I personally don't know much about either poster (nor do I particularly care about them) so I don't know if they had a history of violations etc. BUT--as a single incident it just seems quite harsh to ban them for what seems like a harmless, lighthearted jab at the mods.

it seems that since you don't know those users, and you connected them as being banned, you saw the posts that they got banned for, and not only was your question one you had the answer for, but was a leading one that you posted in order to be able to say that you thought it was wrong.
i will remind you in public so everyone else can understand, that 2 centing on moderation decision is still not welcome if only because you do not have all the information available to you that the moderators have.
as far as banning for making jabs about moderators, if it is a jab made at another moderator i have no hesitation about taking the posting privileges away from that user. it is only when it is about me that i wonder if it is the right thing to do.
given that these jabs when left alone in the past created a culture which in turn bred full scale riots i have no doubt that removing a user at the first sign of trouble is the best course of action.
