lots of people complain about Cinespace Tuesdays but I've found it to be a pretty good deal if you get on the guest list for $5.

last time I went Spoon was headlining and it was right after they released Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

great show and for $5.... way worth it

Other nights when the bands suck it's been a drag. Lots of superficial hipsters looking to get their photos taken.

I would say check out the calendars of the MoCa and the other museums around the city. Lots of nights they have free concerts put on by radio stations. It's a good deal and another hipster magnet.

LAX Sunday is like Cinespace Tuesday. Most music venues in Echo Park and Silver Lake are hipster holes.

That's about the extent of my LA nawledge. I'm gonna be moving back there after graduation sometime in June.

This makes me think that Steve Aoki was in Mexico a few weeks ago. A friend of mine got to spend some time partying with him. Very cool.

I'm 23, in the film industry and looking for a condo/apartment/loft in a newer building in Los Angeles. I'm looking to spend between $300k-500k, 1 bedroom with a city view. West Hollywood or downtown would be perfect...anyone have any suggestions?? Thank you!!

You're 23 in the film industry and you're buying a condo? You really don't want to rent?

This is the best resource to preliminarily gauge what's out there:

http://guests.themls.com/

$500K or less in W. Hollywood will get you, on average, a one or two-bedroom in a fairly old building that will likely have poor resale value. You will also be hard pressed to have a 'city view' anywhere in W. Hollywood. We have about two residential buildings in this entire area that are higher than 10 stories and there isn't much 'city' to look at unless your definition of 'city' is $2.5 million dollar 2-bedroom houses, Cedars Sinai, and the gay area of Santa Monica Blvd. If you want a high-rise, you are looking at Century City (out of your price range), select spots in Hollywood, or downtown if this is an important factor for you.

If you want something stylish or unique, downtown definitely still has some deals in that range.

i would definitely wait a bit and then buy downtown when the prices get really good. i have seen some really good deals and considering how expensive the rest of the city is i think it's only a matter of time before we see the area totally gentrified.

If you want views then I suggest looking for a place in the hills or a high rise down town. You're definitely not going to get any amazing views in W hollywood.

I'm renting until I can put a down payment on a $1m house in los feliz/E hollywood.

la.curbed.com for commentary.

That said, you'd be fucking stupid to purchase right now.

I'll probably be flying to Los Angeles at the end of the month for a few days to hit up the shops and stuff.

I have a flight booked, but no hotel.. Where's good to stay? Cheaper, the better.

How's the prices at Chrome Hearts nowadays? Same as before, or did they kick it up with the weak US dollar? And do they limit the amount you can purchase?

What notable shops? Undefeated, Chrome Hearts I definitely have to go.. but where else? Looking to cop some cool stuff, jewelry, design pieces, etc.

Ways to get around?

Food places to try? (Cheap)

cinespace sucks. it's all fucking dorks who don't know shit about shit. but if you must go, the general rule about clubs in LA is as long as there isn't a private event... as long as you get there within the first hour of doors opening you won't have a problem, and bring girls... a single guy won't get in unless you know someone. but again, cinespace blows and Aoki is a shitty DJ. i usually hang out at Teddy's... but unless you have 6 models with you, know someone, or somhow became a regular there (this one is me)... good luck.

I know there are plenty of LA SF'ers on this board and we haven't had as many foodie threads as our East Coast counterparts.

I realize that in the Valley / Alhambra / Glendale, etc. there are tons of excellent cheap places, but let's keep this particular thread from Downtown westward.

I live in a very unfortunate area of LA for affordable dining, but luckily I work further east where there are literally hundreds of amazing places for under $10. Let's hear some suggestions (Masuerte, I'm sure you've got plenty of input for the downtown scene). I'll probably add to this if there's much interest..........there are too many places to list.

Sapp Coffee Shop:
http://noodlewhore.b...-thai-town.html

I love this place. Makes me feel like I'm back in Thailand. Bunch of friendly Thai women run the place and afterwards you can pick up some excellent mango sticky rice at Bhan Khanom a couple blocks away. The best Thai grocery store in LA is close as well. Pick up some Chang / Singha / Beer Lao for the weekend.

Pho Cafe:
http://colleencuisin...silverlake.html

There are definitely more hipsters here than I usually care to hang around, but with most of the decent pho places being pretty far east, this place is a great option.

Vietnamese Soy Cafe:
http://www.vietsoy.com/

This place kicks ass. No sign, about 6 seats, only open a couple hours a day, but damn it's good. They make their own flavored soy milks and although the menu has about 5 items on it, they're all good.

Singapore's Banana Leaf
http://thisisgonnabe...ers-market.html

Definitely not as cheap as it should be (though most places in the Farmer's Market are a bit inflated) but, it's the only place around for decent Malay/Singaporean, etc food. Roti Pratha here is awesome.

Pampas Grill
http://www.pampas-grill.com/

Another Farmer's Market spot. For about $10 you can get an enormous plate of lamb, sausage, fried plantains, yucca, etc. So good.

Holy Guacamole
http://www.lataco.co...le-santa-monica

My go-to spot when drinking around Main St. (Venice / Santa Monica). A bit pricier than your average taco spot, but the carne asada tacos are worth it.

Yuca's
http://www.yucasla.com/

Yuca's is a stand that is even smaller and more cramped than a taco truck. There are literally 5 people working in a 4' x 4' shack and all the tables are outside surrounding it. The cochinita pibil tacos / burritos are excellent. Really cool spot in the Los Feliz / Silverlake area. They sell Mexican coke at the liquor store next door.

Best Fish Taco's in Ensenada
http://www.yelp.com/.../query:ensenada

Aside from the retarded name, the fish tacos here are fucking great and cheap.

Places I need to try:

Tokyo 7-7
http://www.yelp.com/...dYVOwLJe5nJ1c_A

You can get a full breakfast here for $2 and a burger for $2.50. I've heard great things, but haven't been.

Santouka Ramen
http://www.rameniac....ntouka_west_la/

I've been to Orochon, Daikokuya, etc but haven't checked this place out.....

Shitty/Overrated cheap places to avoid:

Tito's Tacos
Pink's Hot Dogs
Zankou Chicken

Since I mostly just fuck with Downtown/Echo Park -

Blossom
http://www.blossomrestaurant.com/
Decent neighborhood Vietnamese. Nothing too crazy, but good standards.

Phillipes
http://www.philippes.com/
Yes, people hype it, but it is good and draws a great crowd. Double dip, add jack cheese.

Chop Suey/Far Bar
http://www.yelp.com/...bar-los-angeles
Ever evolving bar menu that can be hit or miss. The singapore style noodles are great drunk food. tbh tho, I come here to drink more than eat-

Chanos
http://tacohunt.blog.../01/chanos.html
I'm all for my local taco trucks and stands. Chanos still tops for the best carne asada taco. USC kids, West Adams locals, and Downtown hipsters can make it an interesting mix. Drive thru window is on the wrong side tho-

Buu Dien
http://www.yelp.com/...ien-los-angeles
I mentioned this place in the sandwich thread. Cheap, cheap, cheap.

BriteSpot
http://www.yelp.com/...nts-los-angeles
Not sure if I should throw this in, but- It's gone down a bit, filled with hipster scum, can be hit or miss. BUT I still make it for the steak and eggs every few hangovers.

Cafe Metropol
http://www.cafemetropol.com/
Some very good breakfest options for under $10. Good place to take a leisurly brunch date.

...and on-

edit-
I can't fucking stand Tito's either. Goddamn westsiders....

Hey guys,

I'll be in Los Angeles this summer and I'm wondering where to pick some things up/opinions. Working on a budget here...

Shoes being considered:

Vans Authentics - Classic, easy to find.

MJ Vans - Will there be any still around at the Marc Jacobs store?

German Army Sneakers - Is there some sort of german army surplus place where I can get these or are they germany only?

Jackets:

Surplus/Alpha Industries M65 - What would the best place to get this be?

German Army Parka - Where to find? I've heard some good stuff about these jackets, slimmer than the M65?

Thanks.
