Good call.
I got annoyed with the sticker decals on the wheels, so yesterday at work I decided to start peeling them off. I leave one on, on my front wheel.
Talk about a waste of time.

a pretty bike friendly city in spite of few bike lanes, one of the highest theft rates in north america, no tax incentives or subsidies for bike commuters, homicidally oblivious cars, and breakable bike posts (http://www.torontoist.com/archives/2006/08/toronto_bike_po.php).

wow, you two have such nice bikes. how do you not get your stuff stolen? i take my junker to school and the city, and there are many an empty bike rack with u-lock and tire...somewhere an angel is crying.
personally, i prefer multigear simply because there's more shit to put together for rebuild and i've been driving manual everything most of my life...i can't turn back. that aside, props for learning the fixed gear ways. i'll try to post pics of my world sport tomorrow.

Crazy world for bikers.
Do they consider bikes a motorized vehicle?
Not sure how laws are about bikes, but over here... Its considered a motorized vehicle, which pisses me off.
You lose all pedestrian rights and such when youre on a bike.

1. big scary kryptonite locks
2. i always likened fixed gear to driving manual. i find especially in bad weather with a freewheel i'm sliding around too much to feel in control.
technically, bikes are treated the same as cars under the law, but on monday i also blew past a red light and four bicycle cops who saw it and did shit-all. even the cops in this city don't know the laws on cycling, which is probably why we are all terrorized on the roads, because nobody's enforcing bike rights either.

it's technically nice to be considered on the level as motor vehicles. it's sad that motor vehicle drivers, for the most part, don't know that or ignore it. in SF at least, no one is too picky about bikes using the crosswalk sometimes; some intersections are too risky.
stunt - are you in training for track cycling with that bike; it looks awesomely serious.
canice - that's a potent article...it only took wood and some prying.

Only the new Kryptonite locks. None of the older bic pen key joints.
I like fixed gears better in the rain. I rode my dads old composite on a random rainy day, and I had to tap my brakes way too many times.
I dislike how bikes are now treated as a car would be. Esp. with getting a stupid ticket for doing a small u-turn infront of my house, in the opposite lane going the opposite direction. Stupid.
We're considered motorized vehicles, yet, dont have the same privledges as cars.
I WANNA RIDE ON THE FREEWAY DAMNIT!
Just one single day... No cars at all on the freeway... Oh man... I wouldnt kno where to begin.

Not training for a race. Just my bike. I love her.
Rides really well, esp with the new wheel, shortened the height of my fork, so my stem sits lower, and raised the seat up a bit.
Since this is our own thread, wats everyones views on cages/toe straps?
I personally dont see myself riding with them. Ive been asking many bikers and bike shop workers about em.
All were + about straps/cages.
I know theres a few tricks I wont be able to do without em.
Theres always that thought in my mind, that if I get hit or fall, Im going down with my bike.
For instance... Last nite.
The way I got hit and where my bike went compared to my body, it would have been worse for me. My buddy told me, that when he went down on his bike, his feet came right out. Then my boss told me, when he used to ride, he went down with his bike, cuz his feet got stuck.
Anyways.
So luckily I just flew infront of the car, rather than where my bike went.
[bike]
(curb) [car]
[me]
These types of scenarios, give me second thoughts about riding with cages.
Im willing to try them out, but so far with all of my non-car crashing experiences, Ive been doing fine.
People are suprised that Im able to skid without cages and come to stops.
I havent been able to ride around SF yet, just around Valencia and Mission.
Personally I find it much easier to stop/skid with cages/clipless. I think that it's reckless of you to ride without. It's not only for your benifit but for those around you.

Care to elaborate?
Ive been able to come to stops and control my bike pretty damn well, without cages.
Of course, not AS well as most, but pretty damn well.
Theres been times where using my "sole brakes" have come in handy. And that split second it takes to get yer foot out of the cage/straps, might have made the difference.
I dont ride or try to ride reckless, for the most part anyways.

stunt your bike looks really nice because it's so simple. idk where to start about bikes i don't think i'm ready to jump into your and canice's world. your crash gets you a pinch on the arm, sucka
After a reread my post does come across as a bit harsh; I really am not trying to be an ass. It's my personal experience that I am better able to control my bike with cages.

I wouldn't fancy riding cages either but I like to ride plastic pedals even less 9especially in the wet). If it were my bike the next thing I'd be purchasing would be some nice new pedals.
On the other hand I don't ride fixed, or indeed, a road bike so what do I know...
Ryan
If you're looking for a cruiser you could try Wethepeople as they've just come out with a new one (complete with old school dropouts).
If you're made of money and you can track one down then you might consider the Shadow Conspiracy/Invisible Man collaboration of course..
It's not technically a cruiser but Volume brought out a 26" bmx-type-thing called The Sledgehammer (yes, it was named after Pedro's bike in Napolean Dynamite).
That's just a few off the top of my head, though personally I don't know whay you'd want to buy a cruiser in the first place (I don't mean any offence by that).

Yeah I love mountain biking.
I have an Orange 7+, its a freeride/downhill bike, I use it for everything offroad.
I have a GT hardtail that I built up with hope discs, marzocchi's, azonic steering stuff, although now it has slicks on it.
I also have an "eastern bikes" bmx, that I bought for commuting, and did a couple of grinds on it but its fukd my back up so the commuting is done on the gt now.

Any suggestions????

get a mountain bike frame, have roadie cogs and gears, carbon stuff like handle bars if you can afford it and some nice light wheels inside slick tyres, dont use a bmx for long distances.

how much would i have to spend for a new bike similar to that?
do you buy the components and assemble them yourself, or...?

Dope bike.
How much did it run you?
As far as tips...
How comfortable are you with your bike?
I waited around a week or two to get REAL comfortable with my bike, before I attempted skidding.
Anyways.
Skidding:
Im right legged, so I have my right leg putting pressure against the peddle.
But first, I tried to get myself used to the motions. So Id practice going from my seat, to getting into position, without rolling. Then Id practice wen rolling. Kinda like learning how to ollie on a skateboard.
Trackstands:
Ive yet to actually be able to do a trackstand for a while. (I was able to track stand at a light last nite till the green, YES. But as soon as I got back on my seat, my left foot came off the peddle. Bastard leg)
As with skidding, I have my right leg behind, cuz it has better control than my left leg.
Right leg back, left leg forward, then turn your wheel to whichever side is infront.
Or you can have someone hold onto your seat, and have you stand. That way, you get used to the feel of trackstanding.
Skidding is fun, but sure as hell fucks up the tires fast.
canice
11-16-2006, 08:07 PM
skidding:
feet at 3 and 9 o'clock, back pressure on the rear leg and pull up on the clips with your front. balls/stomach to the stem and lean forward. doing it on wet ground/marble/granite helps tremendously.
trackstands:
different ways to do this, i put my legs at 3 and 9 o'clock, rolling back and forth til i come to a stop. turn the wheel in the direction of my dominant/front foot (though an equal number of people turn the wheel to the rear foot's side).
practice=perfect.
next, backward circles!
For those wondering about the Pista + brakes. Heres mine with front brakes.
I'm just waiting to invest in new pedals and a new saddle.

as far as trackstanding goes:
find out which leg forward you.re more comfortable with. For instance, I.m a righty and I prefer to skid with my right forward, which in turn makes my trackstands easier with my right leg forward. If you have time and the space inside your home, just practice. Try out both sides, you might find that you prefer to skid/skip stop with your right forward, but have an easier time trackstanding vice-versa. Usually, trackstanding just comes naturally from riding plenty and getting comfortable....but you must practice!
btw: thanks for the props sam:D

What kind of black bullhorns did you get? I was looking for some, but they only had MASSIVE sized bullhorns. So I settled with Nittos and got some bar tape.

Skipped school today and went for a ride through golden gate park. Praticed skidding around as the ground was really wet, its all about weight transfer, no? After that went and had some beers in the botanical gardens. One of my friends was on a mountain bike and he kept hitting up all the little trails just to fuck with the two of us as we were both on fixies. Just thought Id share, havent posted in this thread in a while. Ahh, also I think I'll be needing new tires soon. What are you guys running? Anyone got any rec's.

I havent hit any major hills. Just a few bridges over near me.
Whenever I AM in SF, the streets are too congested to even want to jam down a hill.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h35/stuntastic13/DSC00217.jpg
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h35/stuntastic13/DSC00214.jpg
Brief rundown... No pun intended...
I was riding on Tuesday night, after I got a burrito. Riding near the side of the lane, close to the curb. It was on the main street. Had my lil blinky light hanging from my u-lock in my backpocket. Bunch of cars drive by. I slow down, to enjoy a nice slow stroll home. BAM!
Hit straight on from behind, by a old Dodge Dakota, driven by an old senile man...
I fly over my handle bars, out of my cages, and onto the street. I get up and yell at him blah blah blah.
He pretty much told me I deserved to get hit, since I didnt have a light, which I did.
Called my dad, he came. Called the cops, they came later. During the wait, the old guy kept complaining about him needing to go home for dinner, since he had dinner in the car. Kept making threats to me.
Filed a police report, hopefully this guy either gets his license taken away, or at least retested for it.
His skid mark, started AFTER mine. He hit his brakes after he hit me, and slightly went towards the left, into the lane where he SHOULDVE been. If he hadnt slightly went towards the left, he wouldve ran right over me.
Anyways.
Luckily came out with only road rash on my wrists, left elbow, right hip, and right calf. My left shoulder hurts, right elbow hurts, right wrist hurts, and my back is real sore.
Bastard.
Went to the bike shop last night, and my bike is done for.
Headed to another bike shop, and reserved a PAKE for myself. A Christmas present for myself I guess... But damn, I loved my bike...
Ride safe everyone.
And no, this one wasnt my fault. Suprisingly.

Damn man, glad you're ok. Yeah I live in Daly City, but if I go out/go riding its usually in the city, but I haven't really hit up any real hills as of yet. Hmmm, San Mateo doesn't seem like the most interesting place to ride, but it is flat. Anyway, man good luck with getting your new ride up and running (I assume you'll just be transferring your old stuff to the Pake?). I haven't been riding much what with the holidays, etc., but yeah I'd be down to ride after X-mass/New years if we get some decent weather.
Take care man.

stuntastic
12-21-2006, 10:39 PM
San Mateo is alright to ride. If you like riding around the streets with cars, its alright. But for the most part, its just flat and straight (El Camino.)
The only things I can transfer over from my Bianchi to the soon to be Pake are:
- Stem
- Crankset
- Seat/seat post
And I just got my bullhorns too. They got slightly scratched, but bike shops suggested I get new bars, since they could break.
Gonna paint it some funky color, maybe. Or just white.
Planning on getting a cold Deep V for the back.
This sucks.
Holy hell, tough break man.
I regularly check this thread out and immediately went to the last page where you mentioned you were getting a Pake... I was thinkin' what?!? Bianchi for a Pake?!
Not to knock on Pake, but what went through my mind was that the Bianchi is a killer deal for the components you get!
Then I saw the smash up...
That's rough man. I hope your Pake works out well for you!
By the way, a lot of people complained about the weight on the Aerospoke, did you find the weight difference extremely notable?
stuntastic
12-22-2006, 01:06 AM
Did people complain about the weight being too heavy or too light? For me, its REALLY light. The Aerospoke + Nitto Bullhorns made my Bianchi feel SOO much lighter. The only thing that was bad about the Aerospoke, is that it catches wind mad easily. But all youve gotta do is ride faster ;)
Still pretty bummed about my Bianchi. First bike, had the cool paint job, nice and clean flat black look to it... Taken away within a month of having it like that... Fucking awesome...
Prolly gonna paint the Pake white. Gold DeepV in the back, black Aerospoke in the front, same cranks and seat, maybe a shorter stem, and thinking about getting drop outs or riser bars... I still really like bull horns, so Im not sure... Gotta figure it out...
LUCKILY my aerospoke only had a couple of scratches from this accident. If it had broken, I prolly wouldnt be riding for a month or two...
Im also gonna keep my stock Bianchi flip flop hub for my DeepV. It works really well, and havent had problems with it. I guess my Izumi chain will be put on sooner than Id like...

Alright, so not to throw this off topic too much (although still bike related), what do you bike gurus think about the Biomega Bike from Puma?
http://www.travelizmo.com/archives/Puma-BIOMEGA-BIKE.JPG
Next year I am going to be moving to NY or SF and I'm ditching my car and mostly going to be riding a bike (especially if I move to Frisco). I'm not too concerned with the technical things such as brakes, etc as long as it stops when I need it to! Also, the folding mechanism is something I will need as well.
Is there anything that is considered 'better' for the price with the same features? I was looking at slingshot bikes but I don't really want to spend $1250.
Thanks everyone!
Yeah, I've heard some people mentioning the weight on the rim -- I'm not the type who likes to gram out a bike, so I was just wondering if the weight was really that SIGNIFICANTLY different. But I guess not!
That's a real bummer man, clean lookin' bike.
I plan to pick up some bullhorns or some riserbars soon. No shitting on the Deda drops but those things can turn my wrists to jelly when im not in the drop, but I just really dig the way they look!
Stock flipflop on the '06ers? That's really cool. Gotta run a crap lever in order to stop the damn bike unless your that crazy! Haha.
Did the toe clips work out for ya afterall? I can't find any metal toe clips locally. Kind of a hassle!
Good luck with the Pake, I've always loved white bikes and contrasting components.
stuntastic
12-22-2006, 03:29 AM
Toe clips were growing on me... Definately like riding fast with them. But when it comes to skidding, I can go either way. Still like it slightly better with toe clips. If you need, I can search stores locally for watever clips youre looking for. They have a ton. Except for black metal toe clips. I think Im just going to re-wrap my Nitto bullhorns, and buy some drop outs (maybe) just in case. Not sure. Feels like a waste, the stock Pista drop outs, Nitto Bullhorns, then having to get another one.
GAH THE MONEY!!!

Hey,
Sorry, don't know too much about folding bikes, but I do know Schwinn makes one and is bound to be cheaper than the Puma bike. The Puma does look cooler but I'm not sure what components come on the Puma. Then again, if its more of a commuting bicycle and your not too into the knitty gritty of things it probably won't matter to you. The folding aspect of bikes is cool, though.
However, like I said, I don't know how much of that Biomega bike price is because of the brand Puma or if it's equipped with some nice parts.
You could find yourself a regular "department" store bicycle for a lot cheaper.
Or you could buy a used road bike or singlespeed.
But then you lose the folding feature.
I don't think disc brakes are necessary on a bike in the city. Regular brake calipers will do just fine. Just keep that in mind if you choose not to go with the biomega.
Good luck!

what the bloodclot, again?! you have terrible luck with cars. do you live in the burbs or something? sorry to hear about your bike. on the plus side, you're okay, bike shopping is fun, and the driver will foot the bill.
deep v + aero combos are about the heaviest wheels you can buy... aerospokes are heavier than deep v's, and deep v's are probably the heaviest popular rim on the market. i'm surprised you say the aerospoke made your bike feel LIGHTER, those stock bianchi rims must be made of stone!
also, i wouldn't re-use the stock hub, even if there aren't any visible cracks in the flanges, i'd worry about it failing on you next time you try to lace it up or ride it.
i was gonna buy a new frame for a winter project (or maybe a road bike), but then i bought a $1600 lens. win some, lose some. here's the bike, taken with the new lens:

I remember seeing that chain ring on that bike!
Anyway's, I hear good things about those IRO's as well, there's a guy from Davis riding a Jamie Roy, white frame with black components, sick lookin thing.
As for I, I'm going to hook up my pista with an ultegra front brake. Just gotta find the right brake lever that I can put on the top of my drops and have it pull enough cable for a road calliper. Gotta preserve my health ya know? Hahaha.

The 4130 is why I am not going to go with the Mark V, I figure for the extra money I can go for the Angus frame and get the Reynolds 631.

HAPPY DAYS.
UCD
The Nitto Pursuit bullhorns? I had those on my bike. The reach wasnt too bad with the Pista stem. Im extremely used to it. Been wanting to get a shorter stem for a while, finally got it. And the ride feels completely different. Aside that its a different bike, of course ;)
Anyways.
First thing I did wen I got up, was call the bike shop locally, and see if they carried bottom brackets for Pistas. They told me they did, got there... No go...
Pissed off, and in desperate need to ride... I bought MORE fuckin parts... Was it worth it? Yes... But my pockets are hurtin...
Got a Shimano bottom bracket, and a black Shimano crank set. The chain ring it came with (53t) was too big. They were able to use mine from my Pista. Looks real clean.
Also got some cheapo Riser bars. Dude wouldnt cut them any shorter, so gonna get them chopped off again later.

I definately am considering it. It looks just plain fun. One thing I`m considering is being late to the party. My friends ride and is it gonna be like I get one and then they all stop because its not `cool` anymore? I`m pretty sure everyone in Japan only rides coz HF does anyway...

i think fixed gear is headed the way of skateboarding (ie: mass popularity and commercial exploitation) but that shouldn't be a deterrent. it's just a mode of transportation, but it's more fun getting there, you know?
personally i hope lots of people in japan stop riding, sell their njs-approved bikes on ebay, so the prices will finally depreciate, and i can purchase a keirin frame.
lol. fixies are a fun and intense ride i must say. no emissions and it makes ya feel good, can't complain about that. perfect for me to get around town and to campus. gears are still cool though, i was riding an old '75-'77 raleigh grand prix, tons of fun, nice and heavy, the only thing's the frame's to big for me...
nice bike stuntastic. hope to hear it how it's ride compares with the pista. how much did the pake + components set you back? i know the pake's sort of a budget frame.
goldengloves, don't know why phil hubs are a bit more expensive but i think you can get some decent shimano hubs or whatever your heart may desire and not have to worry too much about it. bike components can be a whole load of bullshit sometimes... once you get into that dura-ace stuff, you just might be paying for the weight difference (though you may be into that) and not necessarily a quality/performance difference. shimano's got so much to their component lines... sora, tiagra, 105, ultegra, dura ace where does it end? haha. keep us posted on that IRO though!

WTF? if there's anything you should invest in on a bike, it's your hubs.
bearings are small, and may look the same to the naked eye, but the quality makes all the difference in the world. my quando hub feels like the bearings are made mashed together shavings of scrap metal, but i've ridden on miche primatos, campy pista, dura-ace and all sorts of other bikes way better than mine, and you can feel it the second you start pedaling. even turning the cranks by hand, you feel less resistance and smoother rolling.
i've also ridden geared road bikes with a sora/tiagra gruppo vs full ultegra. the main difference is weight, but also response and smoothness, no hesitating your pedals while your rear derailleur shifts.

yeah, agreed. i'm not familiar with phil hubs in particular, but in all practicality theres no reason to be running dura-ace/record hubs which will set you back a ton when you can get quality hubs for a lot less -- unless your lance, serious about racing, or serious about having a bike that has full dura-ace/record.
shit hubs are shit hubs, but i think goldenglove will be golden with some IRO hubs.
maybe ill grab a dura ace chain to say i got dura ace, haha.

Canice-thanks for the input. Same thing is true with skateboarding, better bearings certainly do make up a big difference. I'm sure I'll be set with the IRO hubs, but if I get the itch I might try and go for something like a phil or Surly, that's more or less why I was wondering what the big price difference is. It's almost $200 seperating the two!
I'm also going to be looking into making my own hub. I have all the access to cnc machines, anodizing, and bearings so I'll check up on that sometime next week. I'll have to order a phil or campy to see what makes those tick and then I'll work on the CAD file. :)

i don't mean going all out for a full DA bike for the name's sake. chains and hubs are apples and oranges! there is a greater chance of snapping your chain than snapping a flange off your hub. but a hub is ridden day in/day out, and since it's attached to your rims in a wheelbuild and can be transferred between bikes, you may as well make it last. did i mention that a good hub is smooth like butter?
other considerations like:
- thread quality (so you don't strip the damn thing when you skid/skip, or even putting on a new cog)
- axles (so they don't bend under the torque of wrenching, skidding, back pressure)
- lockrings (same deal)
- locknuts (don't slip under the high torque of a sudden sprint)
- flanges (holds your whole wheel together)
- sealed construction (so shit won't sneak in and erode your hub from the inside out... like salt)
mean you can ride a quando hub for 2 months, and ride a phil wood for 20 years.
the only ones to stay far far away from are no names from taiwan, suzue jr. (tho the higher end suzue pro max are great) and quando. reasonably priced hubs like iro, surly and formula have pretty good reputations.
it's not like riding a bad hub feels like you're putting your life in your wheel's hands, but when you're not wasting energy just to put friction between your bearings in your goddamn quando hub (the way i feel sometimes), you spend more time enjoying the ride and being fast. basically, don't buy a shitty hub. i'm a relative noob to fixed gear riding, and i can already tell my hub sucks.

It was a bitch. Fun... but a bitch...
My CC companies love me now... But, hopefully the money from the guy who hit me, will compensate.
Dunno if I stated in the thread already, but I got the bars chopped off some more. So a total of about 3 inches off each side. If the weather is decent (pleeeeeeeeeease) then I'll be riding tmrw. and get a feel of my bike.
The geometry of the PAKE is soo much different than my Pista. It feels smaller, making me think its gonna be a trip to skid. I tried to skid earlier today, but the bars were out there... Wasnt cool.

Haha, yea, if it's not one thing, it's the other. It's all so addicting that's for sure and I wish I had the patience and funds to build a custom......ahhh, maybe some day.
good points on the hubs.
just from a practical standpoint i always like to point out the way bike components are marketed. after a certain point you merely pay for weight differences instead of quality/performance. a 105 or ultegra brake calliper is going to stop a bike just as well as a dura-ace calliper, yet you pay the price premium because you save 20+/- grams on the dura-ace.
you'll definitely notice differences between hubs and i do agree there are definite quality diferences -- again from a practical standpoint and my own opinion, i would not pay 400+ for a set of hubs to put on a bike i'm running on in the street and not on a track/timetrial/whatever when there are excellent quality/performance hubs at much more reasonable prices. on the same note, you're right! you definitely don't want to skip out on the hubs to the point your struggling on rollin around!
i hope you didn't think the chain statement was a little attack on you. me and my buddy are always joking that we'd throw dura-ace chains on our bikes so we can 'gloat' with all the dura-ace snobs that we're running DA as well, haha. chains are most definitely different than hubs!
stunt, cool set up you got going on there man. interesting to note that PAKE feels smaller than your pista cause the pista's got track geometry. maybe the PAKE is closer to road geometry?
you thinkin of gettin rid of your bullhorns? :D

i'm partial to the aforementioned vanilla bikes for more modern custom framebuilders. but i've somehow gotten the idea in my head that i deserve a proper british track frame, something ornate and classic looking. bob jackson customs, with the columbus tubing and nervex lugs i want, would work out to a fairly affordable $1200.
its becoming increasingly difficult to fight off my want of a single speed 29er. ; ( track/fixed is very fun, dont get me wrong. ive even been thinking of doing alot of thrift shop conversions and tyring to sell them to save up, but well see.

Anyways.
My bike is done. No more parts will be added to this. Hopefully, after all this shit I have to pay off with the next 2 months worth of paychecks, I can have another Bianchi Pista. As posted on FGG.
Today...
So Im riding down El Camino (people in the Bay Area, CA might know,) and theres a bus ahead of me. It made a stop to drop/pick up people. I go around it.
Hes behind me honking, so I slightly move to the far right, enough for him to pass me. As he tries to pass me, he cuts it real close. I almost get grazed by the side of the bus, and he keeps getting closer.
He pretty much ran me off the road, and the far part of the lane I was getting forced into, had a steep grade to it. So I was riding \ sideways. I couldve been clipped by him at this time, and if I fell/slipped, he wouldve ran right over me.
So I ride up to the drivers side at the light, smack his window and ride on a bit, to the front of the light. He gets off this bus, screaming and yelling at me.
I told him that he ran me off the road, and what the fuck was that about. He yells that I swirved, trying to say it was my fault. I guess...
So he then yells and raves about how hes a cyclist, and that I dont know how to ride. "YOU CANT RIDE A BIKE! YOU DONT EVEN HAVE BRAKES ON IT!" blah blah blah, a shit load of yelling and arguing. About five minutes later, he finally gets on the bus. Then yells at me "ARENT YOU GONNA GO INFRONT OF ME! COME ON!" Of course he wouldve tried to hit me/clip me. So I wait till he goes on a bit more, then ride on. Pass him and flip him off.
I called the 1-800, and file a complaint.
I know it wouldve been better if I didnt slap his window, but whatever. I was too pissed off to care at that moment.
Sorry for the long story, but none of my friends ride.

Yea, a lot of people don't seem to comprehend the rules of bicyclists on the road with them. Thank God nothing happened, a bus hit would've been pretty gnarly! And I would say you were right to slap his window, I know a ton of riders who do the same thing when pissed off or almost nearly hit.

01-03-2007, 04:46 AM
Yea. The slap is more of a warning to let whatever driver realize what they did. This guy took it as an attack. He told me that thats a car accident... It wouldve been an accident if I didnt luckily balance myself out.

i agree whole heartedly. i had no idea there was such a huge fixie subculture till i started poking around the internet.
but your right, first and foremost, it's a form of transportation! tons of fun to beat around town or wherever on a bicycle -- fixed, road, whatever!

I agree as well and I also really had no clue of the current fixie trends going on today. I think, just like automobiles, people like to give personalization to whatever they are into. Like I said above, I would love to build my own bike but it's not at all very practical, especially for something that can be so easily stolen but maybe some day, with some disposable income I can make it happen. Either way, I agree about it being a form of transportation, but it is quite fun to turn your every day commute to work into something fun.

Anyways.
Im in love with riding. I dont ride my bike as a fashion accessory, for it to be used as a status symbol, or commuting (even though it IS a plus.) Id rather ride than go out with friends and such.
I never realized how big the fixed gear "scene" was, until I started to work in San Francisco. Theres a lot ofp eople who are getting into it, just because theyve seen i on whatever internet message board or blog. Fact. Ive encountered people like that. Is it gonna stop me from riding? Not at all. Everyone has to start from somewhere.
Im too tired to really make this longer or make some sense. Blew a tube (awesome huh), went out to get a new tube and new wheel liner. Took off my Aerospoke due to high winds being a bitch. Using my dads old Matrix wheel from his old racing bike.
Rode out to Haight, and traded my sz 39 Nitto bars for a 36. Im happy :)

Yea, I figured they were Japanese.
Only seen them on that sighting post on FGG and in Street Jack Mag.
Pure beauty. Hows riding been for you Canice?
The Bay Area is nice and sunny, so Ive been trying to ride as much as I can. But I sucks, cuz I still cant skid or learn any new tricks, because of my elbow. Awesome.

I don`t know why I know but I think they`re Nitto x T19..

Milspex taking looks at fixed gears in Japan?
I thought they were the T-19s. I figured that after I posted, and remember seeing it on some sight.
Anyways.
Got my old Bianchi bars cut like that... It only works with small bars... Looks weird. Hopefully the winds calm down, and I can try them out.

Clean Mercier.
What stem is that?
If I could, Id have blue or red on my bike.
Anyways.
Updated pic of my bike.

Raised the seat up about an inch and a half and put on Nitto bullhorns with Bianchi bar tape.
I can feel the slight weight change without my drop outs. Crazy.
Oh yea... GOT THAT STUPID U-TURN TICKET CLEARED! Idiot cop didnt file it as a BICYCLE ticket (I knew he was gonna do that, because he wanted my ticket to be $$$.) YA FAT BASTARD!
Justice has been served...
stunt, doesn't it hurt riding with the seat that high? O_O
also, in UC Davis, bikers can get DUIs for speeding or whatever. weak, eh?
stuntastic

My seat now is actually A LOT higher, and I still need to raise it haha.
If a cop somehow decides to pull you over, and you have consumed alcohol, you can get a BUI (Biking Under the Influence) and its just as shitty as a DUI.
How fast do you have to go, to get a speeding ticket?
Dumbass cops near me, say "You need to go with the flow of traffic," aka "You need to go at least 45mph."
Then they say just go with the flow of traffic, aka not riding against traffic.
Dumbasses need to make up their minds.

Here's what I ride daily:
http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/9121/dscn41347wt.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
It's a pretty old Peugot and it makes me go fast! I think the colour is quite cool in a goofy way. I need to take proper care of it though since it still has all these old parts and the back tire is basicly falling apart. I just never get around to doing since I need it everyday.
It has way too much stuff going on with gears and brakes and what not, but since it was a gift and it's old(ish) I don't want to fuck with it so I'll leave it like it is.
I'd like to put a more minimalistic bike together one day, but I won't go for a fixie since traffic is too crazy in Amsterdam and I ride way too wreckless/dangerous.
edit: I should've taken the lock off for the pic, but I think you guys get the idea.
not sure really if this is a bike question per se, but I'm trying to get the sticker gunk off of my fat boy in order to start cleaning it and getting ready for a build up. any suggestions for good solutions?

If your decals arent under any clear coat, you can even use a hair dryer.
But Goo Gone and such should work just fine. Dont use too much, cuz you may get through to the paint...

Got my other Nittos chopped yesterday. Fucker fucked up. Cut them too short, and uneven. And wouldnt fix it. Whatever. At least I can skid again.

HAHA...
On those blue drops I can skid. Because theyre smaller, so my legs dont get caught in between the drops.
With the regular drops, I would get caught. My thighs have gotten pretty wide since riding.
Im 6'2...
I'll get into it more in a bit, Im goin out to lunch...

So... I think I covered it... I think...
Pre-Cut Nitto Drops - Bike thighs get stuck between.
T-19s - Smaller, thighs wont get in/stuck.
Cut Nitto Drops - Perfect. Wish they were cut RIGHT, just for the whole aesthetic. But, whatever...
Function > Form.

No BMX riders here?
No BMX riders here?
I ride bmx, just not really well... though part of the reason for that is the fact I live in the back of beyond, in rural Wales. Thus a lack of street spot, skateparks or trails (never ridden trails though).
There's got to be some more bmxers on here though, surely?
(This is in dire need of a bike picture, I know. I shall try to rectify this as soon as possible).

just grab a hacksaw/pipecutter and even them out.
thats funny though
i have oury's up against the stem and Champ grips on the drops, bare shoulders. only ran into problems once. it was a hot summer day, hands were sweaty, skidding down this hill fucking around with some friends, looked to the side BAM
i imagine my hand slipped off, but i have no idea, all i know is my feet didnt come out of the clips which led to hilarity
stuntastic
01-26-2007, 06:58 AM
My foot got stuck in my clips today, which caused me to tip over... Slowly so it was pitiful... Stupid dunk.
Im weird. I can only skid with my hands on the shoulders of the bars. I went practice riding with my riser bars... Couldnt skid for shit. If they werent raised so much, I might be able to.
Oh well... Cut off uglies for now...
canice
01-26-2007, 07:47 AM
that's okay, i once fumbled getting out the clips after a trackstand got messy at a red light at yonge and dundas, the busiest intersection in all of toronto. i heard crowds of bored wigger teenagers across the street collectively going "OHHHHHH!!!!!!!!" as i tipped over. one guy asked me if i was okay.
another time i fell over while still in motion during a critical mass. i started to think too much about remembering to pedal, and it threw me off. i had been riding a fixed for about 3 days at that point.
i still get stuck in my straps all the time. maybe i need some laminated ones that will hold their shape rather than stick to my shoes. and i have a psychological fear of trackstanding clipped in even though i can do it for minutes on end on the flat sides.

How was Critical Mass?
A few people told me to ride it one day, just for the whole experience...
I know for sure Id get annoyed at how slow people ride.
The times I fall are some retarded ass times...
- Getting IN to my cages. But I was trying to do it going uphill, which didnt make sense at all.
-Getting out of my cage today, after a skid. I went left, bike went right.
blah blah blah...
Hopefully theres no rain here for the next couple of weeks. Gotta get as much riding time as I can, before vacation time...
Then its all beer, beach, and beer.

Critical Mass seems to be a joke no matter where you are. it just kinda depends on how big of a joke.
In portland its a police-escorted slowride. gotta stay in a single lane. stopping for every light, tickets always ready to be written
canice
01-26-2007, 05:30 PM
critical mass here still fun, fixed riders are a minority so we know each other. the cops don't really give a shit, and people cheer us on the street. riding at 10kmph drives me nuts (and it sucks trying to stay warm come winter rides), but then someone here came up with the brilliant idea of a "critical vacuum" - fixed/ss only ride that goes super fast around the whole city. and bring your own inebriants.
that haro is the shit. i want to buy a bmx, give it a crazy custom paint job. just to cruise around.
