New Danner boots to go with my jeans (and also to climb Kilimanjaro in a month): 10434314_10100566293814505_5689804267948

(blood stains on my jeans need to get washed out... haha...)

I saved a lot of money by taking a gamble on a very lightly used (worn for under 10 hours before being replaced with a different size) but pretty scuffed up pair, and my Kelly's Dubbin did the trick.  Scuffs are no longer visible and they look like new.

I've got a really cool entry for the latest challenge that I'll be posting soon...

Entry for the latest challenge... My girlfriend and I are working on a couple furniture projects.  First is the chair...  We're recrafting a super beat up old chair with heavyweight Belgian linen (13 oz), new maple legs, all new padding, batting, tufting buttons, etc.  My girlfriend is doing the sewing/tufting/fabric stuff with some minor help from me, and then I'll be helping with the removal of the old legs, the staining of the new ones, and the attachment of them.  We're staining a nice subtle grey, but enhancing the grain with a unique chalk paint.  Still left on this is the tufting of 5 more buttons, piping for the sides, the seat part, and then the legs.  She's put probably 40 hours into just the tufting so far (fabricating the buttons was really slow, and placing everything by hand is a monster task), after putting in another 20 hours stripping the chair of the old beat up fabric, batting, padding, etc, figuring out the legs, sourcing the ideal padding, etc.  By the time this is done, I expect more than 100 hours of our time to go into it, but it's turning out great.  We had no idea how incredibly time intensive it is to completely recraft a chair, with tufting, by hand.

The fabric laid over the bottom won't be like that... it's just extra fabric hanging out for the time being.  I seem to have misplaced the legs right now, so I don't have photos handy.  Also, note that the side creases obviously aren't set yet.  The fabric will cover that ugly stained wood on the front, so we won't have to look at that.

Now, the project that I'm more involved in...  We managed to find a really beat up old Ethan Allen desk for $20.  The owner had no idea that Ethan Allen furniture costs quite a bit and had been planning on refurbing it, but eventually just decided to get it out of her house.  When we got it, it looked like this:

14527536069_20a8e50f83_b.jpg

Even in similarly super beat up condition, these vintage desks are still worth a lot of money, so we happily took this project on, knowing that the desk was a steal.

The goal is to sand it down super well, and then restain with the same subtle grey color, before enhancing the grain with the same chalk paint.  The sanding is pretty easy on the flat spots, as we have a random orbit sander, but the fine details are challenging and very time consuming, as they have to be done by hand.  That includes the rounded legs, inner corners, smaller edges, etc.  Here's what's been done so far:

14733984823_68a99bffff_z.jpg

This part was especially annoying to sand:

Oh, and we'll have to get new hardware!

After this, we're going to redo my dining room table, which is a massive table made from some asian hardwood and slate.  I want things to match, so it'll be the same stain and grain enhancement.  That'll be a few months down the road though...  This stuff takes forever...

OK, enough for now!

Summ3rhays - nice hike - where are those mountains?

Summ3rhays is hiking SouthEast of Salt Lake City, UT.  The first photo is obviously lacking in easily determined landmarks, but in the other two, he's in the Mount Olympus Wilderness, which is a fantastic area.  You can see Little and Big Cottonwood Canyons in the back, as well as the little used Bells Canyon.  You can also see the Lone Peak area.  Summ3rhays, correct me if I'm wrong, of course. :)

That does sound like hard work Cander, but I'm sure it pays off with good results.

That's correct.  We hiked Mount Olympus which is in the Wasatch Mountain range.  It's not very long at about 6-7 miles round trip, but it's fairly steep.  You gain about 4,000 ft.

Great update Cander.  Sweet find on the desk and your jeans are epic.

About two weeks ago I went to Berlin with a couple of friends. We went do drink beer, and beers we drank. We brought the Phantom with us as a mascot. He got completely violated, poor thing.

Welcome to the show of 7 degenerates and the Phantom:

A warm up before we went to see Germany-France at Branderburger Tor

There were quite alot of people there. I think we were watching the 3-4 screen and had at least one more behind us.

I don't know if this goes for my challenge entry? Didn't really dress up to cheer for Germany but damn did we want them to win. Couldn't have a gloomy atmosphere in the city while we were there could we now.

The next day we watched Beerfest and had a couple of beers before breakfast.

We got this ugly ass strawhat from some german dude the night before. Also, the apartment didn't have a balcony which meant smoking was done out of these windows that you barely could open up.

Wow I would never think of wearing jeans to a wedding let alone my own wedding. But this guy pulse it off. Super nice contrast with the classic wedding dress. Hehe crazy stuff. Awesome pants, beautiful wife!

Part II:

As promised, here are the pics of my wedding day (is this considered "home-improvement"? :D). I blurred out the faces of some of the guests, since I wasn´t sure whether they would like to be published.

The whole day was a blast – we got married in Castle Wilhelmshöhe, which is one of the main attractions in my hometown of Kassel. Since both my wife and me are agnostic, we decided not to be married in a chapel.

The whole celebration was kept rather small, we only invited close friends and relatives. After the ceremony, our guests surprised us with white doves and a ride in this awesome car, a 50-year-old Morris Minor 1000.

I cannot say much more than that I am so glad that I married this wonderful woman… This truly was the best decision I have made in my life. :)
