a while. It's sort of revolutionized how comics are being wirtten today (well, Marvel ones, anyway). I really want to get into Brubaker's Captain America as well, which is supposed to be excellent.

  5. ^ Indigo Master: The Revenge?

Just got mine from Kinokunya (3 week order). Everyone's wearing regular jeans. No slims. Makes me wonder about some of the denim choices I've made lately, and the ones I'm going to make in the future.

Another thing I noticed is that a lot of these people hade been wearing their jeans for 3-5 years(!) Most people on here blow through their jeans in one year and declare them "done"... imagine if more people took the time out to really watch their jeans grow instead beating the living bejesus out of them...

Also, it gives hope to office jockeys like me :D maybe if I'm patient enough the jeans that I have will turn out as nice as theirs... The FH's were very well represented throught the magazine. A huge gallery of Evisu in the middle that is intimidating to say the least... and (finally!) some worn in pics of DD's... I think I'll be very happy with my 1920's in the future. Eternals look great as always, but hardly saw anypeople wearing them on the street

  6. I think that a lot of people are influenced by the legal definitions of what is a counterfeit and what isn't. For example, in fashion: a person can deconstruct a garment, copy the pattern, mass produce it and sell it without being called a "counterfeit". But the second he slaps on some sort of branding on there, it is.

Now, that's sort of an oversimplification, especially since the fabric and construction figures just as much as the pattern does into a garment's uniqueness.

What makes it "okay" to own a print or a poster of a painting and not a reproduction that A) you know is not an original and B) is not being marketed as an original?

  7. A lot of repro defenders on the board have said that although repros can be seen as "counterfeits", repros are more like romantic, nostalgic reproductions of the original jeans. Companies like Sugarcane make jeans that, some argue, are "more authentic" than Levi's own reproductions.

A friend sent this to me and I immediately thought of repros.

What would be the difference between owning one of these paintings and owning a pair of repros, I wonder? Share your thoughts...

  8. i guess its just the cut, because its not like they are tight on my legs. my sams are tighter, and never restricted my movement like that

I'd have to agree. The crotch is cut a little longer than I would have expected, which restricts some leg movement for me. I don't mind too much since I'm not terribly active, but I could see this being a problem for, say, a mountain climber.

mine are still quite fuzzy, which is a nice contrast to some of my more worn pairs. How bout everybody else? still fuzzy?

  9. that laugh is pretty good... I still hear a lot of Nicholson joker in there, though. He carries himself really well, though.

The way they're settin ghim up as Batman's big bad in this movie is the right way to play it, I think. A lot of the viral stuff has been hinting at the idea that Gotham City is at war, at the mercy of the (terrorist) clowns. That's a far scarier Joker than the one we have in the comic books: violence for the sake of "fun".

Now that I think about it, it's sort of similar to the way that the Mutants were portray in Dark Knight Returns...

I'm still curious to see how they're going to fit Two Face in. I was pretty satisfied with the way they did Ra's and Scarecrow in the first ( I was even shocked by the reveal, even though the visual clues were there all along... well played, Nolan :) )
