Denime 66xx World Tour

interesting perspective.

having not been in places where you have the freedom to do speeds like that and being legal, most of us look at it differently. for us here in australia, perth, they will try to get you even if you're doing 103 in a 100 highway, which makes it frustrating for us when people are 'trying' to overtake at 101/2 over some one doing 98/99 or they just hog the right lanes without any lane discipline.

one thing i admire about european driving especially germany is that there's a huge amount of lane discipline and people know which lane they should be in..

Yeah, I can definitely see both sides of the argument. It really depends on the top speed. I feel that 130 km/h is pretty ideal, it's high enough that overtaking trucks doesn't take ages and you don't feel like you're only crawling.

Lane discipline is alright with most people I guess. It's pretty standard to carefully watch your rear view mirror for those 250 km/h BMWs and Porsches - and if you don't they will use high beams to make sure you're making room ;)

Volvo-Style, I took delivery of them today! No Autobahn pics yet, since I just picked them up after work and went home, but I took some (shitty phone-)pics along the way to properly document their stay.

Main post office of my city, there was a line.

bO1bRZQl.jpg

The post office is right next to the train station. It's so ugly around here, you'd never guess Regensburg is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Germany. The general area has been settled since the stone age, Celts named it Radasbona, Romans called their fort here Castra Regina.

On the way home I passed one of many beautiful beer gardens. This one has Kneitinger beer, one of three big local breweries and the best one IMO. The tallest building in the frame was once a malthouse, now it's a small concert venue (I've seen Nazareth, Popa Chubby, The Spencer Davis Group and dozens of others here) and houses rehearsal rooms for bands.

vkF0k7Rl.jpg

My way home then takes me through the university, literally - there's a tunnel beneath it. The University of Regensburg is a 1970s blob of concrete.

I stopped by my local supermarket to get some refreshments for tonight, it's Friday after all :) There was another line ^^

Once I got home my two year old was naturally very curious about what daddy brought home:

"It's pants!"

Though once I started telling her more about them she lost interest quickly  :D

First order of business after putting them on was playing with Duplo.

yVMIb9Al.jpg

And here's a fit pic. They fit fine through thighs and legs, the waist is good too, but the rise is a little low for my liking (some crushing of balls is going on). Definitely manageable for a month, though.

The denim feels reaaaaally smooth, more so than I expected.

Thanks SLAB for sending them over and to you all for having me ;)

SLAB didn't get around to washing the jeans before sending them over, so I threw them in with a bit of denim that had piled up.

Still drying, so I didn't wear them today - they got to chill in the nice October sun.

Today was a typical slow Saturday anyways, didn't do anything of consequence. Just walking the dog:

qpzkKvpl.jpg

If you ever think about getting a dachshund - don't :D I swear that dog is higher maintenance than a toddler.

The doggy route has a view of the city. In the distance on the left is the cathedral, and the line of trees in front of it is where the medieval city walls used to be. Now a belt of parks runs around the old town. It's a small city, it wouldn't take much more than an hour to just walk to the cathedral from where I stand here.

x3YOKqPl.jpg

Later I was out getting groceries, we do most of our shopping in a nearby part of town that is only worth mentioning because retired pope Benedict XVI used to live here.

Id86TVZl.jpg

Fun (?) fact: as an altar boy I served during several masses under (then) Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, he used to hold a mass in honor of his sister in our church, because she's buried on the parish's graveyard. Afterwards he'd invite us all to breakfast.

Oh and here is the "international specialties" lane in the supermarket. Asia is mostly bottled sauces.

BSeQlyMl.jpg

Tomorrow I'll document the jeans to see if they'd popped even more.

So here's how they look by now:

My daugher didn't exactly get what I was doing there :D

So. I think they look pretty great! I'm amazed at how faded the knees look already. You can also see the different wallet preferences of you guys ;)

What I'm not the biggest fan of is the denim itself. I have to admit that it's too smooth and uniform to really catch my interest - the hand feel is a bit boring.

my wallet belongs in my bag for now, but if there was a choice, it would be the right. i'm assuming the left side would be for left handers?

when i first had it, the denim had the occasional slub here and there, but overall, they were pretty smooth compared to the stuff i had. that said, the feel of wearing it for me was really good. the colours now are rather light and somewhat vintage looking..

  • 1 month later...
So, I'm sorry for not posting in a while! Work got really busy, and also my kid brought home a nasty cold that also knocked out first my wife and then me - and then there have been many nights when I just was too lazy ;) Here's a little dump to make up for it.

Since I last posted, autumn went into full swing...

Went out for a few beers a couple of times. Haven't gotten around to eating out in a while, so no food porn ;) Our favorite spot is Kneitinger, home of one of three local breweries and the best one in my opinion.

Having some beers of course usually means ending the night with junk food ;)

A couple weeks ago we spent the day with some friends in their "alpine cabin"... that they built in their garden. We had a traditional breakfast of bavarian veal sausage (white sausage). I forgot to take an appetizing pic of the untouched sausages ;) The effort and money they put into the cabin is mindboggling, I wouldn't even know where to source all the deer antlers :D

And Christmas season means Christmas markets, hot spiced wine and grilled sausages. Random pic from a work event last week:

TZ9d9Ikl.jpg

That ugly big concrete shopping mall is what they plopped down in old towns in the 60s before they came to their senses and started preserving historic buildings. You can see the cathedral peeking over in the background.

cBGJb1fl.jpg

One of the nicest Christmas markets is located in a beergarden across the danube, you cross the historic stone bridge to get there. No pics of the bridge itself since it was too dark ;)

From the bridge you get a view that passes for the skyline of Regensburg:

This is the "Goliath building", named so for, you guessed it, the mural. (Oskar Schindler lived near here for a few years.)

Christmas lights make for romantic alleys:

Here's a full frontal of the Cathedral St. Peter, one of the most important Gothic cathedrals in southern Germany. Construction started in 1273 and lasted for 300 years.

You can't get a better shot because the square around it is pretty small, right behind me when taking the above pic:

And for closing here's a bavarian brass band playing Christmas songs:

So what about the jeans? I've worn them a fair bit, but to be honest, the rise is just too low for me to be wearing them for weeks. They're not really comfortable for me so there's been days when I just wasn't in the mood. I'll take some updated pics soon but there hasn't been a lot of progress on my part.

They've been with me for 6 weeks now - so who's next? :)

The tour is not forgotten! Second round for me! Thank you Cucoo for sending them off and the postcards/seeds.

Nothing remarkable is happening yet, but I'll be heading to Joshua tree this weekend so I'll be sure to document my time, I'm also planning on doing some side by side comparisons of when I had these last when I find the time today.

I just spent the weekend out in Joshua Tree and the Salton Sea with my wife and two dogs, and of course, I brought the Denime's along for the ride. If you have ever been out to the California desert, I highly recommend it, it is a really strange place to explore, with vast desert, abandoned buildings, HUGE ecological disasters (Salton Sea), and a community of lawless people living as free as they can.

We spent our first day in Big Morango, and Joshua Tree, where we explored and had a few meals before having a relaxing night:

The next day we headed down to the Salton Sea to explore a bit of the stranger side of the desert. For those of you that do not know about the Salton Sea, it is the largest lake in California that is actually highly toxic due to it's lack of drainage and shallow depth. It used to have a thriving tourist economy back in the 50's before it became the dead body of water it is today:

DSCF3243.jpgDSCF3242.jpgDSCF3245.jpgDSCF3237.jpg

After the Salton Sea, we headed to Salvation Mountain, the work of one man who was still building it up until his death at 80 years old. I'm not a religious man, so it felt a bit strange to impede on those who were there out of faith but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

DSCF3258.jpgDSCF3257.jpg

All in all it was a great trip out of the big city!

oh man, the Salton sea (and imperial valley more generally) is one of the places I'm most interested in visiting. Awesome you got to go there, and excellent photos too!

as an aside, if you're interested in learning more about the history of the region, im happy to send you my copy of william t vollmann's "imperial"--funnily enough, it's what I was reading during my stint with the denimes! an excellent history of the valley and surrounding areas (riverside, northern baja and sonora, and los angeles) as well as of the waves and fares of migrants who have settled or passed through the region since the 16th century. anyway, the salton sea figures prominently in the book as a signifier of land ownership and power, the importance of water, and the lunacy required to engineer an agricultural paradise out of what's otherwise an unforgiving and inhospitable desert. i'll stop rambling now.
