1. it takes a nation of millions to hold us back- Public Enemy.
If you dont know why this is #1 you need to just go out and buy it, listen to it, and then imagine you were back in 1988. thats all that needs to be said
2. Criminal Minded- B.D.P.
Once upon a time, it was a new thing to hear James Brown samples. it was new to hear someone saying something in a song. it was new to get your ass handed to you by some kid from the shelter. KRS, Scott LaRock, D-Nice made these things standard. This album made it harder to put out a dope record, you had to be able to compete, and not many can, even still.
3. Low End Theory- A Tribe Called Quest
perfect album. everything is in place here. tribe set out to create a good record, and changed the way that we look at hip hop forever. great listen begining to end, and still sounds fresh 14 years later

Its very heartening to see that supertalkers know real hip-hop.......not hip-pop
I see some amazing albums and I agree with many. So hard to choose
three out of the thousands of great albums.
Honestly though, if someone even mentioned eminem, 50 cent, etc. I would've been pissedimages/icon_smile.gif
Top three Albums for me
1. De la is Dead - De la Soul
I'm a big de la fan
2. Things Fall Apart - The roots
3. 36 chambers - wu tang
I know there are a lot more albums considered "the greats"....but these three
albums were the ones that really sparked my interest in hip hop

--- Original message by 1995chardx on May 20, 2006 01:35 PMIf the only Common album you've heard is Be, you HAVE to listen to his old shit like One Day It'll All Make Sense and/or Resurrection...if you have listened to them, then cool, but if not, do that, you could replace Be with one of those real quick. Be's production is sick thanks to Kanye and J Dilla(RIP)...
but it gets old real fast.

its funny.. I usually agree when its said that hiphop hasn't been as good as it used to be,
but still some of my all time favorite albums are from 2001 onwards. I got mad love for Reasonable
doubt, but I just have to pick blueprint because to me it feels even more complete.
Reflection Eternal is just simply my favorite hiphop album of all time, period. amazing production,
Kweli's precense couldnt be replaced by anyone.. all together the closest to a perfect album ever.
top 2:
Talib Kweli & Hitek: reflection eternal - train of thought
Jay-Z - Blueprint
I just cant pick a 3rd album with these, there are so many good ones but out of various reasons these stand out.
runners up: Illmatic, reasonable doubt, resurrection, Be, Ready To Die, College Dropout (yes I said it..), Like Water for Chocolate, Beats Rhymes and Life, Blackstar..

a lot of the people in rap that you would think would be cool are dicks and a lot you would think would be tough or aloof are actually really cool. england, maybe you've come across this.
i'll just say this, having been around a lot of people in the rap game, a lot of the rappers that claim to be all about being conscious, drug free, or even anti-gay are just running game on cats. just take everything with a grain of salt guys.

i like 50, he's an intelligent dude, more than how he comes across on records. always had respect for him even before he was "famous". his reputation carried a lot of weight in new york way before he got shot up. but to say that Get Rich or Die Tryin' is a classic is kind of a stretch. unless you define a classic by number of units sold--which these days is pretty much the case...

Top 3 would be a bit difficult seeing as how there are 20yrs of amazing music...but here's the three that first popped into mind:
1. Main Source - Breaking Atoms
2. Roots - Illadelph Halflife
3. Nas - Illmatic
This top 3 selection isnt as easy as it seems...

It's interesting to see some of the generational stuff here, you can sort of gauge people's age by their responses. Like if you cite Public Enemy or BDP vs. Wu-Tang or something, I think a lot of that has to do with how old you were when you got really into hip hop. I'm in the latter group, and my top three would be:
1. Wu-Tang Clan: Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
-anybody else notice the edited version of C.R.E.A.M. on the clean album and in the video is way better than the unedited version?
2. Mobb Deep: The Infamous
3. Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die

2. Pharcyde - Bizzare Ride to the Pharcyde
3. Latyrx - First LP (Two face)
Can't deny that East Coast flav!
1. Roots - Illadelph Halflife

1. it takes a nation of millions to hold us back- Public Enemy.
This is hte first time I'm traversing into this side of the SuFu forums...and I immediately see this post...thank you my dude...P.E. all day..."It Takes A Nation" is STILL incredible. Those dudes are INSANE live (saw them at BB Kings recently).
Dammit this is difficult...but off the top of my head...my 3 favortes that have got recent spin...in no particular order:
1. Raekwon (& Ghostface) - "Only Build 4 Cuban Linx" (stays in my CD changer...there's no day when this album cannot be put on)
2. Public Enemy - "It Takes A Nation..."
3. Smif n Wessun - "Dah Shinin" (along with Black Moon's "Enta Da Stage")
I definitely have to disagree with the Common thing...he WAS on some gay shit when he was fuckin' Erykah...ironically, the moment he started workin' with Kanye, he got back his 21st century Resurrection shit. "Be" was one of my favorite albums that year...imo it just sounded like a complete album start to finish. He's always been nice lyrically, just the beats he chose to put on his albums post-Resurrection/pre-Be (started with about 1/4 of "One Day It'll All Make Sense") were kinda soft and left-fieldish.
...but then again, what do I know, I think Styles-P is what conscious music should sound like (the closest thing to Chuck D...well at least in getting a message across with an edge and no compromise).
heBAY
05-22-2007, 02:39 PM
Also...seriously...how hard is it for anyone to list just ONE Wu Tang album in a thread like this. Jeez.
Also, some members have been posting mixtapes as favorites...therefore:
1. Styles-P - "Ghost In The Machine/Ghost In The SHell/Ghost Stories" (just can't choose)
2. Beanie Sigel - "Public Enemy Number 1"
3. Peedi Crakk - "P. Crakk For President"
Honorable mention goes to the Re Up Gang mixtapes...I would add those if there were more slots.

How come people are so into the Aquemini album from Outkast? If anything, his first album Southernplayalisticcadillacmuzik was the shit.
that common hate is played. one day itll all make sense and like water for chocolate shit on resurection. no IDs beats cannot touch ?uest and dilla. ever. people hate on those albums because common was reaching back into a very forgotten mood that soul music used to provide. he was on some last poets, gil scott heron shit and it was the best music he ever made. better than i used to love HER and better than anything on BE. Kanye runs the soul sample these days and it just sounds like appropriation now that dilla and ?uest flipped it perfectly.
if your gonna hate on common hate on Electric circus. that was god awful. but the two albums before it were amazing. anything with d'angelo is bomb. if its not hard enough for you, thats when ya lost. that shit is smooth as fuck.

I don't think anything has ever touched what Wu had with their first couple albums - talking specifically about 36 Chambers, Liquid Swords & Cuban Linx.
Those aren't necessarily top three ever, of course, but taken together I'd give em a top slot...
Then Illmatic.
Then possibly Ready to Die, but if we're going off favorites rather than best... I'd lean to Let's Get Free or Doomsday or College Dropout.

How can your list be so absolutely random from one day to the next. Hahah. I see no connection there besides the obvious Run/Beasties.
I don't see anything random about it a list of my own personal favorites. Why does there have to be an obvious correlation between the 3 albums? I guess it's cause I've lived through the many different eras of Hip Hop (and music in general)...so why not grab what appeals to me from the various time periods? I'm not 35 yet, but I'm definitely not 18.
Those are definitely all favorites of mine. You don't question someone who lists his/her favorite Rock albums as Sgt. Pepper's...(The Beatles), Masters Of Reality (Black Sabbath), and Rock For Light (Bad Brains)...at least I hope not.
heBAY
03-06-2008, 04:31 PM
Wait I just gave it a thought and looked back at my list...how do you NOT see a connection!?!?!?! Hahahahaha.
Earlier Def Jam catalog...Run DMC, Beasties, PE (the latter two albums having heavy sample usage which I love).
Early-Beginning of Mid-90's...Black Moon, Raekwon (any early Wu or the first Smif n Wessun for that matter...it was a hard choice...but I've got too many memories associated with the EDS and the Purple Tape).
DOC's first, I guess can seem a little out of place...but it is my favorite West Coast album of all time (methinks)...closely followed by the 2nd and 3rd NWA joints (Straight Outta...and Niggaz4Life)...as well as Cube's early shit and of course early 'Row Snoop and Dre.
ktothe
03-06-2008, 04:47 PM
I didnt find anything WRONG with your list, I just didnt see the correlation aside from the obvious standouts of their respective eras. But I guess when you look at in the context of sample usage it makes sense.
Rock (rap?) on.
I dont think I answered either:
Can O (handle you slow) The Cold Vein
That Nigga The Blueprint
PUTS - The Next step
These are the three albums I never stop listening to. Definitive top 3? I cant call it, theres too much quality material.
