Shredding money!

Why not buy the food, do a photographic spread of it in some eye popping way, then donate the food? Generate pr with the food giveaway

Serious

That could work. But that something different. This is all about shocking people. I've gotten a whole lot of reactions already. It's all about sustainability! I'm hoping this will make people think about the way they consume food. This isn't about feeding the poor. That's a different project.

And sarang hae, it has to be Norwegian money, and a part of the project is also about getting the money!

I think whitney's right

i get what you're going for, shredded cash carries a lot more weight/shock value then just a ton of food.  Plus even if you decided to do $3500 worth of food instead you'd still need to raise $3500.

But on the other hand the food + donation option seems more legitimate to the cause you're trying to raise awareness of.  Also you gotta think about people's reactions.  Sure the cash would shock people but it would also prompt thoughts like: "this guy shredded $3500 that he could have donated to the cause if he really cared..." etc.  Food + donation would be the better option imo.

I see your point, and I've thought it through. But my belief is that this will end up more valuable than just donating money. It's not so much about the the actual food. It's not about the fact that we could feed people with the food/money we throw away. How ever decadent that may sound. It's about sustainability. It's about how all this over consumption is ruining out planet. For example 20% of all the green house gases in the US comes from rotting food.

I'm ready for all those thoughts. I want that. I want to get people thinking.

But thanks for all the input, I do appreciate it!

this is the kind of shit you look back at and think "damn I was a pretentious fuck"

Well, kind of the whole point. It's not any less pretentious throwing away food just cause you don't want leftovers!

What's the point of it? For you to look back at it and wonder how you were such a pretentious fuck?

What are you even trying to do? Fix the environment by taking a picture of shredded money? What the fuck is that going to solve? Even if you succeeded to make a change, it's not like people will donate the amount of saved money or anything, they'll just use it on other shit which fucks up the environment.

People here giving you legit advice, which would benefit both people in need and your so-called cause, but you won't listen to it, because you want shock value, not because you want to change the environment, but because people will then see you as edgy. "Damn, that guy just maculated 22k, he doesnt give a fuck"

Do you see how you're being pretentious now?

edit: People don't throw away food just because they don't want leftovers, they throw it away because it's gone bad.

Or maybe they do throw it out because they just don't want leftovers in Norway. I've seen videos of norwegians pouring out expensive champagne in their sinks (which reminds me of the shit you're trying to pull)

Maybe people in Norway just have a thing about throwing shit away.

You should shred jawnz instead. Maybe spread some sort of anti-consumerism message. Start with all yours first then ask for donations.

oof ...

Helmut Lang: "MAKE IT HARD"

The designer famed for his minimal style has launched his latest East Hamptons expo, shredding his own clothing archive to make sculptures

 2011.

if i understand it right, he had also just received a number of "donations" of classic hl pieces from private collections to the brand archive he kept in an office space above the now theory-owned store on mercer st.

now whose "shredding" project is the more effete and masturbatory stunt, helmut's or OP's ... ? u decide

Wow, I never thought this would go so far over sufu'er head!

Gofundme is only one way I'm raising money. With cash and a bank account I'm almost half way there. The school will fund the second half when I reach the half way point.

your reactions is the whole point of this. Hope you talk all kinds of shit about it!

I'll have at least one, maybe two articles in major norwegian newspapers by the end of next week. My school is backing me on this, so it'll be a big part of the promotion for the exhibition.

If you´re only going to photograph the shredded money, why not just get fake money, shred it and then lie about it?

Furthermore, fuck the photos.  He could have a constant feed or display of fake money being shred endlessly over a pile of food and still make a vivid point.

It tickles me though because the money thing just ain't new.  A friend of mine studying at mcad years ago posed some mannequins in sexual positions and the mannequins were papier-mâché'd with money.  As far as the food theme, hell, Kurt Vonnegut gave us eating as blue-movie porn in one of his books before most of us were even born.
