CSUF Grand Central Art Center is proud to present the exhibition

The Saddest Place on Earth the art of Camille Rose Garcia

    October 1 - December 18, 2005

A 138-page,  hardcover book featuring  more than 100 color images has been produced for this exhibition.

On October 1, Camille Rose Garcia will sign books from 6-7 pm, and an exhibition reception will be take place from 6-10 pm.

    According to Merry Karnowsky Gallery:

Camille Rose Garcia was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in the generic suburbs of Orange County, visiting Disneyland and going to punk shows with the other disenchanted youth of that era. Her paintings of creepy cartoon children living in wasteland fairy tales are critical commentaries on the failures of capitalist utopias.

Creative influences include Phillip K. Dick, William Burroughs, Henry Darger, Walt Disney, as well as politically aware bands like The Clash and Dead Kennedys.  Her work has appeared in Flaunt Magazine, Rolling Stone, Juxtapoz, and Paper Magazine, among others. Her art has been exhibited internationally in Spain, Germany and Italy, as well as in Los Angeles and New York.  She currently lives in Los Angeles.

As Mike McGee wrote in the essay for the book, The Saddest Place on Earth the art of Camille Rose Garcia:

Camille Rose Garcia’s art might lead one to think it is from a distant time and place. The surfaces of her paintings are fatigued and suggest layers that have been worn and repeatedly painted over; her patterns and motifs allude to an array of eras from the Middle Ages to the 1950s—with heavy leanings      toward the 50s; and her figures are remote cousins of classic fairytale and early-twentieth-century cartoon and animation characters. Yet Garcia is very much an artist of and about our time. The late playwright Arthur Miller told several interviewers during his lifetime that what motivated him to write was a burning desire to critique the society in which he lived. Garcia has a similar passion to create inventive characters and imaginary worlds that function on a gamut of levels but most pointedly to assess and comment upon the twenty-first century world in which she lives. As she told an interviewer, “Things that make me mad motivate me.â€

In a 2003 article for the British magazine Modern Painter, in which he was asked to identify the twenty-four hottest artists in Los Angeles, art-world pundit and Coagula magazine founder Mat Gleason wrote that Garcia is “the most interesting acolyte of the Juxtapoz magazine art movement.†She has received considerable coverage by the press, lauded by mainstream and alternative critics alike. One Los Angeles Times critic wrote, “Garcia’s paintings have a dark, dark charm.†In a cover story for Los Angeles Times Magazine about Chicano art today, another writer observed, “Her experiences and work perfectly reflect the crossroads at which this new generation of [Chicano] artists has arrived.

  5. Span of Sunset in LA and Rolling Roadshow will have an event this Saturaday.

"Set in the seedy underbelly of the 80's punk rock scene, REPO MAN was a major influence on nearly every modern indie director. For our screening, attendees will first scour the city looking for the movie's cornerstone prop: an actual '64 Malibu. The person who manages to drive it to the screening location wins the Rally and gets to keep the car! Tickets are also available for the screening only, without the road rally." 8. LOS ANGELES - Underground comic czars Jim Mahfood and Dave Crosland will be exhibiting a collection of original, musically-inspired art this June, in a show appropriately titled "Punk To Funk". The opening

reception for this month-long display of funk-fueled paintings, portraits, and more is sponsored by Red Stripe, and will take place on June 3rd from 7 - 10pm at the Meltdown Gallery, located inside

Meltdown Comics & Collectibles, 7522 Sunset Blvd.,

    Los Angeles.

    323.851.7223 www.meltcomics.com.

A self-published creator since his college years, Jim Mahfood shook the foundations of the comic world in the late 90's, with his work on Kevin Smith's Clerks comic books. Since his debut, Mahfood has blazed

through the industry like a human tornado, with independent releases like Grrl Scouts, Zombie Kid, and Stupid Comics. All the while, he's still been able to apply his unique style to the

mainstream, with his work on Peter Parker: Spider-Man, Bart Simpson's Treehouse of Horror, and Marvel's upcoming release, the Wha Huh?! Special.

An editorial/fine arts illustrator, who's work has appeared in magazines like Spin, Venus, and Tastes Like Chicken, Dave Crosland stomped into comics like a pen-wielding Godzilla with the book Puffed

in 2003. Since then, Crosland has been responsible for artwork on several indie titles, including Heaven LLC and Bad Ideas. That's not to mention his regular contributions to comic anthologies, such as

Meathaus and Punchthroat Industries' Ragtag. This June will mark the international release of his first self-written work, Slop: Analecta, a collection of short stories and pinups.

Jim and Dave co-founded The Silky Bureaucrats as an outlet to kick out the jams on their collaborative and more aligned art endeavors. Both are artists for Image Comics (Berkeley, CA). Both perform at "live art" shows, where they paint mural-styled pieces at clubs while bands perform. And both like to listen to a loud, eclectic mix of music while they work.

Established in 1982 by Gaston Dominguez-Letelier and Ilia Carson-Letelier, Meltdown Comics & Collectibles has become a key component in the cultural sphere of Los Angeles. A must-see pop

culture destination for some and a valuable research spot for others, the cosmopolitan approach to the core stock – comic books from around the world – has earned praise throughout the globe.

Among awards won over the years are a Best of LA nod from Los Angeles Magazine and a Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award.

  9. I've just finally recovered from "Promiseland" event last week. One of the things i still remember are Dr. Romanelli's Airmax shoes. As kids say on Niketalk: i'd cop em. Anyway has anyone gotten his clothing? I'm thinking to have one of the Romanelli's jackets made. What is with all the love from Nike? Is he down with them?
