What's getting you through your days recently?

Right now the Gnarls Barkley CD is on heavy rotation, shit's ill.
Dangermouse is killin' it recently, with DangerDoom, Gnarls Barkley, and rumored to be working with Black Thought of The Roots.

What's on bump for you?
I been rappin' for about 17 years..
I don't write my stuff anymore,
I just kick it from my head you know what I'm sayin I can do that.
No disrespect... but that's how I am.

--- Original message by mike lowrey on Jun 8, 2006 01:30 PMwhat do you think of Lupe Fiasco?
Personally I don't think he's as fresh as everyone is making him out to be.
The skate/hip hop point has been pushed by Pharell already, but I do think he's better than a lot out there, mainstream-wise.

I'm really feelin Gnarls Barkley
and the single "Crazy" is fresh to death.

I've also had The Jazz Liberatorz on repeat today.
Here's an .mp3 for their song "It Was Only A Song"
I'd liken it to RJD2's "Ghost Writer"

Gnarls Barkley's hyyyyped.
Crazy is a good song, the album's boring.

I've been steady bumping to Baltimore Club Crack and B-more Gutter Music mixes,
DJ Semtex presents Crunk and Grime volume 1, CX Kidtronik's Krak Attack, AFI's
Decemberunderground, Behemoth's Demigod, Autonervous' self-titled, and I'm
currently listening to Joy Division.

The latest Sonic Youth put me to sleep.

I've been listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers new album a lot recently.
I like it a lot. I'm not a fan so much of their fast stuff, but I think their slow songs are beautiful.
Such as Soul to Squeeze, it's a great, great song.
So I really like this album, because it's got a lot of really good slow songs.
Standout tracks so far: Snow ((Hey Oh)), Hard To Concentrate & 21st Century

I don't write my stuff anymore,

Television is one of those bands I sincerely believe that people only pretend to listen to because some people long ago decided they were all those things good bands are alleged to be, 'seminal', 'ground-breaking', etc... I think Television are fucking boring.

And jesus fuck a pony, what's with all the Libertines love? Are you on NME's payroll?

Today, so far:

Scum - Gospels for the Sick
The Berzerker - Dissimulate
TV On the Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain
RazorxProductions - Killing Sound
Spank Rock - Yoyoyoyoyoyo

I kind of think a lot of people in this thread have really mediocre taste- like those kids who are into 'alternative' music and think themselves great for resisting the great mammoth record industry, but are only listening to whatever Spin magazine and Pitchforkmedia rate well. Anyone else get this feeling. Anyone? Anyone? I can't be alone; a bunch of few have listed certifiably awesome music.

Some elitist scumbag music junkie back me up here.

ruach

> Some elitist scumbag music junkie back me up here.

I find it ridiculous that you would consider Television boring than go on to list your "soundtrack of the day" which is full of a bunch of completely uninteresting bands. Scum is just horrible gimmick; a gathering of a bunch of big names to play the same trite sounds that they've been producing for twenty years. Berzerker seems to have never changed their sound and continues with the same boring grindcore. TV On the Radio tends to be interchangeable with every other boring indie rock band today.

Just let people love their music. I actually think Marquee Moon is a ridiculously exciting album and I happen to like the Libertines quite a lot.

and to actually contribute to the thread, today has been:
Okay - Low Road
Kaoru Abe - Unfinished Partitas
Steve Lacy & Joelle Leandre - One More Time

--- Original message by onemancult on Jun 12, 2006 03:24 PMI tend to agree. Televion's pretty boring.

Today has been:

Hoover - Lurid Traversal of Route 7
Ink & Dagger - Ink & Dagger
Moss Icon - Lyburnum
Neurosis - Souls at Zero

Scum is a horrible gimmick, but I can't find that out unless I listen to their music.

Berzerker never have changed their sound, but they basically redeemed themselves
as a band for all history with their cover of Carcass' "Corporal Jigsore Quandary",
which features the fastest bpm double-kick drum beat in the history of music. Sure,
they're triggered drums, but it still counts.

I must, however, disagree with you on TVOTR. Name another band that sounds exactly like them, honestly. I think it's pretty much impossible. And sure, that fact may owe a lot to the vocals, but that's crucial. I wouldn't swap out TVOTR for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah or whatever other band from Brooklyn (ugh.) is currently making hipsters bust nuts.

People can love their music, for sure, but I expected more people like you to populate this board. You think Marquee Moon is exciting, you like the Libertines, but, you've also been listening to Fred Frith and Steve Lacy, two favorites of mine. There just seems to be a certain normalization of peoples' tastes on the board that I didn't expect.

Currently listening to:

1919 - Complete

Excellent and little-known post-punk/1st-wave goth band with a starker
rhythm section than all the bands name-checked by current indie darlings.

well, I guess if we're going to try to out-elite people and act like other people have pedestrian taste, I've recently listened to:

Arvo Pärt - De Profundis
Asa-Chang & Junray - Tsu Gi Ne Pu
a million Atom Heart albums
Coil - The Remote Viewer
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Martijn de Kleer - So Close Yet So Far Out
Pan Sonic - Aaltopiiri
Pete Namlook & Burhan Õçal - Sultan
Soma - The Inner Cinema
Speedy J - A Shocking Hobby

... and so on and so forth ...

anyway, I got tired of acting holier than thou because of diverse music taste a while ago. I'm willing to bet pretty much everyone posting in this thread honestly enjoys the music they're listening to, and that's what matters.

lately it's been a lot of cover songs. it puts me in a summer mood to hear some old classics re-invented.

uncle tupelo - gimme gimme gimme (BF)
my morning jacket - suspicious minds (elvis)
lucero - kiss the bottle (jawbreaker)

and, my official summer fun-times rock'n'roll jam, hands-down no-contest

ramones - have you ever seen the rain (good ol' CCR)

i don't see anything about artistry there. certainly accessibility, but i don't find that to be necessarily a good or bad thing. what i don't understand is people using expressions like "best ____ ever" to describe something as subjective as art.
