  1. thanks guys.

the mapion.jp site looks good, now I just have to learn japanese. :[

so in other words if I want to find out the address of a store in Tokyo I should just rely on the superfuture maps as a general guide. ;]

how do most locals navigate the city, is it all sort of word of mouth?

  2. Hey all,

Was wondering if anyone new how to figure out how to find an address in Tokyo. Like I understand that the city is divided into districts, then in each district its a another division... Like 2-3-9 AzabuJuban, Minato-Ku... But I'm wondering does anyone know of a website that can locate addresses in Tokyo, or is it a lost cause? Google Maps sort of shows it I think, but then again I don't read or speak Japanese...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  3. The AA is a good school, or at least according to several of my professors who are alumni. The idea for the pictures combined as a self portrait sounds interesting. You should post a picture of it when you finish. I'd be interested to see how it turns out.

What is it with the Harvard GSD link? This is like the fifth time this week it has crossed my way. Nice link though.

  4. Where are you looking to study architecture at, any particular school? You are going for a Masters degree I assume? As far as the portfolio, pick projects or things you have done that reflect a wide variety of interests and abilities. Not just strictly drawings of buildings, sketches, computer renderings etc... A good thing to include is creative writing, photography, artwork, web stuff if you do it, graphic design, etc...

I'm finishing up a five year Bachelors of Architecture, to skip the need for Masters school, but I know a lot of Masters students. Architecture is definitely a rewarding path to study. It's a lot of work, but trust me you will enjoy it.

I second bicurious' suggestion, please post pics. I'd be more than willing to share my oppinion with you.

  5. I say stick with Brooklyn, unless you are planning on making 6 figures a year. And in that case have fun wasting 2000 a month on a 1 bedroom in soho.

I agree, Williamsburg and Dyke [Park] Slope are both nice places to live. You won't get easily bored there. I'd also look at some less established areas where rents are drastically cheeper too.

Greenpoint > It's just north of Williamsburg. It's on the G Line so it's a bit of a hassle to get to from Manhattan, but it's a decent area and relatively cheap.

Fort Greene > It's the area around Pratt. If you're younger than it's fun.

Eastern Williamsburg > It's the part of Williamsburg off of Metropolitan and Grand Avenues east of the BQE. It's a bit sketchy in some places, cause it's just north of Bed Stuy and Bushwick [the ghetto]. But this is where a lot of new restaurants and bars have been opening lately. It's off the L Train, second or third stop into Brooklyn. And it's a whole lot cheaper than living in Williamsburg itself.

I have been thinking of starting my own web site lately.

    I had a few questions?

Meditation have you used Dream Host? Are they any good, the deal sounds almost too good to be true. I wonder what the catch is?

Tragic Bliss, media temple seems really expensive compared to other options, do you think the added price is worth it? like do they give you extra customer support, etc...

Any one else know about any other web hosting services?

Like what do all of you on here with websites use?

    DontCareforCrap,

Please cite where you lift stuff next time. I had my hopes up there that maybe you had written this, and while I may disagree with it's content in many ways; I was going to commend you on at least attempting to "write" something. ..but nevermind.

    yeah, I do have issues.

I'm going to add Ashlee Simpson to my list of celebrities I'd like to see fall off the back of a truck.

    And Mark Wahlberg,

And Celine Dion and her husband,

And everyone else who I could swear is dead until I see their nip tucked faces on the National Enquirer ::

    [including but not limited to]

    Charleton Heston

    Liz Taylor

    Elton John

    Paul McCartney

    Prince

And last but not least, Leonardo DiCaprio.

Courtney Love :: because she killed Kurt Cobain.

Mel Gibson :: I think you know why.

Rem Koolhaas :: cause he is so over. I saw him speak two years ago and I swear half the audience was put to sleep by his incessant monotone drone. I'm sorry to say this but, bald European men just aren't that interesting.

Bill Maher :: I honestly don't care anymore.

Other people that annoy me >

People who still drive low rider trucks.

People who think that being gay makes them interesting.

People who still take money from their parents after they've turned 22, get a job.

People who join the army and then expect me to cry about their sacrifice.

People who think that the Six Feet Under finale on HBO was quality television.

People who think that the internet is useful for things other than porn.

People who drive suv's and then complain that gas is $3 + dollars a gallon.

People who vacation in New York.

    People who drink lite beer.

People who drink lite alcohol of any kind.

People who say Yeager tastes like listerine.

People who think it's ok to drink and drive, take a bus.

People who read Stephen King novels as serious works of fiction.

People who urinate in the pool.

People who hog the elipitical bike at the gym because they think it makes them look "proggressive".

    People who eat Veal.

People who refuse to eat sushi.

People who think that Chinese takeout is ethnic food.

    People who hate Shakira.

People who insist on carrying nextel phones and turning the volume on the walkie talkie as loud as it will go and continue to have inane conversations comprised solely of the words yo and holla.

Every other Friday [paycheck day] I'll buy maybe a tee or a belt or some other accessory. And maybe every other two months I'll splurge on a new pair of shoes or premium denim, etc...

However, if I made more money and wasn't a poor college student, I'd be buying shoes and jeans at least once a week.

If you're going to Nom de Guerre, you might as well go to it's sister store ISA in Williamsburg, on North Sixth Street.

I agree with guru, check out the Meatpacking District, I like Auto on Washington Street, West Fourteenth is where most of the major brands are. More independant stuff on Little West Twelfth and Gansevoort Streets.

You should hit up the Comme des Garcons and Balenciaga stores on West 22nd St in Chelsea, even if you aren't going to buy anything, the store designs are worth the visit alone. And don't be intimidated by the door whores, they're actually harmless and nice.

There isn't really anywhere else left for "artists" to go.

On that note, I think the eastern stretches of Grand St in Williamsburg [east of the BQE] will still be the center of where artists live for quite a bit still. As well as the southern extremities of Williamsburg below and around the Williamsburg Bridge. But overall I don't see the future of Williamsburg shining that brightly, especially with the new master plans from the city. In a few years I imagine it will look more like the Jersey City waterfront then the low rise industrial/ blue collar bohemian character it has now.

I doubt Red Hook will develop beyond typical yuppie condo development cause it lacks any real mass transit infrastructure. But honestly, I've never been there largely cause of the lack of said infrastructure. However, the more adventurous locales in Brooklyn are where I see most of the development coming, like Bushwick to the east of Williamsburg or even dare I say Bed Stuy or god forbid Brighton Beach, etc... I've always prefered the more diverse neighborhoods in the city, and I think others do too.

I think Alphabet City in Manhattan still has plenty of room for development.

As for the Bronx, I agree in terms of developing neighborhoods it is essentially untouched territory. It would be interesting to see if any real development goes on cause that commute to Manhattan from there would be killer.

I think the real estate market has to burst eventually, prices are insane, especially in Manhattan. Hopefully when it does places that are already under development as new "trend" districts like the LES, Hells Kitchen, or Eastern Williamsburg will be able to maintain thier current vibes without having to sell out to a local outlet of the Gap or Diesel or being littered with wine bars and boutique hotels.

1] Paris Hilton :: I like beating up coked up whores, plus she wouldn't put up a fight.

2] QE :: Why isn't their 15 minutes up yet, I don't need some burned out flamers they picked up off of 23rd St to tell me how to dress.

3] George Bush :: or all republicans in general. Especially Dick Cheney, but I think he would like it a bit to much if I slapped him.

4] Oprah :: Since when is it racist that a luxury store which closes at a set posted time won't let you in after hours? The woman is a billionaire and complains? Really, have your overpaid assistant call ahead and arrange after hours shopping next time.

5] Fred Durst :: While I would so do him, he is annoying and his sex tape is dissapointing.

Ressurection is in NoLita in Manhattan. On Mulberry Street above Spring I think?

It's one of the better collections of vintage. But it is not thrift by any means. In fact it's incredibly expensive. Check the SuperFuture review for more details.

Don't know anything about the Reminiscence place, but it's on West 23rd Street just past Fifth Ave.

Found this link, you might find it interesting. It is a pretty comprehensive list of Manhattan thrift/vintage places.

what exactly are you looking to study? just general art? or any specific type of art? art history?

you should pick the school based upon what you want to study.

Like if you want to do painting, traditional arts, etc... pick a school with a good program, like Pratt.

If you want fashion etc... pick some place like FIT or Parsons.

Have you looked at Cooper Union, it's very competitive, but one of the best programs in the nation.

I suggest RISDE in Providence, Rhode Island. it's a very good program, especially for choosing a specific field of specialization.

As for schools an hour away from NY. There aren't that many options, unless you go to some college in New Jersey or Long Island, or god forbid Yale in Conneticut. If I were you and had the opportunity to go to school in the city, I would go there.

I agree, sometimes art schools can be very insulated in terms of your well rounded education. If you are just going to go off and do graphic design or something with your bachelor's degree, then just go to an art school. But if you are planning Grad school afterwards go to an lib arts school, the business, management, lit, etc... classes go a long way. And besides you can always go to an "arts" program at a graduate school anyways.

If you're gonna go to a suburban school, I think the only ones worth considering are big state schools in "college" towns. Like UWisconsin in Madison, or IU in Bloomington, etc... While most big state schools and environs don't have the options of an urban school in terms of musuems, art galleries, shopping [not including Urban Outfitters, cause sadly they have set up shop in most major college towns now], etc... they do have a lot of activities. I personally have visited many friends at UWis in Madison and that campus is hopping. I was suprised at how diverse and progressive the campus was, the entire city for that matter.

Anyways, I'd go with an urban school, in a big city like Chicago, S.F, NY, etc... I've heard lots' of good things about RISDe in Providence, RI.
