if theyre as good as they were in brooklyn a few weeks ago, you're
in for a crazy show.

i dont know man...i saw them in LA and it was boring as hell. the show was your standard walk up to the mic, play through songs without moving, then leave as quickly as possible. this was also in front of the dim mak dudes who are putting out their singles (so i figured more enthusiasm would've been warranted)......plus its LA....

Hmm will see how its goes.. klaxons and modular have a pretty big set of followers down here so it might be better... however perhaps i should wait for the guest line up to be announced before i gets tix..

onemancult

plus its LA? LA is a horrible hell hole of a place that should never be graced with musical performances of any kind that dont involve shitty hair metal cover bands.
saying "plus its LA" is like saying "but of course whatever i was just talking about fucking sucked, it is from/happened in/is somehow related to Los Angeles"

anyway, the klaxons at studio b were phenomenal. i haven't been to a show that great in a while, and i'm a music junkie who's seen a ton of bands. further than that, it was the first time i saw full-on moshing and crowdsurfing outside of a hardcore or metal show, and the fact that it was to the klaxons was hilariously satisfying. the band was really on, really friendly, screwed around with some arrangements, and overall put on a good performance, plus the crowd was super receptive... there was definitely some good energy making shit go right. hope it works out that way in Aus. too!

i didn't mean to come across quite so serious, i meant it more as a typical east coast vs. west coast sort of jibe that has little to do with reality. i should start using the patented Sarcasm-o-meter...

Daft what??? Already have my ticket to see them. Where you trying to imply a lot of this "electro" (nth incarnation of the word electro) music owe a lot to Daft Punk and other french house acts? It's quite simple really, don't mislead him. If it was an accident on your part, keagan, then shame on you! But then again, I know you know too much, so be a little bit friendlier.

Hooj = Huge
Choons = Tunes

It's the same as saying "big tune." Hooj Choons was also the name of a record label in the '90s that had Solar Stone and Energy 52. They released big Ibiza songs ("Cafe del Mar" and "Seven Cities"), thus making those hooj choons.

Anyone else feeling the Stronger sample off Kanye's new mixtape? It sounds like a rough draft to me, but I like where it's going. He's never been more than an okay rapper in my opinion, so songs with really bombastic backing seem to work better for him, and right now his vocals are just mixed right at the front and it doesn't really make sense to me.

The Stronger snippet off Kanye's new mixtape sounds great, but the entire song rip from Mark Ronson's radio show isn't as impressive. That might be due to his annoying voiceovers overs overs, though.

The MSTRKRFT dance remix is great though. Too bad the only rips of the entire song I've been able to find is either a radio rip with voiceovers at start or end, or a complete rip that's only in 96kbps.

The only Le Tigre track I can even find on my computer is an LCD Soundsystem remix which isn't terrible once the vocals kill themselves. It certainly isn't all that good, for that matter, either.

jmatsu
06-12-07, 07:13 AM
my opinion of le tigre is that their popularity is based more upon their image rather then musical ability. bikini kill lineage and feminazi dyke propoganda that is.
let's face it, while lcd's remix of deceptacon was pretty good light years ago, it can't really compare the onslaught of newer production that has emerged. it just hasn't aged gracefully. i certainly hate it when a dj gets the notion to throw some le tigre into their set.

dangerous muse? seriously they are mtv material. they have like 1 semi listenable song. like clothing/brands people often randomly namedrop certain dj's or bands (to sound knowledgable or hip to a certain scene's standard) that have certain connotations to people who just "know." omc know's!
most people in the "know" come off like elitists/assholes, but too me this is totally natural. they (i feel the same as well) don't want something that they hold sacred to turn into a laughable/trivial commodity.

on another note:

i just got the new blackstrobe album "burn your own chuch."
it seems pretty good, but i don't understand what part ivan smagghe played in it's production, because he's not even listed as a band member. he get's some credit for lyrics. what's the 411. ivan smagghe IS blackstrobe. can someone elaborate on this? is the album insert accurate or vague? c'mon omc...

everyone please get on the same page:

Electro, short for electro funk (also known as robot hip hop and Electro hop) is an electronic style of hip hop directly influenced by Kraftwerk and funk records (unlike earlier rap records which were closer to disco). Records in the genre typically have electronic sounds and some vocals are delivered in a deadpan, mechanical manner often through a vocoder or other electronic distortion.

this is the earliest incarnation of a genre known as 'electro', coming about in america during the mid to late 80s.

the late 90s Electroclash scene owed much to 80s electro, along with bringing in new wave, punk, etc.

what people are calling electro these days is really short for electro house- four to the floor beats from house music with harmonic basslines swiped mostly from electroclash and higher pitched lead synth sounds coming over from the french house scene. a lot of the current electro house that is popular owes a great deal to a small resurgence in popularity of acid house during the late 90s/early 00's in europe- that's where the now-trademark distorted synths and generally rougher sound is really coming from.

everyone please get on the same page:

...

And again, like Westside mentioned a page or two ago, you can see the crossover with hip-hop where electro first started, almost entirely in New York and mostly in the Bronx with artists like Afrika Bambaataa, Mantronix. Gotta give credit to some Detroit acts, though, Cybotron (Juan Atkins) et all, Kevin Saunderson and Mayday.

I was really into this shit for a while, a good friend of mine introduced me to the music. Fuck, he introudced me to most everything decent in music. I don't see him too much anymore, which is a perpetual bummer.

I remember seeing M.I.A. open for LCD Soundsystem probably... I'd say four or five years ago? Probably four. Visuals were this exact sort of thing, I was too far away from the stage at that point to be able to say whether or not she was wearing Cassette Playa, but it's unusual seeing in retrospect just how on point she was.

I don't think she was completely sober, however, because it was not a very good show. I don't remember if Diplo was backing that night or what, but that was good, but man, she couldn't stay on beat to save her life.

Are there any fans of the more chilled out House music (non electro?) here, that could recommend something more traditional or pure house? Artists like Roy Davis Jr, Danny Tenaglia or Miguel Migs that I could check out? I liked the Maison (Dragonelle) and Justin Long recommendations. All this Dan Le Sac and Justice stuff has me feeling a little French Fried. (Put away your knives, and go easy on this Gen Xer.
