I have seen:

Ninja Scroll

Spirited Away

Vampire Hunter D

Ghost In The Shell

.....probably some others

I plan on seeing:

Howl's Moving Castle

Grave Of Fireflies

Cowboy Bebop

Any comments and/or suggestions. I am sure there are tons of excellent but super-hard-to-find films, but I am hoping for some more readily available recommendations.

Hellsing, Samurai Champloo and Samurai 7 were already mentioned. Gokusen is a real funny one that you can check out and Macross Plus is another good one. Two animes currently airing are Death Note and NANA, these two are my favorites, very great.

monster (good story line/philosphical themes)

cobra (groovy soundtrack. a kind of futuristic lupin the 3rd)

gantz (very fun scifi title. lot's of action/gore. ending was let down. yes, this is based off of the young jump title)

ergo proxy (newest offering from the cowboy bebop and samurai champloo production team)

gankutsuou (based on the count of monte christo)

RAPEMAN (about a contract/mercenary superhero type rapist who rapes bitches)

Haha. England, you OTAKU!:P

So Otaku right now, ha hah. Train Man maybe?

RAPEMAN (about a contract/mercenary superhero type rapist who rapes bitches)

This sounds fucking amazing! First on my list.

Seriously?

Oh yes. How could I forget Death Note? It's dark and disturbed in its own way.

Berserk is another dark anime that comes to mind, but the manga is much, much better than the anime.

I have heard some decent things about the Berserk series but when I went to my local DVD shop the boxes for it were all old and the screenshots on the back looked like crap. Maybe I need to give it a second chance.

if you liked cowboy bebop (did you see the movie or the series- watch the series if you haven't) you'll probably like samurai champloo (same guy, watanabe.. not as good though in my opinion, but they got fat jon to produce some of the stuff).

one piece is good, never got through it all, only up to ~100

naruto, again only got to ~100

i can't remember what else i've seen ..

another vote for monster. best anime ever. FLCL is a close second.

highly recommended: ghost in the shell, the whole series. unrivalled depth.

and also:

berserk

last exile

paranoia agent

12 kokuki

rahexphon

wolf's rain

hare guu

and for movies, besides miyazaki, kon satoshi does some wonderful movies.

Ghost in the Shell, both movies

PLUS Stand Alone Complex seasons ` and 2

PLUS Solid State Society (the movie based on the series)

^ this is scifi/anime at some of its best

Howl's Moving Castle is good, just not as good as Spirited Away, my favorite Miyazaki flick, just so many layers to it. its crazy.

You said Vampire Hunter D, are you talking about the recent remake by Kawajiri (who also did Ninja Scroll) or the old school Vampire D with the Amano Character designs?

if its the new one and you liked its style, Yoshiaki Kawajiri has a DEEP list. Wicked City is a good movie, Cyber City Oedo is decent, and he also did one of the episodes of the Animatrix

Ergo Proxy: another scifi/cyberpunk series that recently ended. im about a quarter through with it but i like it so far.

Eureka 7: might not be everyones cup of tea, but one of the more recent mecha anime that isnt as annoying as your typical Gundam series. Alot of funny/cool references to older anime series and even alot of musical references. (the title to each episode is a title to a song) and it goes from New Order, etc

Macross: watch the OG series, Macross Plus (crazy animation) Macross Zero(pretty good CG animation for the combat scenes) and Do You Remember Love? You could probably skip Macross 7

Gunbuster: OLD SCHOOL anime, 6 episode OVA by Gainax, who would go on to do Evangelion etc etc. Very epic blah blah blah

Gunbuster 2 (diebuster): the sequel that recently came out, done by the same team that did...

FLCL: this imho is another MUST WATCH series. so many references, good music, takes a coupe viewings to really take it all in.

current "shonen" series that i watch:

Naruto: ninjas. nuff said. (for those that watch it the fillers finally end in feb !! woo)

Bleach: Demons vs samurai(?) warriors.

I'm sure you can find a ton of info on the web about these two right now..

both are very very very formulaic but they both have their moments, especially Naruto

The Hakkenden: this is an "older" OVA but its a goody. whats kinda interesting is that iirc for each episode they had a different animation team, it actually works out pretty well..

ok i'll stop there for now, i think ive already proved how much of a nerdling i am at this point..

Otaku no Video

One of the funniest anime shows I've ever seen. The story is about this normal guy who slowly gets drawn into the world of anime, and aspires to become the biggest otaku in the world.

But during the anime, one of the main draws are the various live "interviews" with various otakus that mock their hobbies. One of the interviews involves this guy who is a porn otaku and he is being asked questions like "Do you enjoy your hobby?" and "Do you wish you have a girlfriend?"

It's kind of hard to track down (well, for me) but highly recommended on my part as well as with the other shows mentioned above.

anime series'

I would prefer movies as I would love to watch some series but probably wouldn't have the time to follow them all the way through.

You said Vampire Hunter D, are you talking about the recent remake by Kawajiri (who also did Ninja Scroll) or the old school Vampire D with the Amano Character designs?

Great info./recommendations Ryan, thanks. The Vampire Hunter I saw had this redhead farmer chick in it with big tits as the main girl. She recruited D to hunt the white-haired Dracula dude.

if you liked cowboy bebop (did you see the movie or the series- watch the series if you haven't) you'll probably like samurai champloo (same guy, watanabe.. not as good though in my opinion, but they got fat jon to produce some of the stuff).

one piece is good, never got through it all, only up to ~100

naruto, again only got to ~100

i can't remember what else i've seen ..

I knew a couple guys obsessed with Cowboy Bebop back in High School. I would love to get into the series but don't want to drop the cash to buy it and the download I looked up is 6 GB.....which would take a damn long time. I am going to get the movie, however.

I did recently watch this anime about this group of the last samurai in Japan that has this girl who uses a sword with the blade turned around backwards since she vows never to kill anyone again.......it kinda sucked.
