Fashion Books

Thought id start a thread here for people to discuss and suggest all books regarding fashion, im used to theory texts and im allways reading artist monographs - but now im considering an MA in fashion, ive checked out my favourites like yale, and phaidon but most books ive seen about fashion tend to be abit "historical" in their approach... I sometimes think the best articles are found in the magazines like Purple and 10men etc. So are there any wonderful publications out there im missing? Stuff about the usual Rick Owens, CCP, Julius, Undercover sort of stuff?

Not sure if this falls in line with where this thread is headed, but Dana Thomas' "Deluxe: How Luxury Lost it's Luster" is a great read for some background on brands like Vuitton, Dior, Balenciaga and more, as well as their foray into middle market goods like leather accessories and perfume. It's aimed to be a critique of the mainstreaming of luxury brands, but an interesting perspective anyhow...

i was actually looking at getting my now ex-girlfriend a fashion book as part of an anniversary present. i live in a tiny city and i randomly looked in a chain bookstore for the first time in forveer as i usually buy online and was pretty amazed at their 'fashion' selection. one was some huge bible sized thing yves saint laurent (she is/was a huge fan) which i was going to pick up and the other on raf simons of all people. i might go back to get the raf one for myself, even though i don't own any of his pieces it was a really great book and i'd definitely recommend it to any fans.

in hindsight it was good i didn't pick up the YSL book as it was about $300 AUS and she dumped me a fortnight later. :)

Hi Guys, bit of help here, will rep.

Im looking for a magazine, its a mens, lifestyle, fashion and art and literature sort of thing. Looks quite plain on the front, I think it had a short title like 'ore' but that's only an inkling. Its probably a more intellectually bias version of inventory magazine but on a budget production. I saw it somewhere and now I can find it anywhere......

Help

That looks awesome. Any scans???

no scans, just some pics..

the designer bio and (mostly) publicly available collection photos are all easily gathered by googling anyway... but its the collection of designers i've never heard of, as well as the overall package which make it a really good read

I own this, and it's not very interesting. In general, I'd probably rather buy books by artists than photographers. My sister has all those jawns anyways so I guess they are in the family.

i really like this

goes beyond the typical "designer index" thing that other fashion books (breadth other depth ones) try to do

cultstreetwearbyjoshsim.jpg

and this is also a good read, no matter if you don't even do streetwear

still can appreciate it

http://www.amazon.com/Take-Ivy-Shosuke-Ishizu/dp/1576875504/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1282842968&sr=8-1

Product Description

Described by The New York Times as, “a treasure of fashion insiders,” Take Ivy was originally published in Japan in 1965, setting off an explosion of American-influenced “Ivy Style” fashion among students in the trendy Ginza shopping district of Tokyo. The product of four sartorial style enthusiasts, Take Ivy is a collection of candid photographs shot on the campuses of America’s elite, Ivy League universities. The series focuses on men and their clothes, perfectly encapsulating the unique academic fashion of the era. Whether lounging in the quad, studying in the library, riding bikes, in class, or at the boathouse, the subjects of Take Ivy are impeccably and distinctively dressed in the finest American-made garments of the time.

Take Ivy is now considered a definitive document of this particular style, and rare original copies are highly sought after by “trad” devotees worldwide. A small-run reprint came out in Japan in 2006 and sold out almost immediately. Now, for the first time ever, powerHouse is reviving this classic tome with an all-new English translation. Ivy style has never been more popular, in Japan or stateside, proving its timeless and transcendent appeal. Take Ivy has survived the decades and is an essential object for anyone interested in the history or future of fashion.
