Ok, time for the most pictures I've ever posted at once! My girlfriend and I recently traveled to Tanzania and climbed Kilimanjaro! Actually, Daria was already out there for 5 weeks to run a program for Engineering World Health, and then I spent 2 weeks with her. We reached the highest point of Kilimanjaro (Uhuru Peak), at 5895 meters (19341 feet). I've done a lot at high altitude, having run above 4000 meters, but this was a whole different ball game. What an incredible and humbling experience! I'm not sure if it was harder than running 100 miles in a day, but it was definitely at least one of the hardest things I've ever done. I wore my jeans every step of the way (although I had snow pants on top of them on the way to the final summit).

Pre-climbing:

Dancing at a night club in Moshi:

Hung out with some locals:

Day 4:

Summit day.  We reached the peak literally minutes before sunrise, which yielded some of the best photos I've ever taken.  These were all on my cell phone (as with all of the photos above, except the safari ones), so it was even more incredible in real life:

Took the snow pants off on the way back down.  These 2 are from Stella Point, with Uhuru just over my shoulder.  Jeans are more dirty than they've ever been:

Amazing stuff Cander. The sunrise at Kilimanjaro must have been incredible.

Thanks everyone! Yeah, it was such a unique and incredible experience... I would highly recommend the climb to anyone outdoorsy. It was much harder than I anticipated, but that just made it more rewarding. If anyone is thinking about going and needs info on guides, send me a PM and I'll happily recommend the crew that helped us up. Behind the scenes was a group of 11 people helping us every step of the way. We had a lead guide, assistant guide, cook, food server, and 7 other porters (carried tents, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, even a portable toilet!). By the way, that toilet was possibly the single most important piece of gear we had... If you climb it, don't go with a group that doesn't bring a toilet. The squatty outhouses along the way were super busy and not maintained. Let's just say that you're going to get some $hit on your boots if you don't have a portable toilet.10406980_10100594587648435_6204655843028

In any case, the crew members were all really genuinely nice people, and thanks to doing it through a smaller less-known company that we heard about through word-of-mouth, we got a tight-knit group of guys that all knew each other and worked together well. Big shout-outs go to Emmanuel (the guy without a hat) and Joshua (on the right with the green baseball cap), our guides, and God (awesome shortened name for Godfred, next to me with the similar hat), the food server/porter that taught us some funny slang in swahili and kept our spirits up when we were feeling the altitude.
